The silence in the study lasted only a few seconds before the door opened again.

My parents rushed into the room.

Dad took one look at Ian and Ruby, and the shock on his face quickly turned to anger.

“What the hell is going on here?”

Ruby's eyes filled with tears. Her lipstick was still smeared from the kiss, and she looked at Dad like a frightened child.

“Daddy...”

Dad didn't even let her finish.

He pointed toward the door.

“Ian. Get out. Now!”

Ian stood there, frozen.

His eyes moved to me first.

For one brief second, I thought he might say something. Explain himself. Apologize. Anything.

Instead, he looked at Ruby.

Then back at me.

There was guilt in his eyes, but there was something else, too. Hesitation. As if he couldn't decide which one of us he was supposed to choose.

That hurt almost as much as the kiss.

Finally, Ian lowered his head and walked out of the study without saying a word.

I watched him leave, my heart breaking with every step.

Mom immediately rushed to Ruby and pulled her into her arms.

“Honey...” she murmured, holding my sister tightly. “You know how fragile your sister is...”

I stared at them.

My sister was the one who had kissed my boyfriend.

My sister was the one who had betrayed me.

And somehow, Mom was worried about her.

Ruby sobbed against Mom's shoulder before looking at me.

“Clara, please don't hate me!” she cried. “I love him!”

The words hit me harder than I expected.

I love him.

She had actually said it.

There was no excuse left to make. No misunderstanding to explain away. Ruby loved my boyfriend, and apparently, that was enough for everyone to expect me to accept what they had done.

Dad turned toward me.

His anger was gone now. His expression was almost pleading.

“Clara...” he said carefully. “Be the bigger person here. It's Christmas.”

I stared at him.

For a moment, I couldn't believe what I'd just heard.

Be the bigger person?

I looked at Mom, still holding Ruby.

Then at the doorway where Ian had disappeared.

And suddenly, something inside me went completely still.

“The bigger person?” I repeated.

My voice sounded calmer than I felt.

“I've been the bigger person my whole life.”

Nobody answered.

Because they knew it was true.

I had always been the one who understood. The one who gave in. The one who stayed quiet when Ruby needed attention, when Mom needed help, when Dad wanted to keep the peace.

I'd spent years making excuses for everyone else.

I'd swallowed my hurt because someone always needed me to.

But not this time.

I looked around the room one last time, at the family I had spent my whole life trying to keep together. The Christmas decorations outside the study suddenly felt almost cruel. Just minutes ago, I'd been thinking about gifts, dinner, and spending the night with the people I loved.

Now I couldn't even recognize the life I'd walked into.

I had come into that room believing I was about to give Ian a Christmas gift.

Instead, I'd been given a reason to finally stop giving pieces of myself away.

I looked at my family one last time.

“Enjoy your perfect Christmas,” I said.

My voice trembled, but I didn't take it back.

“Without me.”

Mom's expression changed.

“Clara—”

I shook my head.

“No.”

I couldn't stay there another second.

I turned toward the door.

“I'm not spending Christmas here.”

I stopped long enough to look back at them.

“Not anymore.”

Then I walked out.

The front door slammed behind me.

And just like that, I left my family, my boyfriend, and the Christmas I had spent so much time trying to make perfect.

I didn't know it yet, but leaving that house would change my life forever.

I was still staring at Henry.I couldn't seem to help it.His words kept replaying in my head.I care if you're okay.No one had ever said it to me quite like that. Not because they didn't care about me.At least, I didn't think that was true.My family loved me.They just...Ruby always needed more.More attention.More help.More patience. And somewhere along the way, I'd gotten used to needing less.Henry was still looking at me.I finally broke eye contact.“Why do you care?”He shrugged, like the answer was obvious.“Because I do.”I stared at him. That was it?No clever joke?No sarcastic comment? No ridiculous smile?Just because I do?I looked away.Henry stood up.“Come on.”I frowned.“Where?”“Your room.”I blinked.“My room?”He looked at me as if I'd asked the most ridiculous question imaginable.“Unless you're planning on sleeping at the dinner table.”I rolled my eyes.“You're impossible.”“And yet, you hired me.”I opened my mouth to argue. Then closed it.Unfortunatel

Henry reeled me in and kissed me in front of everyone. For a second, my entire body froze.I hadn't expected it.Not like that. Not with my father sitting across the table, Ian standing nearby, and Ruby watching from the other side.Henry, apparently, had no such concerns. He pulled away as calmly as if he'd just finished making a perfectly ordinary point.I stared at him.He looked completely composed.Of course he did. That was Henry. He could walk into a room full of strangers, cause absolute chaos, and somehow look like he was enjoying a perfectly relaxing afternoon. His eyes met mine. There was a hint of amusement in them.Like he knew exactly what he'd just done to me.I opened my mouth, but no words came out. Then Henry leaned slightly closer.“Rule one, princesa.”My eyes widened.Right.Rule one.Pretend.The kiss had been part of the act.At least, that was what I kept telling myself. Before I could respond, I noticed Ruby. Her smile had disappeared. She was staring at us, a

Henry sat across from Ian as if this were the most ordinary dinner in the world. That was probably the most irritating part.He looked completely calm. Relaxed, even. Then he looked directly at Ian.Meanwhile, Ian had been staring at him like he was still trying to figure out exactly what kind of man had walked into his ex-girlfriend's family dinner wearing a green apron.I kept my eyes on my plate. This was getting ridiculous.First, Henry had shown up pretending to be my boyfriend. Then my father had started questioning him. Then Ian had appeared out of nowhere. And now we were apparently discussing Henry's finances over dinner.I wasn't sure whether to laugh or hide under the table.Henry picked up his glass and took a casual sip.“YouTube AdSense: fifty-two grand last month.”Ian's smile disappeared.I slowly looked up.Fifty-two thousand dollars? In one month?Henry continued before anyone could react.“My cookbook: thirty-four grand.”My eyebrows shot up.His cookbook? He had a

Everyone was still eating when I realized something strange. The tension in the room had finally started to disappear.Henry's steak had become the main attraction at the table. Even my dad, who rarely complimented anyone's cooking, had gone back for another piece.“Henry, this is amazing!” Mom said, smiling. “Where did you learn to cook like this?”“My mom taught me. Before she passed.”Mom's expression softened.“She taught you well.”Henry smiled.“She really did.”Dad took another bite and nodded approvingly. “Better than the steakhouse downtown.”Henry laughed. “Thank you, sir.”“And that's saying something. I know that place.”“Then I'll take that as a serious compliment.”Dad smiled. “You should.”I couldn't help smiling at Henry. He looked completely comfortable at the table, as if he'd been sitting with my family for years.Ruby took another bite.“I have to admit,” she said, “this is really good.”“Thank you.”She smiled politely before turning toward me.“You really lucked

Ruby's smile was the first thing I noticed. She stood in the living room beside Ian, looking perfectly pleased with herself. Christmas presents sat on the table behind them, wrapped in bright paper beneath the warm glow of the tree.I was still standing near the doorway when Ruby suddenly lifted her left hand right in front of my face. The diamond caught the light."Five carats, Clara. Ian proposed in Paris."I stared at the ring for a second.Five carats.Of course.Ruby watched my face closely, waiting for my reaction."You remember Paris, right?"I looked at her.She gave me an innocent smile."Oh... sorry. I forgot you've never been."There it was.Ruby's favorite way of getting under my skin. She didn't need to say anything openly cruel. She could make a perfectly sweet comment and somehow turn it into a competition.I forced a smile."Congratulations.""Thank you."She lowered her hand, but the smile on her face told me she wasn't finished.Ian finally spoke."Clara looks good."

The Jones family house had finally settled down. For a few precious minutes, there was no arguing, no awkward introductions, and no one asking about my new boyfriend.Upstairs, Mom and Aunt Simone were curled up together on the master bed, quietly discussing the most interesting subject of the evening: me.More specifically, my new boyfriend.Dad walked into the room and immediately noticed the suspicious atmosphere."What are you two hiding?""Nothing!" Mom asked."What kind of actual profession is that?""He's a YouTuber.""That's a profession now?""He makes a living from his channel."Dad stared at her."A channel where he cooks?""Yes.""While wearing an apron?"Aunt Simone smiled."Sometimes."Dad shook his head in disbel
