CATALINA

The late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the living room as I felt Chen's forehead again. It was still too warm, and he was too weak. My heart clenched with that familiar maternal worry at his silent struggles.

I decided to continue Chen's treatment at home with Dante's personal doctor and nurse to monitor him every day. His fever hasn't subsided, and he remains weak and quiet.

I want him to talk. To talk about the person he was with when he was missing. But I can't just force him to speak. I need him to regain his strength for the sake of his mental health.

"Still feeling hot, little man?" I murmured to him.

He just blinked up at me. His squinted, brown eyes were glassy and unfocused. When a shiver ran through his small frame, I immediately pulled the blanket up to his neck.

He didn't complain. He didn't fuss. He just leaned his head into my hand, a silent, heartbreaking plea for comfort.

Was it always like this when he was sick? The inability to hear his voice, to a

CATALINAThis visit was going to be a special kind of hell. As I stepped out of the car, the dry heat hit me like a slap, a stark contrast to the humid embrace of New York. Every fiber of my being screamed at me to turn around, to get back on that plane, and to pretend this whole dreadful trip was a bad choice. I can't believe I'm here just to meet the woman I despise more than anyone on earth. And now, I am here, in her territory, a lion walking into the snakes’ den.I clutched the five-page document, letting the paper dig into my palms. This wasn't a visit. It was a ceasefire, a tense, uneasy truce, and I had no idea what to expect. All I knew was that a few hours from now, everything would be different between us.Taking a deep breath, I pressed the doorbell. The silence was deafening, broken only by the chirping of crickets. The front door creaked open. There she was, Fiona Gomez. She hadn't changed much, still with that regal air and baby bump hidden behind the floral dress th

CATALINA“I wish I had heard him saying my name.”I brushed my fingers through his silky black hair while imagining what his cute and tiny voice might sound like. His soft snoring was the cutest thing I've heard since the disaster came lately. It soothes my worries and warms my heart.Behind me, I heard a familiar voice, obviously with guilt. "I am so, so sorry, Ma'am," Abby mumbled as her gaze lowered to the floor. "I just... I don't know what happened."I turned, my gaze stern and full of fury. Abby, usually so composed and vigilant, looked utterly devastated. Her eyes, usually sharp and alert, were now filled with desperate remorse. I wanted to scream, to unleash all the terror and fury that had been churning inside me for the past few hours. How could she have let this happen? How could she lose a child? But then I looked at Chen again, peacefully in his sleep, and a wave of exhaustion washed over me. What was the point? The damage was done. Chen was safe, and that's all that ma

CATALINA"Get me to the hospital now!" I yelled at my driver. My voice cracked with a fear I hadn't felt since I lost my child. A suffocating wave of panic ran through my chest, thinking of the possibilities of why Chen had gone missing. Did he look for Abby? Did he miss the way back to his room? Or… Did someone take him?!I wish I had prioritized him first. I wish I had visited him first before I dealt with the company's problem.Abby's words echoed in my head, choked with apologies that shattered my world. My heart hammered against my chest, with horror in my mind. What if he was scared? What if he was hurt? Chen was so small, so vulnerable. The city, usually a symbol of my triumphs, now loomed as a dangerous maze for Chen. I tightened my grip on my phone, waiting for it to ring again, waiting for the good news from Abby. But no phone calls arrived until I arrived at the hospital. That only means one thing: they couldn't find him. Those thoughts killed me a million times. As I

CATALINAThe humid Manhattan air immediately rushed against my skin as I exited the black car. My heels made a familiar sound on the pavement that usually brought a sense of power and purpose. But today, it just felt heavy. I looked up at the skeletal remains of the building, a monument to countless hours of planning, investment, and ambition. It was now a gaping wound in the sky, a testament to the unpredictable nature of things."Mrs. Marcellos," Christine, my head of operations, rushed to meet me with her grim face. "We've got the initial reports, but it's still chaotic."I just nodded as my gaze was still fixed on the poor building. The scent of smoke was faint but persistent, still hanging in the air, a little reminder of the sudden disaster. This wasn't just a building. It was years of my father's life, the embodiment of my vision, but now it was gone up in flames. The thought sent a jolt of ice through me, but I pushed it down. There would be time for that later.“What really

CATALINAI felt an arm draped across my waist, pulling me close against his chest. Dante selfishly claimed me, and I, myself, drew in his warmth. My eyes squinted against the morning light peeking through the curtains as my phone vibrated relentlessly on the bedside table.I reached for my phone near the nightstand and answered the call.“Hello?" My voice awoke with a lazy hush."Catalina." It's Mr. Langley. Compared to my unkempt wake-up, his voice was as clear and well-articulated as ever.A groan was on the verge of escaping me. Mr. Langley never called this early unless it was urgent and "urgent" usually meant "a complex, multi-layered problem that will consume your entire day." I sighed, already mentally preparing to hear the bad news. But I couldn't move. Not with his arm draped across my waist, heavy with sleep-induced possessiveness. I glanced at Dante. His lashes faint against his cheek, his breath steady and unbothered. I moved lightly, testing the firmness of his hold, bu
