CHAPTER 37: HOPING AGAINST HOPE

VENUS:

Jenna rested her elbows on her knees as I gazed into her eyes expectantly. "Well, for starters, no female in this pack can give the Alpha an heir.”

“Really? Why?”

“The alpha executed a certain witch here in this pack many years ago and she cursed the alpha before she took her last breath.”

I stared at her, dumbfounded. “Why are you telling me that? Do you want to get into trouble? The last time Mira revealed a secret to me, she was flogged in public like a criminal. I still shiver when I remember how she was tied to pole while the whip tore through her skin.”

“This isn't a secret. Everyone in this pack knows about it,” she responded nonchalantly.

“Are you sure?” I didn't want Jenna going through what Mira went through for my sake. It made me feel guilty for days.

“I'm sure,” she responded with a nod.

“Wow! No wonder he had to choose a human. But he could have gotten another she-wolf from another pack. Probably an Alpha's daughter.”

  • THE RUTHLESS ALPHA'S HUMAN SURROGATE    DO YOU WANT TO LIVE?

CHAPTER 39: DO YOU WANT TO LIVE?VENUS:The next morning, I woke up at 4:am as expected and headed to the mansion. In addition to cleaning the mansion, I still had to be at Olivia's beck and call.By the time I scrubbed the last corner of the massive hallway, the sun was already dipping low in the sky. My arms ached, my knees were sore, and I could barely feel my fingers. My stomach hadn’t stopped growling since morning, but not a single soul had bothered to offer me even a glass of water.Still, I pressed on.The last thing I needed was for Olivia to come storming in, screeching about a missed spot on a windowpane or a speck of dust on her favorite chair. She had spent the whole morning barking orders at me like I was a dog. I had washed her clothes, arranged her shoes, cleaned her room twice, and even reorganized her makeup drawer because she "didn't like how the blush was staring at her."By 4:00 PM, after twelve hours of hard labour, I was ready to collapse.I heaved a sigh and

CHAPTER 38: OLIVIA'S SERVANT VENUS:I left Jenna in my room and headed to the kitchen. My stomach rumbled again, loudear this time as if it was urging me to move faster. So I walked faster, wondering why Maxine decided I deserved to eat. He must have gone through the drive and found the contents very useful. I smiled and turned to the hallway that led to the kitchen. After two days of no food, I’ve come to appreciate the luxury I had enjoyed within the few weeks I've stayed in Silver Moon pack. I needed to eat—desperately. Before I got to the kitchen, I could already percieve the smell of warm bread, roasted meat, and spices. My mouth watered as I stepped inside, taking a moment to inhale. I didn’t see Olivia coming. She rounded the corner like she owned the entire mansion, holding a cup of juice. She walked with that exaggerated sway in her hips, probably thinking every eye was glued to her. We bumped into each other hard. Her drink sloshed all over her dress and splattered ont

  • THE RUTHLESS ALPHA'S HUMAN SURROGATE    DON'T MAKE STUPID ASSUMPTIONS

CHAPTER 36: DON'T MAKE STUPID ASSUMPTIONS VENUS:Maxine chased me out of his office like a dog even after I had handed him an information that could save his pack and company. How ungrateful can someone be?Sigh. It's a terrible life when you don't have a family to fall back on. Otherwise, I won't be here, facing the cruelty of a ruthless Alpha.I hurried back toward my tiny room and didn’t stop until I reached the hallway that led to the servants’ quarters. My heart was pounding for reasons I couldn’t name, and my wrist tingled where he had held me. I rubbed it roughly, as if I could erase the feeling.Just as I turned into the narrow corridor that led to my tiny room, a low, breathy moan halted me. I froze, frowning. Another moan followed, and it came louder this time. I tilted my head and heard the unmistakable rhythm of bodies slapping together, followed by a high-pitched whimper. My face scrunched in disbelief. This room belonged to Mira.I was so curious and couldn't help but m

  • THE RUTHLESS ALPHA'S HUMAN SURROGATE    THAT'S WHAT YOU DESERVE

CHAPTER 35: THAT'S WHAT YOU DESERVE MAXINE:The second I let go of Venus, watching her fall to the floor coughing and clutching her throat, something twisted in my chest. I didn't feel guilty for choking her but my wolf was restless, growling in my head. No one has ever stood up to me the way Venus has done. That girl has got fire. I was Alpha yet she snapped at me like I was a nobody. I had to do what needed to be done to maintain order. But the look in her eyes...Damn it."You have thirty minutes," I told her, my voice as sharp as it could get, and devoid of emotion. "Bring the flash drive to my office or you won't like what happens next."Her gaze narrowed, but she didn’t argue. I slammed the door behind me before I could second-guess myself.By the time I got to my office, I was pacing like a caged beast. My wolf was restless. Agitated. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw her face. Her eyes. Her defiance. The way she dared to challenge me, even when she was at her weakest. Most

  • THE RUTHLESS ALPHA'S HUMAN SURROGATE    WHERE'S THE FLASH DRIVE?

CHAPTER 34: WHERE'S THE FLASH DRIVE?VENUS:I hid in a corner and waited until those men in black suits were out of sight before I took off and ran back to the pack house. It was a long distance yet I ran all the way home. I was panting by the time I got back.“Venus, where have you been?”It was Mira and I didn't bother to answer her. I was still upset with her for telling on me. I know she denied doing it but who else could have told Maxine? Mira was the only person who knew about the contraceptive in the pack. I just ignored her as she picked some eggs from the poultry at the back of the pack house.I didn't bother going back to the mansion. Working for two straight days without food was pure cruelty and I was too weak to continue. I know I had been offered a bar of chocolate and some water at the cyber cafe but it wasn't nearly enough.Besides, I needed to rest after all the walking I had done today.I headed straight to the maids quarters and pushed open the creaky wooden door

  • THE RUTHLESS ALPHA'S HUMAN SURROGATE    THE FLASH DRIVE

CHAPTER 33: THE FLASH DRIVE VENUS:I woke up at 4:am the following morning as Clara had instructed and headed to the alpha mansion. My night had been filled with nightmares of Maxine trying to kill me. And I woke up feeling totally exhausted. Yet I had to clean the entire two storey mansion.I worked all day, cleaning the ceilings and the rails, scrubbing the marble floors, arranging the books in the library according to their sizes and so many other chores that drained me of my strength. Yet no one offered me a morsel of bread. At the end of the day, I went to bed hungry.Today was my second day scrubbing floors and polishing stair rails without a single morsel of food.My stomach growled again, and it was louder this time. It was a painful reminder that I hadn't eaten in almost two days. “Ma, please can I have something to eat,” I had said to Clara around noon. But she just waved me off.“No one can give you food unless Alpha Maxine approves it, and since he had gone on a trip, I

  • THE RUTHLESS ALPHA'S HUMAN SURROGATE    SOUNDS LIKE YOUR WOLF LIKES HER

CHAPTER 32: SOUNDS LIKE YOUR WOLF LIKES HER MAXINE:I leaned back in the leather seat of the guest suite offered to me in Alpha Grayson’s mansion, and tapped my fingers against the armrest as I stared at nothing in particular. The fireplace crackled to my right, making the room warm and cosy, but I couldn’t focus on anything except the dull ache in my chest. My wolf had been pacing since last night—restless, growling, angry, and confused.Venus.Her name rang in my head like a war drum.I’d been replaying the moment in the hallway over and over again—how she’d looked when she stepped out of Olivia’s room. Her face was taut with fury, her body rigid, eyes flashing with a wild light I hadn’t seen in her before. And then she bumped into me—literally—and didn’t cower. That girl had fire. She should’ve crumbled by now.She should’ve begged again, tried to manipulate me. Instead, she stood up to Olivia and left without saying a word to me. The fire in her blood... damn it, it pulled at s

  • THE RUTHLESS ALPHA'S HUMAN SURROGATE    I TAKE ORDERS FROM THE ALPHA NOT YOU

CHAPTER 31: I TAKE ORDERS FROM THE ALPHA NOT YOUVENUS:Jenna and I sat on some stools in the common room, and started to talk. I was just trying to make a new friend since Mira, the only person I had considered a friend in this pack, betrayed me.Clara, the middle aged woman who had shown me to my new room earlier, came back and told me I was wanted at Olivia's room.Clara was Gamma's mate and oversaw everything that has to do with the maids."Venus," she said curtly, arms folded over her chest. "You're wanted upstairs. In Olivia's room."Of course.I knew this was coming. Olivia wouldn’t wait long. Not with the power she suddenly had and the spotlight she had stolen. I had been dethroned and exiled from the Alpha's mansion. And Olivia had stepped right into my old shoes. Now she felt it was time to crush me under her heel.Still, I forced a nod. "Okay. Thank you, ma’am."Jenna looked up from where she sat, her brow creased with concern. "You okay?"I gave her a tired smile, and nod
