FAZER LOGINAfter catching her boyfriend, Ian, kissing her younger sister, Ruby, Clara Jones walks away from her family and spends the next year trying to rebuild her life. But when her mother begs her to come home for Christmas because her father is sick, Clara knows exactly what she is walking back into: the family that chose her sister, the ex who betrayed her, and the perfect couple they have become. There is only one problem. Clara refuses to show up alone. With the help of her best friend Mandy, she finds Henry Silva, a gorgeous Brazilian chef and YouTube sensation with two million followers—and hires him to be her fake boyfriend for Christmas. Henry agrees, but he has three rules: Clara does exactly what he says, nobody can know their relationship is fake, and most importantly, she cannot fall in love with him. Clara thinks that last rule will be easy. Then Henry walks into her parents' house, charms her family, makes her jealous ex look insignificant, and proves that the shirtless chef everyone is obsessed with is much more than a pretty face. As the fake relationship becomes harder to fake, Clara finds herself caught between the revenge she came home for and the feelings she never expected. Because Henry was supposed to be her fake boyfriend. She just never expected him to become the man she might actually fall for.
Ver maisChristmas was supposed to be perfect. I had spent weeks making sure of it.
The living room looked like something out of a Christmas movie, from the enormous tree glowing with golden lights to the carefully arranged ornaments that Mom insisted had to go in exactly the right places. Everything felt warm and beautiful, almost too perfect. Standing beside the tree, I held the small black watch box I had bought for Ian and smiled to myself.
I had spent a ridiculous amount of time choosing that watch. It wasn't cheap, but Ian deserved something special.
At least, that's what I believed then.
I turned the box over in my hands, imagining his reaction when he opened it.
“This Christmas will be perfect,” I whispered.
For the first time in a long time, I actually believed it.
“Still trying to be perfect, sis?”
I looked up and found Ruby standing a few feet away.
My younger sister was wrapped in a soft beige robe, her delicate features making her look as fragile as ever. She had always known how to make people worry about her. Even when she was perfectly fine, there was something about the way she carried herself that made everyone instinctively want to take care of her.
Her gaze dropped to the watch box in my hands.
I smiled and reached for the gift I had bought for her.
“It’s an early Christmas gift.”
Ruby accepted the package and opened it. When she pulled out the scarf, she ran her fingers over the fabric before looking at me.
“You always get the best stuff, huh?”
Something about the way she said it made me pause, but I quickly brushed the feeling aside.
“Do you like it?”
Her expression softened into a smile.
“Of course.”
I smiled back.
That was how things had always been between us. I gave, and Ruby took. Somehow, I was always the one making sure everyone was happy, even when it meant putting my own feelings aside.
Twenty minutes later, I was in the kitchen helping Mom prepare Christmas dinner. The smell of roasted garlic and herbs filled the room while Christmas music played softly in the background. Mom moved from one counter to another, checking everything twice, and I helped wherever I could.
She glanced at me as she worked.
“Your sister's been feeling better this week.”
“I know, Mom. I got her a scarf.”
Mom smiled.
“You're always so good to her.”
I lowered my eyes, unsure of what to say.
I'd heard those words my entire life.
Clara is responsible.
Clara understands.
Clara can handle it.
Clara is the bigger person.
Sometimes I wondered if being the older daughter meant I was never allowed to be anything else.
Mom suddenly looked toward the hallway, as if she'd just remembered something.
“Oh... Ian is in your dad's study. Go!”
My heart lifted instantly.
“Ian?”
“Yes. Go see him.”
I didn't need another invitation. I wiped my hands and left the kitchen, the watch box still safely in my hand.
Ian was here.
Just thinking about seeing him made me smile. I wanted to watch his face when he opened his gift. I wanted to see that familiar smile, hear his voice, and spend the evening believing that everything between us was exactly the way it was supposed to be.
I wanted this Christmas to be one I'd remember forever.
I walked down the hallway toward Dad's study, holding the box a little tighter. The house seemed quieter away from the living room, and the glow from the Christmas lights followed me across the walls.
I took a slow breath.
Maybe this really would be the perfect Christmas.
Maybe this year, everything would finally go right.
When I reached the study door, my smile returned.
“Ian? I have your gift...”
I pushed the door open.
And everything changed.
Ian was there.
But he wasn't alone.
Ruby was with him, and they were kissing beside the fireplace.
For a second, my mind refused to understand what I was seeing.
Then the watch box slipped from my fingers.
It hit the floor with a heavy thud.
I couldn't move.
I couldn't breathe.
Ian pulled away from Ruby, but neither of them spoke.
Ruby's lipstick was smeared, and when her eyes met mine, the color drained from her face.
She stared at me.
“Oh...” Her voice was barely a whisper.
“Clara.”
Henry sat across from Ian as if this were the most ordinary dinner in the world. That was probably the most irritating part.He looked completely calm. Relaxed, even. Then he looked directly at Ian.Meanwhile, Ian had been staring at him like he was still trying to figure out exactly what kind of man had walked into his ex-girlfriend's family dinner wearing a green apron.I kept my eyes on my plate. This was getting ridiculous.First, Henry had shown up pretending to be my boyfriend. Then my father had started questioning him. Then Ian had appeared out of nowhere. And now we were apparently discussing Henry's finances over dinner.I wasn't sure whether to laugh or hide under the table.Henry picked up his glass and took a casual sip.“YouTube AdSense: fifty-two grand last month.”Ian's smile disappeared.I slowly looked up.Fifty-two thousand dollars? In one month?Henry continued before anyone could react.“My cookbook: thirty-four grand.”My eyebrows shot up.His cookbook? He had a
Everyone was still eating when I realized something strange. The tension in the room had finally started to disappear.Henry's steak had become the main attraction at the table. Even my dad, who rarely complimented anyone's cooking, had gone back for another piece.“Henry, this is amazing!” Mom said, smiling. “Where did you learn to cook like this?”“My mom taught me. Before she passed.”Mom's expression softened.“She taught you well.”Henry smiled.“She really did.”Dad took another bite and nodded approvingly. “Better than the steakhouse downtown.”Henry laughed. “Thank you, sir.”“And that's saying something. I know that place.”“Then I'll take that as a serious compliment.”Dad smiled. “You should.”I couldn't help smiling at Henry. He looked completely comfortable at the table, as if he'd been sitting with my family for years.Ruby took another bite.“I have to admit,” she said, “this is really good.”“Thank you.”She smiled politely before turning toward me.“You really lucked
Ruby's smile was the first thing I noticed. She stood in the living room beside Ian, looking perfectly pleased with herself. Christmas presents sat on the table behind them, wrapped in bright paper beneath the warm glow of the tree.I was still standing near the doorway when Ruby suddenly lifted her left hand right in front of my face. The diamond caught the light."Five carats, Clara. Ian proposed in Paris."I stared at the ring for a second.Five carats.Of course.Ruby watched my face closely, waiting for my reaction."You remember Paris, right?"I looked at her.She gave me an innocent smile."Oh... sorry. I forgot you've never been."There it was.Ruby's favorite way of getting under my skin. She didn't need to say anything openly cruel. She could make a perfectly sweet comment and somehow turn it into a competition.I forced a smile."Congratulations.""Thank you."She lowered her hand, but the smile on her face told me she wasn't finished.Ian finally spoke."Clara looks good."
The Jones family house had finally settled down. For a few precious minutes, there was no arguing, no awkward introductions, and no one asking about my new boyfriend.Upstairs, Mom and Aunt Simone were curled up together on the master bed, quietly discussing the most interesting subject of the evening: me.More specifically, my new boyfriend.Dad walked into the room and immediately noticed the suspicious atmosphere."What are you two hiding?""Nothing!" Mom said a little too quickly.Aunt Simone glanced at her before answering."We were just talking about Clara's boyfriend."Dad's expression immediately darkened."The naked YouTuber?"Mom sighed."Theodore...""The guy who cooks in an apron?""What about him?" Mom asked."What kind of actual profession is that?""He's a YouTuber.""That's a profession now?""He makes a living from his channel."Dad stared at her."A channel where he cooks?""Yes.""While wearing an apron?"Aunt Simone smiled."Sometimes."Dad shook his head in disbel
