Chapter One Hundred and Twenty-Four

Tristan's POV

It gets harder with every passing day.

Showing up at the hospital is no longer a decision I have to make each morning. It's become part of my routine, as necessary as breathing, and I can't imagine starting my day any other way.

I promised Andrea I'd stay by her side, and I've kept that promise through every examination, every change in her medical reports, and every update the doctors have given me.

I was here when they finally moved her out o

  • THE PRICE OF BEING HIS    Finale: The life we chose

Andrea’s POVI used to think the hardest part of becoming a mother would be getting pregnant.I was wrong. The hardest part was carrying our babies while fighting for my own life. After that night at the hospital, my pregnancy became a series of hospital visits, blood pressure checks, medication, and long stretches of waiting for the doctors to tell us that everything was still okay. Some weeks, I spent more time in a hospital bed than I did at home. Every time my blood pressure rose, I watched Tristan's face tighten with worry, even when he tried to hide it from me.He never left me to face any of it alone. He rearranged his work around my appointments, learned every medication I was prescribed, and somehow became more familiar with my doctors than some of the hospital staff. On the days I was too tired to talk, he sat beside me and held my hand. On the days fear got the better of me, he reminded me that we were going to take things one day at a time.Sometimes, I wondered how he m

Chapter One Hundred and Fifty-TwoAndrea’s POVTears gather in my eyes before I can stop them.“Are you sure?” I ask, staring at the technician. “Please, are you absolutely sure?”She smiles gently. “Yes, Mrs. Hale.”“But could it be something else?” My eyes dart back to the screen. “A mass or something that looks like a pregnancy? We've had problems before, and I just… I need to be sure.”I know how ridiculous I sound, but I can't help it. I've spent years hoping for this moment, only to watch every hope fall apart. How am I supposed to believe that it's finally happening? The technician lets out a soft laugh. “No, it's not a mass. I'm very sure about what I'm seeing. You're pregnant, and there are two babies in there. You should be happy, Mrs. Hale. Congratulations once again.”Two babies.I stare at the screen, but I can barely make sense of anything on it. There are two of them. Two little lives growing inside me, while I've been busy convincing myself that my body would never giv

  • THE PRICE OF BEING HIS    The unexpected answer

Chapter One Hundred and Fifty-OneAndrea’s POVMany months laterI've become very good at keeping myself busy.Work has practically become my second home. Between meetings, client calls, and the endless decisions that come with running a business, I barely have time to sit still. For a while, it's been working. But not at nights. When the house falls quiet and there's nothing left to distract me, the questions return. Why hasn't it happened for us? How much longer are we supposed to wait? Will I ever get to hold my own baby and know that I carried them inside me?We've also proceeded with the adoption process, but we're still on the waiting list. Even with Tristan using his connections to help us navigate the process, there's only so much we can do. We have to wait for the right placement, and every update that leads nowhere leaves me feeling a little more helpless.I've tried to accept that our path to becoming parents might look different from what I imagined. Some days, I even co

  • THE PRICE OF BEING HIS    Never forget that I love you

Chapter One Hundred and FiftyAndrea’s POVTristan leans down and kisses me. It starts gently, with the same tenderness he showed me while holding me as I cried, but it doesn't stay that way for long. His kisses grow more urgent, as though he's trying to pour every apology and promise into them. I respond without thinking, my hands sliding up his chest and around his neck as I pull him closer. He shifts over me, his body pressing me into the mattress. One hand finds the hem of my nightgown and slowly pushes it up my thigh. When his fingers brush the edge of my underwear, I break the kiss just long enough to look at him.“Are you sure?” I ask, my voice quieter now. “After everything we just said…”“I’ve never been more sure of anything,” he answers, and the way he looks at me leaves no room for doubt. He helps me out of my nightgown, and I do the same for him, unbuttoning his shirt with slightly shaky fingers before pushing it off his shoulders. By the time we’re both bare, the tension

Chapter One Hundred and Forty-NineAndrea’s POV“Yes, but hear me out first, Andrea.” He steps closer. “I wanted to surprise you once I had more information. I've spoken to someone who could guide us through the process, but there haven't been any suitable newborn placements available so far. I didn't want to get your hopes up before I knew what was possible.”For a moment, I don't know what to say. I can hardly believe what I'm hearing.“You've been making plans to adopt a baby without telling me?”“I was trying to find another way for us to become parents.”“But I don't want to adopt, Tristan.”His eyebrows draw together. “Why not?”“Because I want to experience pregnancy. I want to feel my baby move inside me. I want to go through those months knowing that there's a little life growing inside my body. I want to give birth, hold my child against my chest, and know that I carried them.”My voice breaks, and I hate that it does.“Is that so terrible?”“No, Andrea. Of course it isn't.”

  • THE PRICE OF BEING HIS    Another way to be a mother

Chapter One Hundred and Forty-EightAndrea’s POVThe first thing I notice when I open my eyes is the empty space beside me.The second is Tristan standing in front of the mirror, already dressed for work, adjusting his tie.I sit up slowly, letting out a yawn as I push my hair away from my face. My eyes feel heavy from the restless night I had, and for a moment, I simply watch him, wishing I could crawl back beneath the covers and sleep until I no longer have to think about anything. But sleep hasn't been much of a friend lately. Even when I manage to close my eyes, my thoughts always find a way to drag me back to the same place, reminding me of what I want so badly and what my body has so far failed to give me.He catches my reflection in the mirror and turns."You're up, wifey." He smiles gently. "Good morning.""Morning." I rub my eyes. "Were you planning to sneak off without saying goodbye?""I didn't want to wake you. You had trouble sleeping last night." He glances at his watch,
