Krishna took a step closer to the transparent wall. “So he thinks I’m fragile now?” Her voice cracked—gravel mixed with wildfire. “A child to be locked away while the world burns?”

No answer. Only silence. The kind that pressed down like burial soil.

Her eyes scanned the perimeter. Sigils, well-inscribed. Wards in the shape of branches. Traps set into stone. A cage constructed not only for escape—but for a being strong enough to shatter continents.

Ignatius had schemed this.

Schemed her.

She curled her hands into fists, nails digging into palms until blood pricked through.

"He's scared I'll die," she muttered to herself. "But if I linger, they will."

She swiveled towards the closest rune—a pale amber ring inscribed in shield-like crescent script—and shoved her palm through it.

The magic surged.

It knocked her backward like an icy wall. She thrashed, breath torn from her lungs, and knees knocked the earth. Smoke curled from her fingers.

"Lady Krishna!" cried the knight, taking one step

The bramble wall re-coalesced behind her, roots curled like fingers, imprisoning Brunschière once again.Jessa spun. And wept. Not the soft weeping of accepted loss but the guttural, cruel sobs of a woman still attempting to barter with destiny. She dropped to her knees, arms wrapped about the fever-warm child, holding him to her breast like the gods themselves might take him from her if she let him go.Wind shrieked over the dying hills. Salt scalded the air. Somewhere behind her, a raw, gurgling shriek was cut off in a sound too wet to be anything but final."Why?" she panted, her voice torn. "Why us? Why here?"The boy quivered weakly. His green eyes, now rimmed with gray. He reached out, touched her face."Mama's gone," he whispered. "Aren't you going too?"Jessa snapped. She kissed his forehead, sobbing harder, shaking her head even as her lips trembled with a lie.“No. No, baby. I’m staying. I’ll never leave you. We’ll.we’ll find a way.”But even as she spoke, her vision blurred

Night descended awry. Not quietly. Not kindly. It descended like a warning.A dull, guttural thrum beneath the earth. A shaking in the marrow of trees. And in Koralhollow village, which lies in the hills beyond the shadow of the Citadel, the ground fissured like it struggled to breathe.Mira, the midwife, had just completed boiling herbs for the twins' fever when she sensed it the faint change in the wind. The aroma of salt. Not sea-salt. Not healing. But something old. Drenched in decay. She spun toward her husband."Do you sense that?"Before he could respond, the window glass fractured—not shattered, but cleaved neatly down the center. As if it were crying. Then the scream.High. Hollow. Off.A child's scream but not from a child.Mira let go of the ladle and ran outside. And she saw it.Where sun root and bluegrain used to grow, her neighbors' crops had withered in minutes. Blackened stalks from root to blossom. Birds jerked in the air before they fell, feathers aflame mid-air.A

The throne room of the Citadel was black—darker than midnights, darker than ash. A red moon stared in at the stained-glass ceiling, and below, Perfera stood barefoot on blood-stained stone, her dress streaming behind her like ink.Chains rattled. The Elders were hauled in one by one—blood-stained, blindfolded, broken.Rythe came first. His mouth had been stitched up.Amiel came next, teeth smashed, wrists burned with dark runes. And then there was Eshra—though hardly on her feet. Her weight hung against the knight who pulled her along. Her eyes, however—her eyes still flamed like iron under ice.Perfera came down from the steps of her throne, barefoot. She glided like water. Like poison."You disappoint me," she said quietly, kneeling in front of Eshra. "I thought wisdom with age."No one replied. Rythe groaned behind the stitch of his lip."I gave you asylum. A seat at my court. My crown. And you opted for betrayal. Why?"Eshra coughed—blood and spittle splatting at Perfera's feet."

"To save you!" he thundered back, his voice straining with the load. "I had to—""You had a choice!"They burst back into the warded boundary. The sigils spat as Ignatius emerged through it, holding her close like a drenched relic. The knights around them winced back. No one felt brave enough to interfere. He arrived at her room and kicked the door open with his boot, bursting in and depositing her there—not gently, not harshly, just… helplessly.Krishna retreated a step, eyes feral, hair aglow like embers. "You lied to me. You promised you'd never harm me."He stood, panting, his jaw clamped hard enough to quiver."I didn't want to hurt you," he spoke softer now. "But you weren't going to stay. You were going to walk into hell again like it owed you something."She moved towards him, fire coursing through her every step. "Because it does! The Citadel is burning! The children are dying! The Elders bled a pact in salt and shadow while you made me drink tea and watch the stars!""And yo

"Yes."Ignatius's shoulders slumped.Krishna moved forward, shoving the ring into the hollow of his palm."But I love you too, differently. And I need you, Ignatius. I need you to be the shield at the small of my back. Not the chain at my ankles."He folded his fingers over the ring.Swallowed hard.If you leave, he said, you may not return."I know.""If she kills you again.""She won't," Krishna answered, his tone solid. "Because this time, I'm not afraid to burn with her."Ignatius shut his eyes. Then—"What do you want me to do?"She smiled through the tears."Call the old magic. Rally what's left of the shadow guard. Initiate Brunschière's defenses. If Perfera turns back. they'll require a guardian."The clearing shook with silence.Mist wrapped around like phantoms among the trees, attracted by the sorcery growing in Krishna's veins. Bitterness had shrouded itself over the air—salted with despair.Ignatius remained motionless, shoulders hunched like a man carrying a collapsing s
