Ignatius," she told him, looking at him, her face inscrutable, "the beast we encountered. it was not merely an assault. It was a message."

"A message?" Ignatius questioned, swiping the sweat from his forehead with the back of his hand, although the sweat on his skin was already gone in the hot air.

Krishna nodded, her mouth compressing into a tight line. "It's bound to the land, to the heart of the curse. Vosvak's using more than pure muscle. He's playing on the heart of Brunschière itself, infusing it with darkness." Her gaze narrowed as if she could see the threads of taint insinuating themselves deep beneath the surface. "He's already spreading his reach."

“What do you mean? That thing was a creature of corruption, but it’s gone now, right?” Ignatius asked, not understanding the full weight of Krishna’s words.

Krishna’s gaze shifted towards the village, her thoughts lingering on the people they had sworn to protect. They had to remain strong, even as the storm darkened above them.

The gale screamed down the quiet streets of Brunschière, a shriek that bounced off the stone walls, as though the town itself was attempting to hold back the approaching tempest. Clouds above seethed like some living entity, black and heavy. The air was charged with electricity, heavy and heavy-laden with a feeling of foreboding. It was more than a storm now. It was an plague, a herald of Vosvak's coming. His dark power was drawing nearer, deepening its roots in the soil, encircling Brunschière with an iron vise.Krishna led the line of villagers and soldiers formed in haste at the front, her fingers smeared with the blood of the demonic beast they had battled mere hours ago. Her breathing was calm, but under cover of her serene face, her heart pounded. She could sense the quakes of the ground under her feet, the subtle beat of Vosvak's energy coursing like a contagion through the land itself. His presence weighed upon her like a stone on her chest, a pressure that made every breath a

The storm beyond Brunschière had come alive, churning with dark energy and foreboding power. The sky had darkened to a threatening crimson, bathing the town in an otherworldly glow. Despite the continuing tremors that rocked the ground beneath their feet, the villagers cowered in terror, but shared a mutual strength of will.Krishna stood at the head of the assembled villagers, her eyes fixed on the horizon. Ignatius stood to one side of her, his hand settled firmly on the hilt of his sword. The air was heavy with tension, but Krishna's eyes did not waver. She could sense it the plague approached. And then, as if called forth by the storm itself, the ground burst open with a sound like thunder. From the crack in the earth, a thing unlike anything they had ever seen slid out. Its form was a coiling mass of writhing black tendrils and churning shadows, its shape shifting and fluid, as if constructed of some concentrated darkness and tainted flesh. Its eyes if one could even call them th

The chamber of the Citadel was as icy as death. The stones vibrated beneath the gravity of the moment. The Elders, stiff and pale, stood at a remove, their eyes fixed on Miyal and Kaelen, who stood in the midst of the room. Chains that held Miyal's wrists aflame with an odd and unnerving light, their links glowing softly with a deep, unnatural radiance. The air itself snapped, full of tension of what was to come. The eyes of Miyal, silver-gold with the fire of his rebellion, clashed with Kaelen's for an instant. Both brothers did not require words. Kaelen extended his hand, and with a faint grunt of effort, he took hold of the chain in one hand, while his other hand grasped the hilt of his sword. There was a calm before the storm a breath held too long. And then, as one, they yanked. The chains let out a scream as they fought, a low, unearthly sound that reverberated through the chamber like the wailing of an ancient creature. The room seemed to grow more and more pressurized, a storm

The words hung in the room, adhering to the worn stone like the lingering resonance of a bell. Outside, the shudders grew deep, rumbling, as if the Citadel itself gasped in effort. Dust drifted down from the vaulted ceiling, coating the crevices between the runes that still glowed with faint ward-light.Miyal remained upright even as the gashes on his chest and the chains sinking deeper as if to push his will to its limits. Every link pulsed with a soft, wavering light, half-gold and half-shadow, a contradiction of strength that the Elders could not tolerate for more than a moment.Kaelen leaned his hands on the stone table, speaking softly but critically. "The wards are trembling once more. You can sense it. Vosvak applies more pressure by the hour. He is aware the people protest. He will not stop until one of them crumbles."The youngest Elder, the ash-braided female, nodded, her knuckles strained as she gripped her staff. "The people have already made their choice. They march, they

The fearsome beast emerged from the ground with a thunderous cry, its shape enormous and serpentine, its scales glinting with an iridescent, obsidian sheen. It loomed over the villagers, its golden eyes blazing like molten lava, their gaze locked on Krishna as if it understood precisely who ruled the hearts of the defenders. Its form coiled and twisted in mid-air, arcing with black energy, as it spat in a tongue no mortal ear could comprehend. The earth under Krishna's feet shook as the form of the beast started to completely manifest itself out of the tear in the ground. It appeared to stretch towards the very heavens, its scales shining like pieces of shattered darkness, and its mouth opened wide in a silent, awful scream that shook the air. The villagers, who had been rallying with their spirits renewed, stumbled, eyes wide with terror.Krishna froze, her hand clenching around the hilt of her sword. She sensed the behemoth's tremendous power a power so much greater than anything th
