THE ESCAPE

Catherine lay still on the bare ground with her eyes shut, her breathing had become stable and the wolf's bane had finally worn off completely. Gradually she opened her eyes and looked ahead although she could not see anything. She trailed her hands on the ground as she headed for the door blindly.

The door had a little open patch on it where the tiny ray of light oozed from outside. Here, she put one eye as she looked through to see if anyone was around the door.

She studied the environment for a while counting every second that someone passed by, identifying the person from their footwear. She knew that the guards had uniformed boots and the non-guards had fancy leather shoes, some had flowing robes that covered their shoes. At the brisk of dusk, the maid would bring in her dinner, Catherine knew this and so she laid back on the floor with her eyes shut as if she was still in the influence of the wolf's bane.
