An Apex in the Ravine

POV: Bronislava “Slava” Ignatova

The metallic stench of ozone burned my nostrils as smoke curled up from the shattered canyon wall.

Before the remaining two rogues could even recover from the thunderous shockwave that had thrown their leader into the stone, the air inside the narrow ravine turned impossibly heavy. The temperature didn’t just drop. It plummeted into an absolute, suffocating freeze.

Tsar Vaelin stood between me and the feral beasts. But he was no longer just a man in armor.

A sound tore from his chest, a deep, ancient growl that vibrated so violently through the earth that the loose gravel beneath my bleeding knees began to dance. The black runed broadsword in his right hand burst into blinding, pitch black flames, casting long, monstrous shadows across the jagged rock faces of the gorge.

“Vaelin…” I rasped, my voice barely a whisper against the roaring static of the dark magic filling the air.

He didn’t answer. He couldn’t.

The black runic tattoos crawling along his neck exploded with a blinding, violent violet light. His broad shoulders expanded, his leather tunic tearing at the seams as his spine lengthened with a horrific series of loud, wet cracks. Sharp, obsidian fur erupted from his skin, swallowing his white gold tunic, while his fingers lengthened into nine inch, razor sharp steel claws.

His transformation wasn’t like the quick, graceful shifts of the North Ridge warriors. It was violent. It was primal. It was the absolute, unbridled fury of an ancient Lycan sovereign tearing through its human cage.

He rose to a towering eight feet, his massive, black furred Lycan frame completely blocking out the sky above us. When he turned his head, his face was no longer human. It was a nightmare of silver fanged jaws and glowing, molten gold eyes that burned like twin suns in the pitch black abyss.

The two remaining rogues, rabid and crazed as they were, instantly realized their mistake.

The blood lust in their eyes vanished, replaced by an absolute, paralyzed terror. They dropped their snouts to the snow, letting out sharp, pained whimpers as their bodies tried to flatten themselves against the frozen ground, surrendering to the overwhelming, crushing weight of a true Apex Alpha’s aura.

Vaelin didn’t grant them mercy.

With a speed that defied his colossal size, Vaelin blurred across the snow.

SWIFT.

His massive clawed hand swept through the air. The pitch black flames coating his claws cut through the throat of the second rogue before the beast could even draw a breath to scream. Black blood sprayed across the snow, instantly freezing into crimson ice as the beast’s headless body slammed into the canyon wall.

The third rogue turned to flee, scrambling over the sharp rocks in sheer panic.

Vaelin didn’t even chase it. He simply reached out with his left hand, his claws curling into a tight fist.

A wave of pure, gravity crushing Lycan magic detonated across the narrow floor of the ravine. The third rogue was crushed flat against the stone floor by an invisible, suffocating weight, its bones shattering with a sickening, collective CRUNCH that echoed through the gorge like snapping timber.

In less than five seconds, the threat was gone. The three massive, terrifying beasts that had backed me into a corner lay motionless in the crimson stained snow.

Silence descended upon the ravine, heavy, thick, and suffocating.

Vaelin stood in the center of the carnage, his giant Lycan chest heaving in deep, ragged breaths. Black smoke curled up from his fur, and his massive silver claws dripped with dark rogue blood. He slowly turned his head, his glowing, molten gold eyes locking directly onto me.

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird.

I lay in the melting slush, my body completely paralyzed by the aftermath of the poison purge. My hair, now a striking blend of obsidian black and platinum silver, was matted with sweat and mud. The crimson glow beneath my skin had settled into a slow, fragile thrumming, leaving me defenseless, broken, and completely at the mercy of the towering monster standing before me.

He took a slow, heavy step toward me.

The sheer, ancient weight of his Lycan aura made the air thin, threatening to choke the little breath I had left in my lungs. My inner wolf thrashed weakly, not out of fear, but out of a wild, inexplicable recognition that made my soul tremble.

“He’s coming for us,” my wolf whispered, her voice layered with awe and a strange, terrifying surrender.

“Vaelin…” I choked out, pulling the torn edges of his obsidian cloak closer around my shivering shoulders. “Please…”

He stopped two feet away.

Slowly, deliberately, the towering Lycan beast sank to his knees in the deep snow, bringing his terrifying, blood stained face down to my eye level. The heat radiating off his massive body hit me like an open oven, instantly melting the ice clinging to my eyelashes.

He extended his massive, clawed hand. The same claws that had just severed a rogue’s spine were now trembling slightly as he hovered his palm an inch from my face.

He didn’t touch me with his sharp nails. Instead, he gently brushed the back of his massive, fur covered wrist against my hollow cheek, wiping away a smear of black poison.

A soft, low rumble echoed from his chest, not a battle growl, but a deep, protective purr that vibrated straight into my heart.

The golden glare in his eyes softened, the wild, demonic fury melting away into a profound, terrifying tenderness.

“You are safe, little wolf,” a voice resonated inside my mind, a deep, telepathic echo of Vaelin’s human voice, carrying all the gravel and weight of his true soul. “I have you.”

Before I could answer, a sharp, piercing horn echoed from the top of the ravine cliffs.

High above us, dozens of bright, high powered searchlights cut through the dark clouds, illuminating the narrow canyon floor in a blinding white glare.

Vaelin’s head snapped up toward the cliff edge. His golden eyes narrowed as his Lycan growl returned, low and warning.

Standing at the top of the precipice, framed by the searchlights of three massive high council warships, stood Matrena.

She wasn’t wearing her blind priestess veil. Her eyes, no longer milky or blind, but glowing with a sickening, dark violet blood magic, stared directly down at us.

Beside her, holding an ancient bronze horn, stood Eva, her face twisted in a cold, triumphant sneer.

“Tsar Vaelin Volkov!” Matrena’s voice boomed down into the ravine, amplified by dark magic so powerful it vibrated the stone beneath my back. “By authority of the High Continental Council, you are caught harboring the forbidden Blood Heir! Yield her now, or we collapse this entire mountain upon your heads!”
