Massimo's POV

⬤ ─── ⬤ ─── ⬤⬤ ─── ⬤ ─── ⬤

The last few hours have been a roller coaster of emotion for me. It took all of my willpower to break away from her embrace yesterday, and how am I supposed to continue like this? The time after that had me rethinking if this resolve of mine will even stand the test of time.

I am so aware of how close she is even when I try to keep my distance from her. The nurse has informed me she is doing better and her pain h

Elena’s POVThe door won’t open.I pull at the handle, then try again with both hands. It rattles, but nothing happens. Behind me, somebody laughs.“Where do you think you’re going?”I turn. The woman from the auction stands a few feet away. She looks at me as though I have done something amusing.“You said you would help me.”“And I did.”“No.”My voice sounds too small. The woman is coming closer.“You wanted to leave him, didn’t you? Now he is gone. Dead.”“No!” I scream.I reach behind me for the handle again. The room is cold. I don’t remember it being this cold before. Water drips from my hair onto my shoulders, soaking through the coat she gave me. I want to take it off, but I cannot let go of the door.“Please. My aunt will pay you.”“You’ve wasted enough time.”Someone catches my arm from behind.I scream and twist, trying to see who has hold of me. There are men on either side now. One pulls me away from the door while the other catches my legs.“Please don’t take me there.”

  • THE MAFIA'S JEWEL   Chapter 65: The kiss

Massimo’s POVFor a moment, something happens to me that has never happened before.I freeze.I am torn, her warm lips still pressed against mine, her hand trembling slightly at my neck. I have imagined this so often that now it is happening, I can hardly trust myself to move properly. She isn’t mine. She is betrothed. I don’t want to ruin her, not when I won’t be here for long to protect her. The more I recite the words like a mantra, the more my control slips.Just when she begins to draw away, I lift my hand to her cheek and follow her like a nail drawn to a magnet, but i make it slow enough giving her time to turn her face if she wants to. Maybe she will redeem me because I have gone way past the point of redeeming myself. She stays, and that is all I need to sink into the abyss. I press my lips against hers, savouring her taste like a hungry man. I take, trying to hold on to as much control as I can, but I am a starved man, and Elena is my food. The best meal I have ever tasted.

  • THE MAFIA'S JEWEL   Chapter 64: Invitation

Massimo’s POV“Ines is alive?”Elena’s voice reaches me through the door, and I stop trying to make myself comfortable as I press my ear further against the door.Shit.I never told her. I let her continue believing Ines was dead.“No. She can’t be,” I hear her say. There is a long silence, during which I assume her sister is speaking. For the first time, I wish I could hear every word coming from that woman’s mouth.“What did she tell you?”Another pause.“No, Beatriz. That isn’t what happened.”I rest one hand against the wall. I should go back to bed. Elena deserves to finish a conversation without me standing here listening, but I can’t bring myself to stop eavesdropping on this.“I’m not telling you anything about where I am.” There is a resolve in her voice that has not been there since I started listening. My hand stills against the wall.Good girl.“No. You don’t get to speak to me like that and then expect me to tell you everything.”I almost smile, although there is nothing

  • THE MAFIA'S JEWEL   Chapter 63: The Call With Beatrice

Elena’s POVFor a moment, I consider letting the phone ring.Massimo has just told me he loves me. I am still sitting beside him, trying to understand how those words can belong to me, and my sister has somehow chosen this moment to remember I exist.“Who is it?” he asks.“My sister Beatriz.”His expression changes. It is slight, but I notice the way his attention shifts to the phone.“I’m sorry. I have to take this call,” I add. He takes a while to reply.“Okay,” he finally says.Massimo releases my hand.I stand, although leaving him feels wrong after what he has just said. There is so much I want to ask him, and I am frightened that when I return, he will have decided we should pretend it never happened.“I’ll be right outside.”He nods, his gaze remaining on mine until I turn towards the door.I step into the passage.I look down at the screen, my thumb hovering over it. There was a time when seeing her name would have made me happy without any effort. Now I can’t say the same. Ov

  • THE MAFIA'S JEWEL   Chapter 62: The Don's Confession

Elena’s POVThe doctor says something to me, but I barely hear her. I am looking past her at Massimo, waiting for him to explain why I have just heard him refuse something that could keep him alive. He looks at me, then at the doctor.“It’s all right,” he says. No, it isn’t. I am beginning to hate those words. The doctor steps into the passage, drawing the door almost closed behind her.“He needs to rest,” she tells me quietly.I nod because I know that. I know he is ill. I watched him stop breathing, and I have spent every moment since then trying not to imagine it happening again. Apparently, while I was doing that, he had already decided that he wasn’t willing to accept a transplant.“I won’t keep him up,” I say.She studies me for a moment before stepping aside. I enter the room and close the door, keeping my hand on the handle until I trust myself to turn around.Massimo is still watching me.“How much did you hear?”“Enough.”“Elena.”“You’re refusing a transplant?”He shifts ag

  • THE MAFIA'S JEWEL   Chapter 61: A Future Not Promised

Massimo’s POVElena looks at the doctor, then back at me. Her fingers tighten around mine, and I know she is trying to decide whether to argue.“It’s all right,” I tell her.I could ask that she stay, but I don’t know what the doctor is about to say. I don’t want to freak Elena out more than she already is.The doctor waits beside the bed.“I’ll be outside,” Elena says eventually.I nod, but when she gets up, I find myself reluctant to release her hand. Her eyes drop to our fingers, and for a moment, neither of us lets go.Then I loosen my grip.“Ask someone to bring you something to eat.”She gives me a look.“What?” I ask.“You’re lying in that bed, and you’re still telling me to eat.”“One of us should listen to medical advice,” I chuckle. The doctor raises an eyebrow.Elena smiles, then brushes her thumb over my hand before letting go.“I’ll be back.”I watch her leave, listening until the door closes behind her. The room feels different without her in it. I had barely woken up, a
