After Marian had gone into her dorm, leaving Dorien alone outside, Dorien had gone off alone to let off some steam.

He knew his father had gone to see Reyland.

He could not face his Luna, Risa, at that moment, not with where his head and heart were at. So, she had not been an option.

Not even for the calming techniques he was supposed to be learning from her – not that they ever actually did what they were supposed to be doing during those sessions.

He had never regretted mixing pleasure with his meditations, until most recently.

He could feel the strain within him, but was losing the battle of control, every day.

He knew it.

He could sense it.

But he was slowly, steadily going past the point of caring.

He had not wanted anyone telling him to calm down, which was what Beta Brock would say, and he really couldn’t stand to see, let alone hear, Alpha Corien’s or Luna Diane’s neutral or positive reass

“I mean, what do you call a girl who jumps from one guy to the next without so much as batting an eyelash?” Dorien continued calmly, with no break in his tone.“And brother’s no less, I mean, fine, maybe she’s not a whore, but she definitely is a homewrecker, of some sort, at the very least.”The door flung open.Dorien was wearing a smug smile, with a brow raised, to greet his brother. His eyes took in the person standing before him.Instantly, Dorien paled. He staggered backward.Reyland blinked, his own face going from red to grey, then green. His large hands began to shake, then he started to fidget, his fingers running against each other as he glanced away from his little brother.Reyland closed his eyes, cursing under his breath.Dorien’s mouth fell open. Finally, the Noble Alpha found his voice.“What. The. Hell?” Dorien rasped.&ldq

Now, Dorien was standing in Reyland’s pantry. Their father had just left. The Noble Alpha had heard the conversation between Alpha Dax and Reyland; from the moment their father had woken up.Dorien’s mind was on fire. His heart was racing. His palms were sweaty.Nothing in the discussion, or the tone of it, had suggested that their father would support his view of taking Marian for himself. The way Alpha Dax had called Marian ‘child’, ‘little girl’, the fact that he had even told his brother about her oath, and had listed her among those he said would protect Reyland, had shaken Dorien, one by one.Still, Reyland…Dorien had seethed in his mind as his father had spoken to his brother.Always, Reyland. He had raged internally as his father left the house.Would Father give Marian to me if I asked? If I demanded? Would he do

After a moment, as Dinka ran, Marian spoke again.“Why did you go there, D.?” Marian asked gently.Marian knew why, of course, but the prospect of seeing Dax or Bentax should have been more dissuasive than the need to get near Reyland; she did not understand why her wolf had taken such a risk to go so close to Reyland’s home.Dinka did not respond.Marian waited.Dinka stopped and sniffed the air.Something was off. They were at the very edge of their territory. A lesser-used area. There were guards all around the Lightmoon territory, but today was a special day, and things could be overlooked, especially such distant, barely used areas.Dinka stilled herself as her hackles rose. A deep growl started in her chest. In seconds, three shifters, in wolf mode, appeared behind Dinka. She continued to growl as they drew closer, two on her left, one on her right. Her new power had cast her

“If I say I will protect you, have you grown so bold as to accuse me of lying?” Dax retorted quietly, his steady gaze holding his son’s nervous one.“If you fight him –” Reyland pushed back urgently.“Who said anything about fighting?” Dax cut in again. He placed his second hand on Reyland’s other shoulder and turned the large man to face him.“I will protect you. This pack, will protect you. Your brother, will protect you. That…she-wolf, will protect you,” Dax continued.Reyland’s lips parted as his eyes widened.“Do you know that she offered an oath for you?” Dax continued flatly before Reyland could interject.Reyland gasped. He made to step back, but his father held him in place.Dax stared at him, nodding slowly.“She asked my leave to bind her life to yours,” Dax stated dryly.“Fa–” Reyland breathed, shaking his head as his father continued to nod.“She said she would give her life for you,” Dax drone

Dax found the young heir in the house, specifically, in the kitchen. Thanks to Dorien blocking his mind and presence, Dax could not sense the young wolf’s state. However, he knew his son’s temperament.Once he saw his brother, things would happen. He knew his sons were close.Where Dorien was peevish, Reyland was mature. He knew his firstborn could handle his younger brother, but Reyland was not the problem.Dorien was the issue. He was explosive.Dax’s mind wandered as he considered his next move. His pack was being tested, but his family was under immediate threat. His older sons were at risk, and neither one was young enough for him to control with words. He needed to be careful.==========Dax had never really bonded with his children. He was not an involved parent.Corien was probably more of a father to both his younger sons than he, their blood-related father, was.He couldn&
