LOUISA

I follow Travis down the corridor even as my stomach is churning with anxiety and ny heart is racing faster with every step.

I am seriously trying to hold it together, but the desperation to see my children makes it feel like my chest might burst. What if they are hurt? What if he lied to me? I don’t trust him, not for a second.

“Are you sure they are okay?” I snap, breaking the tense silence between us.

“Yes, Louisa,” Travis says without turning to look at me and his calmness grates on my nerves.

“Don’t just say that to pacify me,” I growl, my voice rising. “If anything happened to them—”

He stops abruptly, turning to face me. “You think I would hurt them?” His voice is low, but there is a dangerous edge to it. “Kids? Is that how you think of me?”

“I think you would do whatever it takes to get what you want,” I fire back.

His jaw tightens as he stares at me with that blanket stare and I swear for a second I feel he is about to snap.

Instead, he turns and keeps walking, leaving me to stew in my anger.

“And what exactly is it that I want? Do you even know me well enough to guess?”

“You-”

“This is the second -well, third time if we are being literal - we have met and each time was not enough to get to know each other well.”

It was enough for me to get pregnant though.

“So,” he continues. “Instead of you being bias, why not try and get off your high horse and get to know me instead. It will save you a lot of future embarrassment.”

“You-!”

“Mom!”

The sound of my children’s voices makes my knees weak, a sob escapes my throat as they come running toward me.

My son and daughter, my entire world.

I drop to my knees, gathering them in my arms, holding them so tight I am sure it must hurt, but I can’t let go.

“Oh, my babies,” I whisper, my voice trembling. I pull back just enough to look at their faces, cupping each of their cheeks. “Are you okay? Did they hurt you? Did anyone do anything to you?”

They shake their heads quickly, their eyes wide and full of innocence. “No, Mom,” Leo, my son says, his voice steady. “They were nice to us.”

“Nice?” I repeat, the word foreign and ridiculous.

“They didn’t hurt us, I promise,” Lia adds. “They gave us food and beds. And the doctor lady was really gentle when she checked us.”

I glance between them, searching for any sign of a lie, but all I see is the truth. Relief crashes over me, but it is quickly followed by a simmering anger. None of this changes the fact that they were taken from me -kept from me-, even if they were treated well.

“I am going to get you out of here,” I say firmly, brushing a strand of hair from Lia's face.

Leo frowns at that. “Why do we have to leave?” he asks.

The question catches me off guard. “What do you mean, why? This isn’t our home.”

“But... it’s nice here,” Lia says softly, glancing around the room. “It’s safe.”

“Safe?” I repeat, incredulous. “This is a pack, remember? Packs aren’t safe for us.”

“This one is different,” Leo says. “They didn’t hurt us, Mom. They said if we stay, we can train to be pack warriors.”

“What?” My voice comes out sharper than I intend, and they both flinch. “Who told you that?”

“The Alpha,” Lia replies, looking up at me with wide eyes.

I whirl around, glaring at Travis, who stands silently by the door, watching us. My blood boils at the smug look on his face.

“You told my children they could stay here and train?” I demand.

“I told them the truth,” he says simply.

“You had no right!” I snap.

“They deserve to know their options,” he counters, crossing his arms.

I turn back to my kids, my heart sinking at the hopeful looks on their faces. “You don’t want this,” I say firmly. “We are better off on our own. We always have been.”

“But, Mom,” Lia whispers, “I am tired of running. Aren’t you?”

Her words hit me like a punch to the gut and I stare at her, speechless even as Leo nods in agreement.

“We could stay,” he says. “Just for a little while. Until it’s safe to leave.”

I close my eyes, trying to keep the tears at bay. I have spent years keeping us safe, keeping us together, and now they are asking me to stop.

To trust a pack, a pack led by the man we barely even know.

I feel my wolf stir, her presence soothing yet insistent. She likes the idea. She likes him. But I shove her thoughts aside. This isn’t about me or her. This is about my children.

Before I can say anything, an ear-piercing alarm blares through the building. My instincts kick in immediately, and I pull my children close, shielding them with my body.

“What’s happening?” I demand, my voice rising over the chaos.

Travis is already moving, his expression grim. “Stay here,” he orders.

“Like hell I will,” I snap, my ears straining to pick up the panicked voices echoing through the halls.

I catch snippets of conversations, fragments of fear and confusion.

“Intruders at the northern border.”

“No forewarning."

“Seems like a pack.”

Then, through the noise, one phrase cuts through like a knife.

“Alpha Gaines and his warriors, they are here.”

The words freeze me in place and my heart begins to pound as dread settles in my chest.

Gaines.

Of course, he’d come here

The bastard has been searching for me for years

It was ridiculous of me to think he would stop now.

“Mom?”

I tighten my grip on my children, my mind racing. If he is here, it’s not for anything good.

“Stay with me,” I whisper to my kids, my voice shaking. “No matter what happens, stay with me.”

TRAVISAuthor's note: Hi my lovelies. I am so sorry for the disappearance. I had some personal stuff that took me out but I am back now, and I will do my best not to disappoint. Now back to teg story.“They are being followed,” Mark says as he walks in.“What? Who?” I ask as I look up from the maps spread out on my desk.“Louisa’s parents. They are being shadowed.”“By who? Gaines? Why? He is the one who sent them here.”“Not, Gaines himself, but his people. Some of his wolves. But they are not the only ones. Two of Selene’s acolytes are shadowing Gaines Wolves."“Oh, fuck. This is going to be an issue, isn't it?““Most likely. We are going to need to find a solution to nip it in the bud.”“Hmm,” I mutter as I take a seat. “Has Tammy informed Louisa about their arrival?”“Hmm, she headed over to the cottage early this morning. They should be-”Knock. Knock.“Alpha, it is Tammy,” her voice echoes from the door. “Louisa is with me.”Mark and I exchange a glance before I nod towards the

LOUISA I wake up in a start and for a long second, I remain still, trying to figure out what had woken me up. It is already morning, but not early enough for the sun rays to start peeking through the windows. It had taken me a long time to fall asleep last night. Between being in a new place -a pack, to be exact-, having my children so close to Travis, and then that fight with Tammy, it is a wonder I had managed to even get some shut eye. I hear it again The knock. It must have been what had woken me up. Without hesitation, I get out of the bed, quietly so as not to wake the kids, and quickly make my way to the door Another knock begins to sound just as I pull the door open. It is Tammy. “Oh,” I gasp in relief. Glad that she had decided to come back. “I am so glad you came back,” I rush to say. “I didn't like how we left th

TRAVIS “We have a series of problems,” Mark says as he strolls into my study. “I suggest you brace yourself.” “What is it now?” I groan as I lean back in my chair. “Can't a man get one moment's peace?” “Not if they are an Alpha of a leading pack,” he retorts. “It is the price of greatness.” “Sure, whatever. What happened?” “Per your instructions, we followed Gaines to monitor his movements after he left the pack, and guess who visited him not long after he got home?” “I am not as obsessed with the man as he is with me, so how the hell am I supposed to know that?” I ask. “Who was it?” “Selene.” “Selene? Selene Lance? The deranged witch?” “The one and only.” “Wonderful,” I mutter. “Just bloody wonderful. What could a self made, important, egotistical witch like her want with a misogynistic and backwards man like Gaines?”

  • THE LUNA'S RECKONING    CHAPTER 17: PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE

LOUISA “Thirteen years,” Tammy says as she walks over to the couch with two cups of coffee and hands me one. “I haven't seen you in thirteen years. I thought I would never see you again,” she says as she sits down beside me. We are in one of the guest cottages, private and closed to outside eyes and the kids have thankfully been put to bed, leaving her and me to catch up. “I know. I thought the same too,” I whisper. “If anything, I am glad I get to see you again.” “I want to know everything,” she demands as she stares into my eyes. “Can you imagine my fear and panic when I didn't hear from you for weeks. I tried sneaking into the Blood Moon Pack several times, but when I almost got caught the last time I stopped. I thought they had done something to you. Maybe they had found out that you had snuck out. It was only after like 3 months when by pure coincidence I caught sight of some of Gaines' wolves, searching fo

SELENE It is a shit hole. An archaic, misogynistic, rustic, backwater shit hole. I don’t walk in alone. Of course not. They will never allow an outsider to enter without keeping a close eye on them. Two men flank me, one slightly ahead, the other behind, like I am some unwanted guest they have to babysit. The one in front doesn’t even look at me properly, which already grates on my nerves. His voice is clipped, dismissive, like he thinks he is better than me. “Wait here,” he mutters, already half-turned as if I don’t deserve his full attention. I bite back a laugh. Oh, how cute. A man raised under Gaines’s shadow, puffing his chest out like he owns authority. He doesn’t even realize the only reason his heart still beats is because I haven’t go

  • THE LUNA'S RECKONING    CHAPTER 15: RAGE

GAINES’ POV “Bastard!” I snarl the moment I step back into my packhouse, completely losing it. The fury that’s been boiling inside me finally erupts, tearing through me like wildfire. ‘The disrespect!” I spit as I grab the nearest chair and fling it across the room watching as it smashes into the wall, splintering into pieces. The sound is satisfying, but not enough- not nearly enough to drown out the rage pounding in my skull. How dare she? HOW DARE SHE?! Louisa must have known I was there for her. She must have. And yet… yet, she didn’t come out Didn’t even show her face. She let that bastard Travis stand there and mock me. She let him humiliate me, like I was nothing, like I was beneath him. “Her own Alpha!” I snarl, grabbing the edge of my desk and flipp
