HIDDEN LIFE

I left the city the same day I signed the divorce papers, I didn't give myself any time to think because I know If I did, I might have hesitated, I might have remembered the man he used to be before power hardened him, before silence replaced the affection and before another woman learned his habits better than I ever did.

I packed only what I could carry and walked away from a marriage that had already died long before the law was pronounced.

At the airport, I just sat in the waiting area, waiting for my flight to board, I thought I was done with Ethan's saga then Jasmine, Ethan’s ex-side chick, blocked my path. "Look at you, running away like the weak thing that you are." Her voice dripped venom. "Sienna wins and you just folded? You didn't even fight for your marriage"

I kept my eyes forward and remained silent.

Jasmine laughed. "I also heard that you signed the divorce papers with no alimony, no house, no nothing, why, Ava?  Were you too scared to take what was yours?" She leaned closer. "Ethan told me you were soft when we were together, I guess he was right."

People began to watch us but I remained  still.

"Ethan needs a real woman," Jasmine sneered. "Someone who knows how to ride the wave, if you know what I mean.”

“You were just a placeholder till he found someone spicy."

My face didn't blink.

Jasmine snorted. "No wonder he can not stay with just you because you don't know how to entertain a man like Ethan Blackwood. Sienna got skills and that is why she is moving in."

The flight attendant called: "Flight 123 to Paris, boarding now."

I grabbed my bag and walked as Jasmine's words hung, "He will forget you by tonight, you are just yesterday’s news ."

As I settled into my seat on the plane, a sigh of relief escaped my lips. I leaned back on the seat and closed my eyes and allowed the hum of the engines to calm my racing thoughts. "He's not worth it, Ava," I told myself. Ethan was never good enough for me.

Jasmine was the first slut he brought home and he boldly introduced her to me as his girlfriend but unfortunately for him, Jasmine had her plans already and that was far beyond being his girlfriend.

Her intentions was to get into his heart and when she finally make it to his bed, she will drug him and steal all his as, his money, his expensive gold and his valuable documents.

I peeped  through the window and watched all her move and when she was about going home the next day I asked Ethan to search her bag, he didn't regard me at first but when I kept insisting on it, he searched her and to his surprise his beautiful and flawless girlfriend stole from him.

He pushed her out of the house and hugged me tight, I thought that was the last, month later he came in with Sienna.

If not for the flirting habit of Ethan, cheap slut like Jasmine and Sienna would not have the right to talk to me not to talk of Jasmine even blocking me at the airport and blabbering.

I just let that wave.

My hand rested unconsciously on my stomach, though nothing had changed physically yet, no bum, no movement but I felt that quiet awareness that my body was no longer mine alone. The nausea came and went during the journey, leaving me so pale and exhausted.

When I arrived at the small town I had chosen just far enough to disappear and close enough to survive, night had already fallen.

I dragged my suitcase into the modest room I had rented in advance and locked the door behind me. The room smelled faintly of detergent and old wood, it wasn’t luxurious nor was it impressive but it was mine.

I sank onto the bed and stared at the ceiling listening to my heartbeat slowly, just then Ethan’s face surfaced in my mind without permission.

I turned onto my side curling slightly with one arm wrapped protectively around my abdomen. “You are actually wrong,” I whispered. “I will survive for me and my child.”

The early months were quiet, difficult and also lonely. Some mornings, I couldn’t keep food down at all and other days, the exhaustion pressed so heavily on my chest that even standing felt like a huge task but I endured.

I found a little work just enough to get by and to keep going, I took whatever came my way, I also learnt how to stretch every penny trying to push through all the exhaustion and fear and to remind myself daily that survival itself was a quiet kind of victory.

Though there were really dangerous moments, when I almost reached for my phone, when fear whispered to me that Ethan had a right to know and then I remembered how easily he let me go and then the urge disappeared and I will also tell myself If he didn’t fight for me, then he doesn’t deserve to know about the life growing inside me.

The day I went into labor, I labored without anyone by my side, I gripped the bed sheets as each wave tore through me, I swallowed every cry that dared to come and refused to give voice to the man my heart instinctively reached for.

Sweat, fear and determination blurred together but I still stayed silent, this pain was the price of my choice and I endured it alone because this fight belonged to me and me alone.

When the nurse finally placed my baby in my arms, the world fell silent. He was small and so perfect, when his dark eyes blinked open slowly. He looked just like Ethan and this realization hurt more than I expected.

For a second, grief threatened to overwhelm me, the grief for the family that could have been and for the man Ethan never chose to be but then my son curled his tiny fingers around mine and everything else faded immediately.

“I’m here,” I whispered with tears sliding freely now. “I’m not going anywhere.” I named him Leo, a quiet and strong name, a name that belonged to him and him alone.

Years passed, slowly and I rebuilt myself, I studied when Leo slept and I worked when he smiled and dreamed again when I thought I had forgotten how, that woman I used to be, the one who waited patiently, hoped and endured disappeared piece by piece and in her place stood a beautiful, stronger and unbreakable woman.

  • THE SON BETWEEN US    My credibility on the line

I stared at the screen for a second too long before picking up the call, my hands were shivering. “Good day Miss Ava,”“Good day Mr. Cole,” I tried the best I could not to sound nervous.“I hope you are not having any challenges over there.”“No sir” I lied but it's not actually a lie because I have been working smoothly without having any challenge until this morning.“Good to hear. We trusted you that was why we placed you on this mission.”That was something I would have blushed about but I could not. My heart keeps racing.“This is just a soft reminder that this project is about to be over. As you know the final meeting is in two days. So prepare all the valid documents.”“Ok sir.”“Good. As we both know, WSM groups are really strict so I urge you to put up your best behavior.”“I will sir.”“I trust you, Miss Ava. Bye for now.” he hung up.Trust. He kept on saying that word, I can't afford to lose that trust. I have worked with this company for three years and so much value has

  • THE SON BETWEEN US    MY SON IS THE LEVERAGE

Ava POVMornings had become my safest ritual.I woke Leo, helped him brush his teeth and as usual we argued over socks. Then I braided my hair while he sat on the bed swinging his legs and telling me half-formed stories about dreams that never made sense but always made me smile.By the time I was dressed for work and Leo was ready for his nanny, I felt put together again, like the cracks inside me had been sealed, at least for the day.We stepped out of the apartment together, the sunlight spilling into the hallway then someone familiar to my past blocked my path.Jasmine.For a second, I wondered if my past had finally decided to hunt me down in physical form.“Well, well, well.” she said, her eyes dragging over me slowly. “Look who it is. Ava.”I stopped and tightened my grip on Leo’s hand. He leaned closer to me instinctively, his small fingers curled into my palm.“When did you come back?” she continued without waiting for an answer. “Wow… you have really changed, I almost did

  • THE SON BETWEEN US    I FAILED HER QUIETLY

Jasmine? It's been five good years since I threw her out of my house and asked her never to return and since then I haven't set my eyes on her. What is she doing here?“Good morning, Ethan.” “I don't need that, what the hell are you doing in my house?”“Don't worry, I will just go.”“Did you miss the address of the actual place you were heading to?” She didn't reply. Immediately she turned and left shamelessly, she has always been weird. What does she really want? I know that she is definitely up to something, but whatever it is, it is never going to work. She is not just a slut, she is also a chronic thief. Her parents really thought they had brought up a child in a good manner but unknown to them that she is just another wasted sperm.I went inside the bedroom, Sienna was still sleeping and snoring, disturbing the peace of the house. I went straight to the bathroom, freshened up and prepared for work. I left for work without any ranting because she was sleeping, that's the only ti

  • THE SON BETWEEN US    I signed my family away

Ethan POVShe walked past me like I wasn't there, not even a flicker of recognition. Her eyes stayed forward and focused only on the little boy at her side and her hand was also locked around him, so firm and protective, like she was afraid the world might snatch him away if she loosened her grip.I swallowed hard.“Ava,” I called. But there was no response. My chest tightened, I tried again and louder this time. “Ava.”She didn’t even slow down nor turn. It was like my voice couldn’t reach her anymore. The boy laughed at something she said as his head tipped back slightly, that sound hit me harder than any slap ever could, I recognized it, the tone and the careless joy. It sounded so much like me when I was younger before I learned how to bury everything that mattered. My son doesn’t even know who I am, that thought made my hands shake.I took a step toward them, then stopped. What would I even say? I’m sorry felt too small, It sounded like a lie even to myself.Three years, three

  • THE SON BETWEEN US    I chose my son over peace

I yanked my hand out of Ethan’s grip as my eyes were still glued to Sienna. The sound echoed louder in my head than it should have. She was still smiling, that slow but poisonous smile that said she believed she had won something and she believed she could say anything and walk away untouched.“You really don’t know when to stop, do you?” I said quietly. The room suddenly felt smaller as the walls themselves were leaning in and listening to the saga.I took a step forward as my heels were clicking softly against the floor.“Ava, calm down,” Ethan said behind me but I didn’t even turn.“Stay out of this,” I warned, making my voice low and dangerous.“This doesn’t concern you anymore.” I added Sienna laughed under her breath. “Look at you,” she said. “So emotional, all because of a…” She stopped.Because I was already moving, not recklessly but with pure instinct. Motherhood had really stripped fear out of me long ago.Ethan caught me again, his arms wrapping around my waist, holding me

  • THE SON BETWEEN US    BLOOD TRUTH

I stared at the screen and my hand shaked slightly. I didn’t sleep that night, the message stayed burned into my mind long after I turned the face of my phone down, I knew who it was from. Sienna had never seemed subtle, she had always preferred quiet cruelty, the one that left no fingerprints but plenty of damage.Whatever Sienna was planning, it's going to bounce back to her.I sat on the edge of the bed and watched Leo sleep, my chest tight with a fear I hadn’t felt in years. I had protected this secret with everything I had but now, it was no longer just mine.*****The next morning, everything unraveled and it happened too fast as if fate had finally decided it was tired of waiting.I was in the conference room, almost rounding up a presentation, when the door opened abruptly, every one in the hall turned to look and Ethan Blackwood walked in looking like someone that sleep had stopped working for.Gasps rippled through the room, my chest began to bang but I didn’t falter. I jus
