Alessandro said nothing to Dante that night.

He waited until the guests had gone, the girls were in bed, Elena was asleep, and the villa had settled into its late-night quiet. Then he knocked on the door of Dante’s study and walked in and set the guard’s phone on the desk.

Dante looked at it. Then he looked at Alessandro.

“Tell me,” he said.

Alessandro told him. All of it, the guard, the photographs, the coordinates, the dropped phone, the clean escape. He told it quickly and without softening.

Then he knocked on the door of Dante’s study and walked in and set the guard’s phone on the desk.Dante looked at it. Then he looked at Alessandro.“Tell me,” he said.Alessandro told him. All of it, the guard, the photographs, the coordinates, the dropped phone, the clean escape. He told it quickly and without softening.Dante listened without moving. When Alessandro finished, Dante picked up the guard’s phone and looked at the photographs. He looked at them for a long time.“They targeted my daughters,” he said at last. His voice was very quiet. That particular quiet that people who knew Dante recognized immediately the one that was more dangerous than shouting.“It appears so,” Alessandro said.“At their birthday party.” The phone lowered. “In my home.”“Yes.”A long silence.“Who was the guard?” Dante asked.

The triplets came home to the villa on a Tuesday, and the villa was never quiet again. This was not a complaint.Elena had not realized how silent the estate had felt in all those months of pregnancy — all that peace and protection with nothing to fill it but waiting. Now the halls were full of sound: the particular crying of three distinct babies who already had three distinct cries, the soft padding of nurses’ shoes, the low rumble of Dante on the phone being interrupted mid-sentence by one daughter or another, and the constant gentle argument between the three night nurses about which baby was which.“Sofia has a birthmark,” Elena would tell them patiently. “A small one, behind her right ear.”“And Luna has darker eyebrows,” Dante would add.“And Aria—” They would look at each other. Aria had no distinguishing marks whatsoever. She simply had that look. That particular way of watching everything that made grown adults feel slightly assessed.“We will just know Aria,” Dante decided.

The hospital in Palermo was the best in Sicily.Dante had made certain of that two months ago, quietly, efficiently paying for new equipment, ensuring the best surgical team would be on call, arranging private security for the floor. Dr. Mitchell had told him he was excessive. He had told her he preferred the word thorough. Now he stood outside the operating room, still in his coat, and felt more afraid than he had ever felt in his life.He had faced men with guns. He had survived two assassination attempts. He had built a criminal empire from the ground up while barely out of his twenties and had never once flinched.Right now his hands were shaking.Alessandro arrived at four in the morning, followed by Matteo, then Lorenzo, then Giovanni, and finally Rafael. One by one they filled the corridor outside the operating room, five large, dark-haired men in various states of dishevelment, all of them quiet and tense and waiting.“She is going to be fine,” Alessandro said.“You do not kno

The first thing Elena noticed when she woke up that morning was that she could no longer see her feet. She sat up slowly in bed, her back already aching, and looked down at her belly. It was round and full and enormous, sitting in her lap like a small planet. She was thirty-two weeks pregnant. Eight months. And she felt every single day of it.“Good morning,” said a voice from the doorway.Dante was standing there holding a tray. On it was a cup of warm tea, a plate of plain crackers, a small bowl of sliced fruit, and — because he always remembered — a single yellow flower in a tiny glass of water.“You picked another flower from the garden,” Elena said.“Rosa was angry about it again,” Dante said, walking over carefully and setting the tray on her bedside table. “She said if I keep stealing from her roses, she will quit.”“She has said that eleven times.”“Twelve now.” He sat on the edge of the bed and handed her the tea. “How did you sleep?”“Badly,” Elena admitted. “Sofia kept kick

Sicily - The Next MorningElena stood in the villa's main hall as they brought Isabelle in. The woman who'd caused so much pain, so much suffering, now looked small and defeated. Her platinum blonde hair was disheveled. Her expensive clothes were wrinkled. Her makeup was smeared from crying. She looked up and saw Elena. For a moment, pure hatred blazed in her green eyes. Then Elena rested a hand on her pregnant belly—obvious now at seventeen weeks, unmistakable evidence of the life Isabelle had tried to destroy. And all the fight went out of Isabelle. She slumped in her restraints, looking suddenly ancient despite being only thirty-two."You lost," Elena said quietly. "All your plans. All your manipulation. All your attempts to hurt me. They all failed. The babies are healthy. Dante loves me. My family is safe. And you're going to spend the rest of your life in prison.""I could have given you everything," Isabelle spat. "I could have made Marcus happy. We were perfect together until

  • THE MAFIA’S HIDDEN PRINCESS RETURNS   CHAPTER 53: WHERE IS SHE?

The Scottish Highlands in February were brutal—cold wind, persistent mist, landscape that seemed to go on forever in shades of gray and brown. The helicopter touched down two miles from Robert Thorne's hunting lodge, far enough away that the occupants wouldn't hear the engine.Eight men emerged: Alessandro, Dante, Lorenzo, Giovanni, Rafael, Luca, Cristian, and—staying back as agreed—Marcus Thorne."Remember the objective," Alessandro said as they checked weapons and equipment. "We take Isabelle and Robert alive if possible. But if they threaten anyone or try to escape, we end them. Catherine and David Thorne are to be protected—they're victims in this as much as Elena was."Everyone nodded understanding. They moved through the highland mist like shadows, using the terrain for cover. The lodge appeared gradually through the fog—a large stone building with multiple chimneys, surrounded by bare trees and rocky outcroppings.Perfect for defense. Which meant perfect for an ambush too."Inf
