Bronislava “Slava” Ignatova

His voice hung in the frozen air, a deep vibration that seemed to ripple through the snow beneath us.

“I finally found you.”

The words made no sense to my fading mind. I didn’t know this man. I’d never seen hair as white as frost, or eyes that burned gold like something ancient and starving. And yet his gloved hand cradling the back of my neck radiated a heat so intense it felt like a brand against my numb skin.

I tried to flinch away from him, but my body didn’t belong to me anymore.

“Don’t… touch me.” The words barely made it out, a fragile rasp that froze into mist the second it left my mouth.

He didn’t pull back. His eyes swept over me, the linen dress tearing at the seams, my bare shoulders, my raw, bleeding knees, and something dark tightened across his chest. His jaw clenched so hard I heard his teeth click, and the tattoos at his throat darkened like a shadow passing under his skin.

“You are dying,” he said. Not a question. A fact, stated the way you’d state the weather.

He started to wrap his cloak around me, and the moment his fingers brushed the scar at my collarbone, Kirill’s mark, the one his men had left behind, something in my blood gave out completely.

My body temperature dropped off a cliff.

The false warmth that had been coaxing me toward sleep vanished, and in its place came a pain so total it felt like my bones were shattering into glass. The dark spots swallowed my vision. The wind, his boots crunching in the snow, the war skimmer’s engines somewhere above the trees, all of it faded into a single dull hum, like being underwater.

Thump.

My heart gave a heavy, wet shudder.

Thump.

The gap between beats stretched, three seconds, five, and my lungs simply stopped trying. I could feel the cold reaching my heart itself now, freezing whatever was left of me from the inside.

This is it, something quiet said, in the furthest corner of my mind. This is where it ends.

I let my head fall back into his palm. Kirill’s rejection, Eva’s smile, Matrena’s blind, satisfied stare, all of it was slipping away into the black, and for one weak, honest second, I let it. It was so much easier to stop fighting than to keep fighting for a life that had never once fought for me.

“No. You do not get to die in my arms.”

His voice wasn’t gentle anymore. It cracked through the dark like thunder, thick with an authority that reached past my body and grabbed whatever was still fighting inside me.

He pulled me against his chest and wrapped the cloak fully around me, his warmth slamming into me like a physical blow.

It was too late. My heart had already stopped. The dark took me whole.

Then, deep beneath my ribs, right where my wolf had spent eighteen years locked in the dark, something snapped.

Not a slow waking. An explosion.

Whatever had been poisoning my blood for almost two decades hit some kind of breaking point the second my heart stopped beating. No pulse left to carry it meant no pulse left to control it, and the chain that had been strangling my lineage broke all at once.

Fire tore up from the base of my spine.

I gasped, a violent, tearing breath, and my eyes snapped open.

The scream that came out of me didn’t sound like mine. It sounded old. Wild. Something that had been waiting a long time to be heard.

Under my frostbitten skin, a dark crimson light began to pulse.

It started at my wrists and crept up my arms in thin, branching lines, then surged into my throat, pushing against the ice still locked in my flesh. The snow beneath me didn’t melt, it hissed and turned to steam on contact.

The stranger went rigid. His eyes, gold a second ago, went wide with something closer to disbelief.

He looked down at his own hands, still cupped against my chest, and the tattoos crawling up his arms twisted under his skin like they were straining to reach toward the light coming off of me.

The glow flared brighter, painting the black canopy of the forest red. My hair, whipping in the sudden heat, began catching streaks of molten silver in the moonlight.

The wolf inside me didn’t whimper this time. She stood. And she let out a silent roar that cracked the last of the ice off my skin and sent a shockwave tearing out through the trees around us.

I felt him gasp above me, felt his whole body brace against the force of whatever was waking up inside mine.

“A Blood Alpha,” he whispered, and there was something close to reverence in it. “The lineage lives.”

My chest heaved as life slammed back into me all at once, the crimson light burning away the frost, burning away the weakness, burning away the fragile, useless version of me that had walked into this forest to die ten minutes ago.

But it was moving too fast. Eighteen years of power with nowhere to go, breaking loose all at once in a body that had never been taught how to hold it.

My vision spun as the light kept expanding, swallowing him, the trees, the sky, until there was nothing but red.

The last thing I felt before the dark took me again was his arm locking tighter around my waist, pulling me in against his heart as the ground beneath us started to split.

Then, cutting through the crimson glare, a voice crackled cold and metallic from the radio at his collar:

“Tsar Vaelin, retreat. The blood surge is tearing open the forest’s wards. We have incoming.”
