Isabella POV

He had a sports car. A freaking sports car. I knew he was a nerd. He looked like one. Yet, he had to be the most stylish nerd in existence.

I was in a cute little black dress with a pair of New Balance, sitting in his passenger seat. He rolled down the roof, even if it was dark and windy, before starting the car.

Still in silence.

I shifted uncomfortably in the leather seat, pulling at the seatbelt and doing everything other than cure the awkward silence in the air. He was leaning into his seat, one hand on the wheel and the other resting on the window.

“So what do you think about my baby brother?”

I wasn’t expecting him to say anything, so hearing his voice was a shock; one that took a few seconds to recover. Under the dim street lights, I saw him roll his eyes.

"A few hours in town and he already has you speechless?” he murmured, making a turn. “That’s a first.”

I ignored him. "Why is football played here in the middle of the night?"

He glances at me. “You’re joking, aren’t you?”

"What? Where I'm from, this is such a strange thing. Football is played before the sun goes out. How else do you want to see all the fouls and touchdowns?"

There’s something in his tone when he says, “You’ll see.”

What is it that he’s not telling me?

I leaned in closer. “Do you have contacts on behind your glasses? Your eyes… they are like…golden.”

“You’re in my personal space, Miss.”

I swallowed. “Sorry.”

“Good.”

Another minute of silence.

“Hey, do you know anything about the howls that sounded a few hours ago? You must have heard it. It was so loud.”

“Why are you asking me about that?” He sounded like I was bothering him.

“Because Marv didn’t tell me what it was. He looked really worried, though, and I just…”

"Do you always talk this much?"

I stopped. “What?”

"Marv had better stop asking for favors. Driving is meant to be peaceful and quiet."

My lips parted to say something, but I slammed them shut when I realized that for the first time ever, I'd been rendered speechless.

The rest of the ride happened in silence, and the moment he pulled up at the parking lot of what looked like the high school football field, I was out of the car, practically running away from him. I knew it was probably a foolish thing to do since I didn’t know anyone else around here.

But I couldn’t bear to spend one more second with him. I was scared I was going to be rendered speechless even more.

And I hated feeling that way.

It must be a major game because every inch of the bleachers was full. I didn’t know what seats were allocated to strangers like me, so I just stood by the side, staring as the cheerleaders danced in the centre of the field.

“You must be Isabella,” I heard someone say from behind me. When I turned around, I came face to face with the feminine version of the jerk I’d just spent the last fifteen minutes with. She was pretty, with golden eyes and wavy brown hair.

And she had glasses on too.

I must look like a burlap sack in front of her.

“Yeah,” I breathed, flashing her a grim smile. “At this point, I won’t be surprised if every single person in Westside Eden has heard about my arrival.”

She laughed easily. “I’m Fiona. It’s nice to meet you.”

She looked so young. I still couldn’t fathom how she had two grown boys.

“Same here, although it’s going to be an incredibly short meeting because I’ll be gone by tomorrow morning, and I…”

"Told you," the nerdy jerk appeared from nowhere, leaning on the side of the bleachers. "She talks too much."

"Come on, Aiden," Fiona chided. "You don't have to be a jerk around her."

“Ouch, Mother!” He placed a hand over his heart. “You just hurt me. You called your favorite son a jerk.”

“Okay, smart mouth. You are not my favorite son. I love you and Marv equally.”

“That’s what you say to make yourself feel better,” he laughed, moving towards her. He wrapped a hand around her shoulders and planted a kiss on her hair. “But I’ll take it.”

It was strange. I hadn’t known Aiden for more than a few minutes, but I’d been so certain he never smiled. And now, he just laughed with his mom.

But when he turned to me, every bit of that humor was gone. “Marv saved you a seat along with the players’ family up there. Mom can walk you there.”

“And where do you think you are going?” Fiona asked him, turning around.

“I got some stuff to handle.”

Something seemed to pass between them, because Fiona nodded and grabbed my hand. “Let’s go.”

I looked back at Aiden for a minute as he crossed the parking lot. But he didn’t go for his car. Instead, he stalked out into the woods, his brown hair disappearing with him.

“Okay,” I breathed. “Strange.”

"What's strange?" Fiona asked, leading me to the front row. People moved naturally to let us pass without asking a question. It seemed like they were expecting us. Like they knew better than to complain. It was odd that I thought so, but it was the most accurate explanation.

“Everything…the town… the howling…”

I felt her pause abruptly, but it was gone so fast that it might have been a figment of my imagination. But the worried look that crossed her face… I couldn’t have imagined that.

“Fiona…”

“Oh! Look! There’s Marv.”

She reached our designated seats and plopped down, waving at Marv excitedly. Marv waved back, and then gave me a nod when his eyes fell on me.

I sat down next to Fiona. “Do you know anything about the howling?”

She pursed her lips, then turned to me. “What did it sound like?”

“Like a pack of wolves or

something.”

“Then do well to stay away from the woods.”

Isabella POV "You're doing the thing again," Sheila said, snapping her fingers in front of my face. "The staring-into-space thing.""I'm fine." I locked my phone screen, even though the photo was already burned into my memory ... that girl's face, that caption, that comment. Future Mrs. Kingston. "Just tired.""Uh-huh." She clearly didn't believe me, but the bell saved me from having to explain, and by the time the final period ended, I'd almost managed to shove the whole thing into a drawer in my head labeled deal with this later.Marv was waiting by my locker, bouncing on his heels like he had somewhere urgent to be."So," he said. "I've been thinking.""Dangerous.""Hilarious. I've been thinking that you've officially survived one whole week of Westside Eden, which means it's time for the official welcome tour.""The what?""The Marv Kingston Guaranteed You'll-Never-Want-To-Leave Tour." He grinned, and it was such an easy, sunny grin that some of the tightness in my chest actually

Isabella POV"Okay, that was weird, right?" I said. "Tell me that was weird.""That was so weird." Sheila grabbed my tray and mine both, hauling us three tables away like the distance itself could fix it. "Also, ten out of ten, do not make eye contact with the nose ring guy again. He gives off serial killer energy.""Thanks, very comforting.""I try." She dropped into a seat and immediately stole one of my fries, completely unbothered by the fact that my hands were still shaking a little. "Okay. Since you're clearly spiraling, let me distract you with gossip. Everyone in this town either works for the Kingstons or is scared of them. That's basically the whole social order, in one sentence.""You said that already.""Did I? Feels important enough to say twice." She leaned in, lowering her voice like she was handing over classified information. "So, Marv's dad basically runs the town. Old money, old everything, nobody really knows the full story. And Aiden's, like, the heir. Which is a

Isabella POV "You're staring," a voice said behind me. "It's kind of creepy, actually."I spun around so fast I nearly dropped my schedule. A girl with wild curly hair and an even wilder grin was watching me like I was the most entertaining thing to happen to this hallway all year."I wasn't staring," I said. "I was surviving.""Same thing, honestly." She grabbed both my hands like she needed to check I was real. "Oh my God. You're actually here. I was starting to think I made you up.""You've never even met me.""We've texted for three weeks. That counts." She looped her arm through mine like we'd known each other for years, not minutes. "I'm Sheila, by the way. In case you forgot the name of the only person in this school who actually likes you already.""Bold of you to assume anyone dislikes me.""Give it an hour." She steered me down the hallway, completely unbothered by the fact that every single head turned as we passed. I kept my chin up and my face blank, the way you learn to

Aiden's POVShe doesn't move.I think she had even forgotten how to breathe, her lips were cracked open as she stared intensely at me in surprise. She had this astonished look, so was I. I didn't believe I could say that, more like I was pushed into saying that. Then her voice came out choking, “ Did I hear you right?” She still didn't believe that I could say it, her eyes lingered over my form.My lips thinned, I looked down at her petite figure as I noticed how close we were and I pulled away immediately, stumbling backwards with an excuse.“ It's” I tried to explain. She cut me short, raising her eyebrows as she tattled in a mimicking tone, I believe she was mimicking me“ The great Aiden apologizes. This should be a headline because…”I think I never understood how serious this was until she had said it like this. I stood awkwardly in place, scratching my hair softly as I croaked, “ That's not what you think.”But she doesn't stop, she's engrossed in her own little world.I cleare

Isabelle's POV “ Bells.” My dad's voice rang out. I shot up from the bed, dark circles underneath my eyes as my hair resembled a bird nest and my bedsheet were all rumpled. I let out a grunt. I just stared at the door, unmoving as I scratched my head with a tired yawn. I felt I was about to fall back into bed, I felt so tired like my arms were about to give out but I just couldn't. My eyes refused to close. My brain couldn't shut down. “ Ahhhh! This is all his fault.” I screamed loudly, I pulled at my hair. My mind went back to that jerk’s face Aiden and a smile crept up my face. “ Stop it, Isabelle.” I convinced myself, slapping my cheeks as I tried to focus. I was pulled away from my thoughts as my dad's knock and worried voice came through the door, “ Bells, are you alright? Should I come in?” He asked.“ No.” I yelled. I stood up from the bed, walking straight to the mirror as I wretched from how messed up I looked right now. He sighed. “ Okay, just be fast. Breakfast

Aiden's POV My eyes refused to shut, my wolf stirring within me. “ Micah.” I sighed, tossing in the bed as my hand clenched the bedsheet to hold myself. Micah growled within me, howling one thing over and over again, “ Those boys were uncanny.” He repeated. Those words didn't stop, he seemed so sure about it. And I couldn't dissuade that feeling within my heart. Their scent. The malicious look on their faces. Even their footprint. Every single thing, I remembered it and it wasn't just that one player but the entire team. There was something about them that didn't sit well with me from the moment I set my eyes on them. “ Micah.” I called out. He doesn't answer right away, then he grunts as I feel my body rumble as he says, “ They aren't normal.” We both had the same thought, those were the outsiders that had been howling. But why were they here? For Isabelle? Why would they be here for a human?I stood up slowly, moving to the window that showed me the view of the pack as I s
