LILIAN POV

The unsettled thoughts from my discussion with Laurel stayed with me as I walked back to my room. The thought that Laurel possessed a hidden truth persisted in my mind prompting me to uncover what she was concealing. The moment I got onto my bed a powerful determination enveloped me.

I settled into the chair opposite Laurel. "Start explaining. What's going on? You went about your business stealthily before receiving an unexpected package. What's going on?"

Laurel's expression turned resolute. "Nothing's going on, okay? Package delivery is the sole activity I engage in.

I raised an eyebrow. "At this time of night? How can you receive a package at this late hour from someone you refuse to identify? Come on, Laurel. I know you're hiding something."

Laurel's eyes revealed a momentary flash of determination as our gazes met. "I'm telling you, nothing's going on. And I mean it. You will find no deception from me when I speak about this issue.

LILIAN POVWords failed me to respond and I found myself struggling to process what I had just heard. Questions and fears raced through my mind. I walked into the house with purposeful movements while trying to remain absolutely silent. A fall to the floor happened after my feet slipped from the porch step and I failed to reach the entrance."Arrrr!" I screamed, clutching my ankle in pain. The severe damage to my ankle created throbbing pain which grew stronger with each heartbeat. While lying down I detected a voice that sounded both frightened and shocked. "Who's there?" it asked. I recognized the voice as Laurel's. The panicked tone of Laurel's voice made me wonder how she had gotten here.As I was talking, Laurel came toward me. "Oh my god! Are you okay?" she asked, kneeling on the floor by my side. I winced sharply with pain while making an attempt to sit."My ankle," I muttered, trying to explain. Laurel examined my face before she scanned the area to ensure we were not being

LILIAN POV The carpet's cushion softened my steps as I walked toward my room, but my heavy heart remained unsettled. My intuition informed me that Laurel concealed her real identity which generated persistent unease. Our interactions looked normal on the surface yet I detected an underlying disconnect that bothered me deeply. As soon as I walked into my bedroom I fell onto the bed and my eyes wandered hopelessly across the ceiling. The darkness outside my window pushed against me with oppressive force as I remained trapped inside an overwhelming space. Continuous tossing and turning consumed my night as an unending stream of doubts and questions invaded my mind. Who was Laurel, really? Why did she need to be present in this location? My instincts became increasingly alarmed as I continued to ponder over the situation. As I scrolled through my phone to distract myself I found that none of the faces or news headlines held any significance. Her smile stayed in my thoughts along wit

DREW.Laurel smiled, already digging into her food. "Oh, yes! She expressed her intense love for it while her eyes sparkled with joy.My mom and I exchanged a significant glance. Both of us knew Laurel had never liked gumbo. She often made humorous comments about how much she detested the food. This sudden change in preference seemed...off. I assumed she developed a sudden fondness for it to dismiss my suspicions. My mom's doubtful expression showed that she found my words unbelievable. The only sounds during our meal came from spoons hitting bowls as complete silence prevailed.During our shared meal I began to wonder about the other changes Laurel might be experiencing. What I observed seemed like either a passing state or a sign of a deeper problem. My mom's doubtful expression mirrored my own thoughts perfectly. As Laurel started cleaning the dishes we finished our meal together my mom came toward me wearing a grave expression. Laurel gives me an uneasy feeling she revealed in a

DREW.The office was alive with movement as computers emitted a continuous hum while staff talked quietly amongst themselves. Before reaching the house I noticed my mom's parked car in the driveway. I walked towards the front door after stepping out of my car. Motivational posters and company logos decorated the walls to inject professionalism into the office space. While sitting at my desk I experienced heightened concentration and work efficiency. The computer screen emitted light at my desk displaying multiple spreadsheets and reports that required my review. The office buzzed with collective work efforts while I focused on my busy project. The office was my workspace while I stared at my computer screen without focus trying to concentrate on my pending project. Suddenly, my phone rang, breaking the silence. I answered the phone because I hoped it would only take a minute. It was my mom. "Hey, sweetie! "I'm at home where I wanted to see you," she explained with an upbeat voice. "

NINA.Within my bedroom I paced back and forth while my thoughts were completely focused on Drew and our chaotic relationship. Even though I'm not who I once was and I've made errors along the way, why doesn't Drew recognize my efforts? Can't he accept me wholeheartedly? I told myself that I am a good person while attempting to dispel my own uncertainties. "I'm not Laurel. I've changed. I've grown." The voice inside my mind persisted with its interrogation. "Have you really? Is your behavior just a facade of who you truly are? After I stopped pacing I looked at my reflection in the mirror. "I'm trying, okay?" I said, my voice rising in frustration. "I'm doing the best I can. Can't that be enough for Drew?" With each step I took I remembered all the occasions when Drew had caused me pain along with all the times he had shown disbelief in me. "Why can't he just trust me?" I wondered. What makes him unable to acknowledge my attempts to improve myself?I took a deep breath to regain m

DREW.My heart raced with mixed emotions as I walked back to my room. "Can Lauren really change?" Hope started to flicker within me as I asked myself that question. I settled onto my bed and focused on the ceiling while attempting to settle my fast-moving thoughts. But my peace was short-lived. Laughter mixed with conversation flowed out from Morel's room. Lauren and Morel talked together while they shared joyful giggles and their voices rang with warmth. I let my curiosity take control and moved to Morel's room to investigate quietly.I heard Lauren reading a story to Morel with a soft gentle voice as I reached the door. "The dragon breathed fire that lit up the night sky," she explained with an excited voice. Morel laughed while he asked questions that Lauren answered with patience and kindness. Through the doorway I watched Lauren place Morel in bed while her face displayed a gentle smile."Goodnight, sweetie," Lauren said, kissing Morel's forehead. "Sleep tight." His eyes shone w

NINA.I maintained my composed tone while describing the situation to Bryan. The company's potential sale did not receive unanimous approval from his family members. A number of family members oppose the company sale and are prepared to battle to safeguard the company's heritage. The company represents their father's dedication and hard work according to these family members who view it as more than a mere financial asset. The bitterness in Bryan's voice revealed his deep anger and frustration. "Those ingrates," he muttered. "They don't know what's good for them. The proceeds from this sale would have provided substantial financial benefits to all parties involved. The proceeds would have provided us with comfortable living while setting them up for life.I pressed on, undeterred. My responsibility as their lawyer requires me to advise them about their best possible options. We must investigate every possible avenue to block the sale of the company right now. We need to challenge the

  • THE OTHER SHE   CHAPTER 039

NINA The setting sun bathed the familiar facade in golden light as we arrived at the house and relief washed over me. As the lengthy workday ended I looked forward to releasing the burden of my duties so I could exist freely. I shut off the engine while the cooling metal emitted a soft ticking sound which signaled the upcoming silence. Our exit from the car was marked by the doors shutting with a soft thud which resonated through the quiet evening atmosphere. Finally, we got to the house. The cool air-conditioned space welcomed me as my voice echoed "Honey, I'm back." The familiar sound of floorboards creaking under my feet always created a sense of warmth and welcome for me. The door shut behind me with a gentle click of the latch which assured me of my safety and the comfort of being home.Drew responded with "Yea, my love," his voice carried from the living room where the television light illuminated his face warmly. A smile spread across my face as I felt contentment washing ov
