Three weeks later - Luna 16.5 months old, Alice 12 months old, Hope 1-month-old.

Alice took her first steps on her first birthday.

Not toward her parents. Toward Luna.

Sarah watched from across the room, face carefully blank as Alice wobbled three steps before falling into Luna's arms.

"Good job, grabby!" Luna caught her, spinning her around. "You walked!"

"Walk! I walk!" Alice was ecstatic and immediately tried again.

Marcus cheered. Katherine clapped. I smiled despite the tension thick enough

He hung up.Luna approached me after Alice ran off to play. "Sarah was here.""How did you know?""Saw her hiding behind the wall. Recognized her from old photos," Luna's voice was careful. "Does Alice know?""No. Marcus said not to tell her.""Good. Alice has enough trauma without adding 'birth mother visited but didn't want to see you' to the list." Luna watched Alice pick flowers. "Is Sarah okay?""No. She's very much not okay. Marcus is trying to find her before she hurts herself.""Will he succeed?""I don't know, baby. I really don't know."Marcus found Sarah six hours later. She'd walked to the cliff at the territory edge, the same place Damien had thrown me from years ago.She was standing at the edge when Marcus arrived."Sarah, step back. Please." Marcus approached slowly."Why? So I can keep existing in agony? Keep being a burden everyone has to manage?" Sarah's voice was calm, resigned. "I'm tired, Marcus. So tired of fighting myself every day.""I know. But Sarah, please.

  • THE LUNA WHO CONQUERED DEATH   Sarah's Return-1

Six weeks after the warSarah appeared at the border without warning. The guards called me immediately, voices uncertain. "Alpha, Sarah Reed is requesting entry. She looks bad. What do you want us to do?"My stomach dropped. "Escort her to the Pack House. I'll meet you there."I hadn't seen Sarah in over a year. Not since she'd visited to watch Alice from a distance, broken and unable to face her daughter directly. She looked worse now.Gaunt, hollow-eyed, moving like a ghost. Her clothes hung loose, her hair unwashed, her hands trembling constantly."Sera." Her voice was barely a whisper. "I heard about the war. About the casualties. I needed to know if Alice survived.""Alice is fine. Safe. Healthy." I studied her carefully. "Sarah, what are you doing here?""I don't know. I just started walking and ended up here." Sarah's eyes were unfocused. "Is it true? Ninety-seven dead?""Yes.""Marcus?""Alive. He fought but survived." I hesitated. "Sarah, does he know you're here?""No. I lef

She cried against my shoulder, all the fear and pain and exhaustion pouring out."I'm so scared, Mama. Scared of flashbacks, scared of nightmares, scared of my own brain turning against me. How do I live like this?""One day at a time. With help. With people who love you." I held her tighter. "You survived the war. You'll survive this too."Alice found us like that, immediately inserting herself into the hug."Why is everyone saying? Stop being sad!" She patted our faces. "I make it better!""How are you going to do that, grabby?" Luna asked, voice watery."With ice cream! Ice cream fixes everything!" Alice announced confidently.Despite everything, Luna laughed. "Ice cream doesn't fix PTSD.""Have you tried? Maybe it does!" Alice was completely serious."You know what? Let's test that theory." Luna stood, wiping her eyes. "Ice cream therapy. Can't hurt."We went to the kitchen, three broken people eating ice cream at midnight because a three-year-old thought it would help. And someho

  • THE LUNA WHO CONQUERED DEATH   When Shields Crack-1

One month after the warLuna stopped teaching mid-class.Just froze, staring at nothing, shield demonstration half-formed in her hands."Luna?" A student approached carefully. "Are you okay?"No response. Luna's eyes were distant, unfocused, somewhere else entirely.Katherine, supervising from the back, moved quickly. "Class was dismissed. Luna needs a break. Practice independently."The students filed out, worried glances backward.I arrived minutes later, having been called immediately.Luna stood exactly where she'd frozen, trembling, shield still flickering weakly in her hands."Baby, what happened?" I touched her shoulder gently. She flinched violently. "Don't touch me! They're breaking through! I can't hold them!""Luna, there's no one here. You're safe." I kept my voice calm despite panic rising in my chest."The shields are failing! Everyone's dying! I can't stop it!" Luna's voice rose to a scream. "Help them! Someone will help them!""She's having a flashback," Dr. Chen said,

Luna's nightmares intensified over the next week.I'd hear her screaming, run to her room, find her tangled in sheets, fighting invisible enemies."They're breaking through! I can't hold the shield! They're dying because I'm not strong enough!" She'd thrash violently, still asleep, still trapped in battle."Luna, wake up! You're safe!" I'd shake her gently until her eyes opened. She'd stare at me, disoriented, then remember. "Just a dream. Again.""Same one?""Always the same. Shields failing, wolves dying, everyone looking at me like it's my fault." Luna's voice was hollow. "Dr. Chen says recurring nightmares mean unprocessed trauma. My brain is stuck in the moment of failure.""You didn't fail. You protected fifty injured wolves for two hours with shields that shouldn't have been possible.""But ninety-seven died anyway. My shields didn't save them." Luna pulled her knees up. "Success and failure coexist. I saved some, lost others. The brain can't reconcile both.""What does Dr. Che

  • THE LUNA WHO CONQUERED DEATH   The Price of Peace-1

Two weeks after the warThe nightmares came for Alice first."Mama! Mama! The fire's coming! Everything's burning!" She screamed at three AM, thrashing in sweat-soaked sheets.I ran to her room, finding her sitting up, eyes wide with terror at things only she could see."No fire, baby. You're safe. Just a dream." I gathered her close."But I saw it! The Pack House is burning! Wolves dying! Blood everywhere!" Alice sobbed at me. "Make it stop, Mama! Make the pictures stop!""I can't make them stop, sweetheart. But I can stay with you until they fade." I rocked her gently. "Breathe with me. In, out. In, out."Alice's breathing slowly calmed, but the trembling didn't stop."Why do I see bad things when I sleep? I wasn't even here for the fighting!" Her voice broke with confusion."Your brain knows something scary happened. It's trying to process fear even though you weren't present." I wiped her tears. "It's called anxiety. It's normal after scary events.""I don't like normal if normal

  • THE LUNA WHO CONQUERED DEATH   Six Months Earlier

I woke up screaming. My hands clawed at my throat, searching for silver chains that weren't there. My lungs heaved, dragging in air that didn't taste like frozen river water. My heart hammered against my ribs, alive, terrified, and beating."Sera? Sera!"The bedroom door burst open and Damien rushe

  • THE LUNA WHO CONQUERED DEATH   Death's Embr

The silver burns more painfully than I expected death to feel. They gripped the chains tightly around my wrists, my ankles, my throat. Each link searing into my skin like liquid fire, eating through flesh until I can smell my own burning. I should be screaming. I think I was, moments ago. Now there'

  • THE LUNA WHO CONQUERED DEATH   Testing Reality

My mother's journal felt like it weighed a thousand pounds in my hands.I sat in her old leather chair, dust motes dancing in the sunlight streaming through the windows, and read about a legacy I never knew existed. About power, I never knew I had. About a destiny that had been hidden from me my en
