Aldric’s POV

The door for Elara's room clicked shut behind me.

For a moment I just stood there, my breathing low.

Elara’s voice still lingered in the back of my mind.

That single sentence troubled me more than I had been in a while.

“I can’t trust you.”

I exhaled slowly, dragging a hand down my face as I leaned back against the wall.

Every time she looked at me with those eyes of hers, something just seems to twist inside me.

I hated that it did. I hate that she alone affected me more than a hu

She admitted the kiss and confessed she was sorry..And all I had given her was one word.Okay.God, I was pathetic.I should have told her I was hurt or I should have told her I was afraid.Heck, I should have even snapped at her in anger.Instead, I had retreated from her her and from my real emotions.I dragged a hand down my face and exhaled sharply.“Okay,” I muttered again, the word tasting bitter. She had deserved more.Just then, a sharp and urgent knock struck the door.I straightened immediately, burying every

  • THE LYCAN KING’S CLAIM   CHAPTER 148

Elara POV“Seraphina?!”She stood before our table like she owned not just the restaurant, but the air inside it.She stood there composed and regal as ever. She was dressed in a pale ivory gown that caught the evening light.Anita was the first to move. Her chair scraped sharply against the floor as she rose to her feet.“You need to leave,” Anita said flatly. “Now.”Seraphina’s gaze didn’t shift from me. “Good evening to you as well.”“I’m not here for pleasantries.” Anita stepped slightly in front of me, shielding me with her body. “You don’t get to walk in here like nothing happened.”The entire restaurant pretended not to listen, but I could still feel their glances.Seraphina finally looked at her, slowly and carefully. “I wasn’t aware I needed your permission to enter a public space.”Anita laughed, her tone sharp and humorless. “Alpha Queen or whatever title you’re parading around with… I don’t give a damn.”A few gasps rippled through nearby tables.“You tried to have my frie

  • THE LYCAN KING’S CLAIM   CHAPTER 147

Elara POVThe morning sun slipped through the thin curtains of my room, like it had every right to enter or like nothing had even happened the night before. It brushed against my face gently, it's touch warm, but I felt none of it.I laid still on the bed, staring at the ceiling, replaying the same moment over and over again.Okay.That was all Aldric had said. After everything I had poured out there in front of him.I stood there across him like a fool, pride thrown out the window, explaining the mate bond with Elton… something I never even asked for.Explaining the ritual… how I chose Elton to protect Aldric from the darkness clawing at my insides and how I didn't want him to go through it, explaining the kiss… how it meant nothing, how I regretted it, how I would take it back if I could, but most of all, how sorry I truly was.And all he gave me was one flat word.Okay.There was no anger, no fight, no accusations.Just… acceptance. Or worse… indifference.I rolled onto my side, hu

Aldric POVThe moment my voice filled the room, Elara froze. Her hand was still wrapped around the door handle, her fingers tense and her knuckles already going pale.Slowly, she turned to me.Her eyes found mine, and whatever relief flickered there vanished just as quickly, replaced by something sharp and furious. She marched toward me immediately, her boots pounding hard against the marble floor.“So this is how you’re going to act now?” she demanded, stopping just a few steps away from me. “Lock me up here like some fragile thing and forget I even exist?”“Elara,” I started, instinctively reaching for her, “it’s not like that—”“Then how is it?” she cut in, her voice rising. “Tell me, Aldric. Because from where I’m standing, you vanished the moment I stopped being convenient and started having demons.”The words struck harder than I expected. I felt them land in my chest.I hated the words, not because she said it or how far from the truth it was, but because I myself made it look

  • THE LYCAN KING’S CLAIM   CHAPTER 145

ELARA POVThe doorknob twisted violently, rattling against the wood like it might snap clean off.My grip tightened around the wooden stick I’d grabbed from the corner, my heart hammering so loud it drowned out my thoughts.Anita stood a step behind me, her breath shallow and her eyes fixed on the door.Whoever it was, they weren’t knocking. The door slammed open with a force that made it crash against the wall.I lifted the stick instinctively, every muscle tensing up immediately…And then I froze.“Jonas?” The name slipped out of me like a breath I hadn’t realized I was holding. He stood in the doorway, his chest rising and falling and his sharp eyes scanning the room before locking onto me.Relief hit me so hard my knees almost buckled.I lowered the stick slowly, my hand shaking now.“Oh thank the moons,” I breathed. “It's you…”I turned slightly, glancing back at Anita. “I know him, he's good.”Her shoulders loosened just a fraction, though she didn’t fully relax. She straightene
