Bronislava "Slava" Ignatova

The cold in Siberia doesn’t only sit on your skin, it bites down until it touches bone. But inside the grand hall of the North Ridge Pack, the hearth burned hot enough to make the air smell like charred pine and roasted meat.

I wiped a rag across the long oak table, pushing my red, raw hands to work faster. My eighteen-year-old body was exhausted, every muscle aching from four hours of scrubbing floors, but I couldn't slow down. Today wasn't just another day of surviving at the bottom of the pack hierarchy. Today was my eighteenth birthday.

Today was the Mate-Marking Ceremony.

"Faster, Slava," a sharp voice snapped from the doorway.

I didn't need to look up to know it was Lady Maria, one of the senior pack matrons. She stood with her arms crossed over her embroidered velvet tunic, her grey-streaked hair pulled back into a braid so tight it smoothed out her wrinkles.

"The Alpha’s court will be here in an hour," she continued, her eyes cold as she watched me wring out the dirty water into my wooden bucket. "If there is a single smudge on the grand head table, I’ll have you sweeping the courtyard in the middle of tonight's storm. Do you hear me?"

"Yes, Lady Maria," I said, keeping my head bowed. My voice was low, careful, and polite.

In the North Ridge Pack, an Omega without family lived on thin ice. My parents had passed away from a strange, sudden fever when I was just a child, leaving me under the care of the pack priestess, Matrena. Without strong Alpha blood in my veins or so everyone believed I was relegated to the heavy labor, the scraps, and the endless silence expected of low-ranking wolves.

Yet, despite the ache in my chest and the calluses on my palms, a small flame of hope kept me warm.

Tonight.

When a shifter turns eighteen, the faint, dormant pull of the mate bond awakens. For months, whenever Kirill Rostov our pack’s soon-to-be Alpha walked past me in the village, a strange, electric static buzzed beneath my skin. He was strong, broad-shouldered, with dirty blonde hair and hazel eyes that always seemed to search for something in the distance. He had never spoken to me as anything more than a pack servant, but the invisible thread was there. I felt it. I knew he felt it too, even if he tried to hide the sudden tension in his jaw whenever our eyes met

Tonight, at the ceremony, the Moon Goddess would reveal the bonds. The mate-mark would burn onto the skin, sealing two souls together.

He will see it, I told myself, scrubbing harder at a stubborn wax stain on the wood. He will have to acknowledge me. I won't be just the girl who cleans the hall anymore.

"Slava, child.

The gentle, rasping voice pulled me from my thoughts. I turned to see Matrena stepping carefully into the hall, her wooden staff tapping softly against the stone floor. She was wrapped in her heavy, dark woolen shawl, her head covered in a traditional black scarf. Her milky, blind eyes stared blankly ahead, but she moved with a quiet grace that always commanded respect.

"Matrena," I murmured, rushing over to catch her arm and guide her away from a wet patch of floor. "You shouldn't be walking around the hall while they’re setting up. It’s chaotic.

The old woman smiled, her heavily weathered face wrinkling like aged parchment. She reached up with a thin, trembling hand, pressing her cold palm against my cheek.

"I came to see you, little bird," she whispered, her voice like rustling dry leaves. "Eighteen years. Look how much you’ve grown. Your mother would have wept to see you today."

A familiar pang of grief struck my heart, but I managed a faint smile. "Do you think... do you think today will change things for me, Matrena?

Matrena’s blind eyes flickered slightly, her hand freezing on my face. For a fraction of a second, an expression passed over her features, something dark, heavy, and unreadable, before it vanished back behind her maternal warmth.

"Fate works in strange ways, Slava," she murmured softly, her fingers gently smoothing a stray strand of my raven-black hair behind my ear. "The Moon Goddess gives us what we need, not always what we desire. Keep your heart strong tonight. No matter what happens."

Her words felt less like a blessing and more like a warning. A cold shiver ran down my spine, distinct from the Siberian draft seeping through the heavy wooden doors.

Before I could ask her what she meant, the heavy iron doors at the front of the hall burst open.

The cold wind roared inside, swirling snow across the polished floorboards, bringing with it the thick, suffocating scent of power, wine, and expensive perfumes.

The pack elite had arrived.

At the front of the crowd walked Kirill. He looked regal in his dark crimson tunic trimmed with thick black fur. His jaw was set tight, his dark hazel eyes scanning the room. Walking right beside him, her arm laced possessively through his, was Yevgeniya "Eva" Volkova.

Eva was the daughter of the pack’s wealthiest Beta lord. She was ethereal, with platinum ash-blonde hair styled in intricate Russian crown braids, her green eyes sharp and triumphant. She wore a gown of rich ivory silk that trailed behind her, completely unbothered by the winter chill.

As Kirill stepped into the room, his eyes instantly locked onto mine.

The air in my lungs froze.

That same electric pull snapped across the space between us. It was a pull so sharp, so violent, that my breath hitched in my throat. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. He feels it. The mate bond was reaching out, screaming at me, pulling my soul toward his.

I took half a step forward, my dirty rag dropping from my hand.

Kirill’s eyes darkened. A flash of something intense something desperate and pained flickered in his gaze as he looked at me standing there in my plain linen dress, covered in soapy water and ash.

Then, Eva leaned in close, whispering something in his ear. She raised her left arm, wiping a stray drop of snow from his shoulder.

As she did, the wide sleeve of her ivory gown fell back.

Glinting beneath the chandelier light, bound tightly around Eva’s wrist, was a strange, intricately carved silver bracelet embedding a glowing runic charm. The moment the charm caught the light, Kirill blinked. The dark, desperate look in his hazel eyes suddenly washed away, replaced by a strange, glazed calm.

He pulled his gaze away from me, turning his attention entirely to Eva. He smiled down at her, a practiced, cold smile and kissed the top of her hand.

My blood ran cold.

The heat in the room seemed to vanish. The static in the air snapped, twisting into a sharp, nauseating throb behind my temples. My chest tightened so severely I could barely breathe.

Why isn't he looking at me?

Matrena’s hand tightened on my shoulder, her grip surprisingly iron-strong for a woman so old. "Quiet, Slava," she whispered into my ear, her voice devoid of its earlier warmth. "Stay back. The ceremony is beginning.

The crowd gathered around the central dais. Drums began to beat a low, rhythmic rhythm that echoed against the stone pillars. The pack elders stepped forward, holding the ritual bowls of silver ash and holy oil.

Kirill led Eva up the steps of the dais. He stood at the center, looking out over the pack of hundreds who had gathered to watch their future Alpha claim his mate.

I stood near the edge of the shadows, pressed against the cold stone pillar, my hands trembling as I clutched my linen apron. Every instinct in my wolf screamed at me to step into the light, to call his name, to demand why the bond was pulling me toward him while he stood beside another woman.

Kirill raised his hands, signaling for silence. The heavy hall quieted until the only sound left was the howling Siberian blizzard outside.

"Members of the North Ridge," Kirill’s voice boomed, clear and authoritative. "Tonight, as I prepare to take full leadership of our bloodline, the Moon Goddess has blessed me. She has shown me the woman meant to rule by my side.

He turned to Eva, taking both of her hands in his.

My heart slammed into my throat. No.

"I present to you my true, fated mate, Yevgeniya Volkova," Kirill declared, his voice echoing off the high ceilings.

A loud cheer erupted from the crowd. Eva beamed, turning to face the noble lords, raising her linked hand with Kirill’s.

I couldn't move. I couldn't scream. The world around me spun into a blur of sound and light. It’s impossible. The mate bond was pulling at me. The static was burning through my veins. How could he name her?

Suddenly, Kirill’s eyes cut through the cheering crowd, landing directly back onto me standing in the dark.

His face hardened into a mask of cruel, unyielding authority.

"And before we begin the feast," Kirill called out, his voice turning icy as he pointed a finger straight at the shadow where I stood, "there is one more piece of pack business to settle."

The crowd quieted, turning their heads to follow his finger. Dozens of cold, judgmental eyes landed on me.

"Bronislava Ignatova," Kirill said, his words slicing through the air like a blade. "Step forward."
