The Shadow King looked back at her through Rowan’s face. His grip on her arms tightened. Rowan’s body kept trembling as the dark power fought against her crownfire.

The Shadow King looked back at her through Rowan’s face. His grip on her arms tightened. Rowan’s body kept trembling as the dark power fought against her crownfire."You cannot hide from me, Lyra," the voice said. It echoed through the throne room like thunder. "I have watched you since before you were born. I know your power. I know your fears."Lyra tried to pull her hands away but the mark held them in place. The crownfire still flowed from her palms but it grew weaker against the growing darkness."Get out of him," she said through gritted teeth. "Leave Rowan alone."The Shadow King laughed. The sound came deep from Rowan’s chest. It made the walls of the sanctuary shake. Kael and Vera moved closer but stayed outside the circle. Their faces showed fear and anger."Why would I leave?" the voice asked. "This body is mine by right. His father gave him to me. His soul belongs to the shadows."Rowan’s head jerked back. Pain twisted across his face. Lyra could see him fighting inside. H

Lyra and Rowan stood in the center of the throne room. The scroll from the hidden panel lay open on the stone table. Its words gave them hope. A ritual that could weaken the shadow mark. Not break it completely, but make it smaller and less dangerous."We have to try," Lyra said. "The sanctuary is helping us. I can feel it."Rowan looked at her. His face showed worry but also trust. "If it hurts you, we stop. No matter what."Kael and Vera stood guard near the doors. They kept watch in case more shadow creatures came. They cleared a space on the floor. Lyra drew a circle with the symbols from the scroll. Rowan took off his shirt and sat in the middle. The dark mark looked angry on his skin. The black veins pulsed slowly.Lyra knelt in front of him. She placed her hands on his chest, right over the mark. Her palms felt warm. "I will push my crownfire into you. The scroll says it should burn away the weak parts of the shadow."Rowan took a deep breath and nodded. "Do it."She closed he

She pulled her hand out of the pool quickly. The image vanished. Her heart beat fast. She needed to find Rowan. She walked back through the throne room. The invisible wall that kept the others out had disappeared. Rowan, Kael, and Vera stepped inside carefully. Their eyes were wide as they looked around at the rebuilt sanctuary."Lyra," Rowan said. He rushed to her and pulled her into his arms. "Are you alright? We saw lights and heard voices.""I saw memories," she said. Her voice shook. "My parents. The betrayal. But there is more here. We need to search."They moved together deeper into the sanctuary. The halls glowed with soft silver light. Every room felt full of old power. Kael and Vera checked side rooms while Lyra and Rowan stayed in the main path.Rowan stopped at a small alcove hidden behind one of the pillars. Inside sat a stone chest covered in the same symbols they had seen on the map. He knelt and touched the lid. It opened with a soft click.Inside were old scrolls and

The throne room formed from the dust. Tall pillars rose around Lyra. A high ceiling appeared overhead with carvings of stars and wolves. Two thrones stood on a raised platform at the far end. One glowed with soft silver light. The other seemed darker. Lyra stepped closer. Her crownfire burned quietly inside her chest. Rowan and the others stood outside the main hall. An invisible wall kept them back. She was alone with the sanctuary. She walked up the steps to the thrones. The stone felt warm under her hands. When she touched the arm of the silver throne, a bright flash filled her mind. She saw her parents. They stood in this very room. Her father wore a crown of light. Her mother sat beside him with a crown of mixed silver and shadow. They looked young and strong. Wolves from many packs knelt before them. The sanctuary was full of life and music. Torches burned bright on the walls. Her mother smiled at her father. She placed a hand on her belly. Lyra realized with a shock that she w

The beast lunged at Lyra with its smoky arms raised high. She threw up another wall of crownfire but it was too late. The creature smashed through and knocked her to the ground. Pain shot through her side. She tasted blood in her mouth.Rowan roared and drove his sword deep into the beast’s back. Kael and Vera attacked from the sides. Their blades cut through smoke again and again. Lyra pushed herself up and sent one final blast of white fire straight into the creature’s chest. The crownfire burned hotter than before. The beast screamed and exploded into black mist that scattered in the wind.Silence fell over the ruins. Lyra breathed hard. Her body ached but she was still standing.Rowan rushed to her side. "Are you hurt?""I am fine," she said. She looked at the burn on his arm. "But you are not."Vera wiped blood from her face. "We need to keep moving. More of them could come."They mounted their horses again and rode toward the coordinates on the old map. The wind howled through t

Rowan did not wait. He kicked his horse forward and swung his sword in a hard arc. The blade cut through the beast’s shoulder. Black smoke sprayed out but the creature did not bleed. It simply reformed and struck back. Its long arm slammed into Rowan’s horse. The animal screamed and fell. Rowan jumped clear just in time and rolled on the ground. He came up with his sword ready."Stay back!" he shouted to the others. The beast roared. It swung again. Rowan dodged but the edge of the smoke arm caught his side. He flew backward and hit the stone wall of the ruins hard. He gasped in pain and pushed himself up slowly. The shadow mark on his chest burned bright under his shirt.Kael and Vera charged from the sides. Their swords flashed. They cut into the beast’s legs and body. Smoke poured out but the creature grew stronger. It whipped its arm and knocked Vera off her feet. She crashed into the dirt and did not get up right away.Lyra felt her crownfire surge inside her.
