Chapter 03.
A NEW REVELATION. Clary's POV. “Look, I don't understand what you're trying to say.” I said, pacing back and forth in short spans before finally coming to a stop. “What do you mean by they knew? What did they know? And who are we talking about here?” “The red moon only appears once every three months.” he said, looking me in the eyes. “However, a year was enough time for Eric to become the alpha. The previous alpha is dead.” “Alright, but you still aren't making any sense.” I said, shaking my head. “If he is the alpha now, then that's because he was the acting-alpha before I was sent away. So, it is only right that he is the alpha now.” If anything, I didn't know why he was taking too long to talk. I mean, if he had something to say, then why not say it already? I don't want to believe that he travelled or better still, lived in hiding for the past five years only to come here without anything to say. If he didn't have anything to do, then I could just offer him a place to pass the night. However, for someone like me who's got a lot of things to think of, I don't think talking about what happened in the pack is the best way I want to spend my night. “Eric isn't supposed to be the alpha.” he said, shaking his head. “I know it's hard to believe, but he's not the right person to lead the pack.” “Ok, why are you telling me this?” I asked, with a shrug of my shoulder. “If he isn't the right person to lead the pack, then they should find the right person to do so. How's that any of my concern? I'm about to be thrown out of this place by the weekend, I've got a test tomorrow and I haven't even read a thing yet. So, if they want to find the right person to lead the pack, then they should. I mean, they have you or had you. Anyway, it shouldn't be hard.” “You don't seem to understand.” “Because you're making it difficult for me to understand.” I said, my voice almost rising to a scream. “I mean, you've been talking for the past twenty minutes and I still don't have any idea where this conversation is heading to, and you want me to sit here with you. To talk about what exactly? A pack that sent me out here to die? No, I'm sorry. I've got other things to do.” I righted myself from the couch and turned to leave. However, I wasn't heading to my room to sleep, but to read. If anything, I'd been warned not to fail that particular course. And if it happens that I do, then it's over. I'd have to kiss my hopes of graduating with an 'A' goodbye, which I didn't want and wasn't ready to do. “There was a prophecy.” he said, just as I was about to take a step from where I stood. “Eric and the elders know about it. However, they've decided to keep it a secret.” “What prophecy?” I asked, turning to face him with a raised brow. “And why have they chosen to keep it a secret?” “There was a curse placed on the pack centuries ago.” he said, exhaling softly as if it was an information he wasn't meant to disclose. “Alright, I know about it.” I said, angling my body towards him as I offered my attention. “However, isn't that just a mere legend?” “No, it's not.” he said, righting himself from the couch. “We weren't made to live like this, Clary; that curse stops us from transforming on a full moon. However, it's that period of time when we're supposed to tap into our full power.” “Alright.” I said, folding my arms across my chest as I shifted my body weight to one foot. “I still don't understand how this has to do with me.” “The prophecy says that the one who possesses the black blood will break the curse.” he said, his voice soft, yet certain. “However, Eric doesn't have the black blood.” “Then you all should find the whoever has the black blood to break the curse.” I said, seeing no reason why he made it sound like a big deal. “It is not difficult you know? Find whoever has the black blood and let them break the curse. Simple!” “Don't you get it?” he asked, taking a step towards me. “Why do you think I'm here?” “That's exactly what I've been planning to—” The rest of the words died in my throat as a thought struck me like a bolt of lightning. “No. There's no way that's possible.” I said, shaking my head as I blinked my eyes rapidly in confusion. “You don't think I have the black blood, do you?” “Well, there's only one way to know.” he said, with a shrug of his shoulder. “Aren't you curious?” “Look, I know you're desperate to save the pack. But, it doesn't make any sense.” I said, shaking my head. “I think you've got the wrong person.” “Aren't you concerned about your family?” he asked, staring into my eyes as he took another step toward me. “The red moon is the day after tomorrow. Should Eric perform that ritual, then it's going to get us all killed.” “Are you saying that now so I will go back with you?” I asked, narrowing my gaze at the words. “If that's what you're trying to do, then it's not going to be possible. I'm not going back to that pack that threw me out like I meant nothing.” “I think we should first confirm if you have the blood or not.” he said, picking up the knife from the table. “That should be able to convince you that I'm right.” “And what if you're wrong?” I asked, dropping my gaze to the knife in his grip. “Then I'll leave and never return.” he said, with an assuring nod of his head. “You have my word. However, if it turns out that I'm right, then I'll need you to think about returning to the pack.” “Alright then, let's see.” I said, holding out a hand towards him. “Don't say that I didn't tell you.” “Let's see then.” he said, holding my hand. “This is going to hurt.” He didn't have to tell me that it would hurt. All I wanted was for him to get it over with and leave. Meanwhile, as he cut my skin with the blade, I turned my face away. “You can take a look now.” he said, letting go of my hand. I guess he realized that he was wrong after all. I turned and glanced at my hand. However, my skin crawled as I saw a black substance dripping from my hand. “No, this isn't real.” I said, lifting my gaze to him. “What have you done to me?” “I have only proven that you were wrong.” he said, dropping the knife on the table. “I am sure you know the truth now. Think about it.” “There is nothing to think about.” I said, with an edge to my voice. “You may be right, but this doesn't change anything. I'm not returning to that pack.” “Then we all are going to die.” he said, with ice in his voice. “Including you.”Chapter 30.THIS IS ALL I REMEMBER.Clary's POV.Huddled around a corner, I held my head in my hands and sobbed quietly. I'd been trying to wrap my head around her words — whoever it was that pretended to be Hayley. But it just didn't make any sense. No matter how hard I tried to make something out of it, it just wasn't working. What could she have meant by nothing out of the ordinary had happened to Hayley? Swallowing the lump in my throat, I wiped my face with the back of my hand as I tried to pull myself together. I'd been waiting, but still there was no sign of the real Hayley. Suddenly, I heard a soft groan. “Hayley, is that you?” I asked, my body vibrating to the thump of my heart as I raked my eyes all over the place. “Please, tell me that you're fine.” I swallowed hard and got on my feet then I moved closer to the barrier to search the other cell for her. However, there was still no sign of her.“Please, give me a sign, anything at all.” I said, barely breathing the words
Chapter 29.A BARGAIN.Clary's POV.“Where is she?” I asked, my voice matching the hardness of my gaze. “And what have you done to her?” “Easy there, alright? Easy.” Hayley said, with a smile. “Your friend is doing just fine.” “Then where is she!” I yelled, shaking the barrier by gripping the iron bars. “Tell me where she is else I'm going to bring down this barrier and rip you apart.” “Can you really do that?” she asked, with a bubble of laughter rising in her throat. “I don't think you can. It would take you to fully transform in order to give it a shot.” “Will you just shut up already!” I yelled, as a flash of amber lighted my eyes. “Not another word from you. If you say a word, then I'm going to prove you wrong by bringing down this barrier.” “Very well then, be my guest.” she said, and gestured like an opera singer who'd just finished performing. “I await to see what you can do.” I should have known. But then, there was no way I would have known that it wasn't Hayley to beg
Chapter 28.THE BITTER TRUTH.Clary's POV.“You are kidding right?” I asked, blinking back tears. “Tell me this is a joke, please. They didn't do all that to you, did they?” “Can you see a smile on my face right now?” she asked, her face unreadable. “I just explained to you what would happen if you choose not to give them what they want, and you are asking me to tell you that it's a joke. Seriously? How long do you think you can endure the pain? An hour? Or perhaps two? Well, let me enlighten you, you're going to break sooner or later.” My spine stiffened at her words. From the way she sounded, it seemed like she'd been broken. And if not, then she was just this close to being broken.“How could they do that to you?” I asked, as my throat tightened with tears. “It just doesn't make any sense.” “Of course, it doesn't.” she said, glancing at the cut on her wrist. “But it will when they eventually do the same to you.” “No, they won't do that to me.” I shuddered, my eyes burning with
Chapter 27.WE ARE DIFFERENT.Clary's POV.“You don't want to do this Clary.” Hayley said, with a broken voice as she shook her head. “Just tell them already. Tell them what you know.”Her voice gave me the creeps. It was as broken as her skin. But then, did she really think that I want this? That I signed up for this? Of course, I didn't. But why wouldn't they just understand me? I have no idea where Reggie went to. Why wouldn't they just choose to believe me? “I really don't have any idea where he is right now.” I said, trying to quell the sob rising in my throat. “They searched his house themselves after they brought me out, but they didn't find him in there. So, why then are they still asking me about him?” “Are you really going to be stubborn to the end?” she asked, as tears began to form in her eyes. “Do you want to end up like me? For your own good Clary, tell them what you know so that you can leave this place in one piece.” “Are you kidding me right now?” I asked, somethin
Chapter 26.AN UNEXPECTED REUNION.Clary's POV.“Let me out of here!” I yelled, pounding a fist against the door. “I will bring down this door if you don't let me out.” And to prove that I wasn't just saying those words, or better still, that I didn't just say those words, I lowered my knees and glanced at the hinges of the door, trying to see if I could find a way to break them. However, merely looking at it, I knew that it would be impossible to do so.“Damn it!” I said, pounding a fist on the door again and then pushing my fingers through my hair.Exhaling sharply, I turned and allowed my back sag against the door as I sat on the floor. Did they really think that locking me up in here would make me change my mind about saying a word concerning Reggie's whereabouts? Why couldn't they just understand that I knew nothing about it?I tossed my head down and scrubbed my hands over my face as I tried to gather my thoughts together. For one, I didn't just want to believe that there was
Chapter 25.ONE LAST CHANCE.Clary's POV.I actually had something in mind to say to him earlier when I asked him to wait. But before he could walk back to me, I changed my mind because I didn't think it was necessary anymore. Besides, I couldn't betray Reggie. Although, I wasn't so certain that Reggie would be there. But then again, I would have asked Ryker to check out the shack in the woods. Perhaps, he'll be able to find Reggie. But I know Ryker too well; he would storm that place with a lot of men and I couldn't risk that. And please, don't give me that look. At least, not now. I only thought about taking Ryker out of the picture. And what better way to do that than to send him to go up against a hybrid? So, I bet you understand me now.“I am sorry, but I changed my mind.” I said, with a shrug of my shoulder. “I don't think it's necessary to tell you anymore.” He tossed his head down and scratched his brows as he laughed low in his throat. He remained that way for a few second
