IRIS.

I wasn’t done putting my clothes into my bag when Constantine called me to his office and asked me to sign the divorce papers.

I didn’t have time to read the whole document, but I read the part where our separation would take effect today. So I signed it.

“Do you know why he wants to buy me?” I asked Constantine as I placed the pen on top of the papers.

I told myself that as long as I could break away from my husband, the reason didn’t matter. But I still couldn’t fight the curiosity of wanting to know more.

“Alpha Draco has a brothel. My only guess is that he will throw you there.”

“A brothel?” My eyes widened.

“Yes,” Constantine chuckled wickedly before he cupped my chin and tilted my head to meet his gaze. “What were you expecting? That he’ll make you his Luna? You will end up as a broken woman passed around. I doubt if you can even walk after the first night. I heard his brothel is a big hit, and women hop from one customer to another in one night.”

I stared at him in disbelief, but I did my best not to show that the thought alone terrified me.

“But I can save you.” He added.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“Run away from him at the first chance that you get. I’m sure you remember how to reach the warehouse, right? Go there, and I will hide you from him. He doesn’t need to know you came back to me. I can hide you.”

“Why would I come back to you?” I asked him. I wanted to say all the reasons why I shouldn’t, but I was also sure he knew them.

“Why? Because I’m the better option between the two of us. When you run away from him, he will find you, unless I hide you. He would never think you would return to me.” He smiled at me warmly. That same smile that he gave me three years ago. The smile that made me trust him.

But I knew better now that behind that smile was evil waiting to strike.

“If you think life with me is hard, imagine having to be passed around with different men every night.” He was speaking like he cared about me.

“You began to pass me around too…” I told him.

“I learned my lesson, love. I promise I won’t do that again. Just make sure to come back to me.” He said softly as he leaned his head closer, and I knew he would kiss me.

I tilted my head to the side, and his lips ended on my cheek. Instead of pulling away or forcing me to face him, he gently brushed his lips against my skin. “Won’t you miss this, my love?”

“No…” I had no idea where I got the courage to say those words. Maybe because I knew I was no longer bound to him.

He let go of my chin harshly before a wicked laugh ripped past his throat. “You think you can act tough. Who do you think you are, Iris?”

“I will take my leave now,” I said, and I swiftly turned around, but before I could make the first step, a hand snaked around my wrist and pulled me back roughly.

Everything happened so fast, and the next thing I knew, I was pinned against the wall as his mouth crushed against mine. A whimper of defiance escaped my throat as I struggled to break free from his hold.

I had been in this position too many times, and I already knew what was coming next if I struggled, but I still never learned.

I kept kicking and ramming my hands onto his chest and face, hitting and clawing him wherever I could.  And just as I expected, he punched my stomach. A loud cry came out of me as tears poured down my cheeks before my body slid down against the wall. I became immobilized. I cried as he slowly ripped my shirt and pulled down my bra.

Then I heard an engine being turned off. Someone arrived, but it seemed he didn’t notice.

As if by magic, an invisible energy surged within me, and I found the strength to push him away just as he was about to capture my breast with his mouth.

He wasn’t expecting it, so he stumbled backward. I got up and kicked his face with all my might before I rushed toward the door.

I heard him cursing me, but I continued to run despite the pain in my stomach. I landed in the arms of the Alpha Draco.

I had no idea if what Constantine said about him was true, but it no longer mattered. All I knew was I needed to get away from this place, so I clung to him.

But then, seeing Alpha Draco and his temper terrified me, and it made me doubt my decision. What if Constantine was right? Life here was hell, but what if it would be so much worse with him?

Flashes of my life came running into my head.

Every new chapter kept getting worse. I was born in poverty, and I thought it was already bad, but when I moved to my father’s home, I realized my old life was better. Then I tried to get away and ended up with Constantine. And he was way worse than my father’s family.

What if moving to Alpha Draco would be the same thing? If what Constantine was telling me about the brothel was right, then I just plunged myself deeper into hell. I didn’t want that.

So, while everyone was busy—while Alpha Draco was pummeling Constantine’s face and his Beta was nowhere to be found—I slowly stepped back and turned around.

I walked out of the house as quietly as possible until I reached the grounds. I saw men looking at me, but it looked like they had no idea who I was, so I just kept walking.

The moment I was near the forest, I ran.

I had no idea where I would go. All I knew was that I didn’t want to be in hell anymore. I just wanted to be free from all these miseries.

I kept running with no direction.

Even if I had lived in this place for three years, I had never wandered off too deep into the forest. I was not allowed to. And I had already passed the area where I usually picked up my herbs, so I was no longer familiar with where I was heading.

The sun was already setting, and I knew soon it would be dark. By then, no one could spot me, especially Constantine. He had weak vision at night. But my only problem was the cold. The spring was in full bloom, but we still had chilly nights, especially for someone without a wolf like me.

I stopped and rested my hand on the tree, catching my breath as I looked around, checking where I was and in which direction I should go.

It didn’t take long before I heard paws thudding on the ground. The sound was coming closer.

A wolf.

“Please, please….” I mumbled as I began running again. I had no idea if the direction I chose would be my saving grace or would lead me back to the people who wanted to capture me. But I knew this time, despite my body wanting to give up, I would keep fighting.

I ran straight ahead until I saw a figure begin to form in the direction I was heading. It was too late to turn around as I was running at full speed, but I did slow down, planning to head in another direction. But when I saw who it was, my own feet decided on their own and eventually stopped.

Alpha Draco was sitting under a tree, munching on what looked like a small branch as he looked at me. He was naked, and with his knees pulled up and legs apart, I could see his manhood. But he didn’t seem bothered by it. Of course, I was sure being Alpha allowed him to be naked as much as he wanted, and no one would complain.

“Are you done running?” He asked in a bored tone.

But before I could answer him, I heard someone approaching. I looked around, and when I returned my gaze to where the Alpha was, he was already gone.

Did he leave me?

“There you are!” Some said in an annoyed tone. “Boss Constantine is already pissed off at you. Let’s go home!”

I stepped back and glared at Raul. “Don’t you dare touch me! I’m not coming with you!”

I abruptly turned around, ready to run away, when I collided with another body.

Gary gripped my arms before he laughed wickedly. “You still never learn, Iris. No matter how many times you try to run away, we will always find you.”

“Let me go!” I began ramming my hands onto his chest. His hold on me tightened as he and Raul laughed together.

“Maybe we should tell Boss we didn’t find her. And keep her somewhere. I’d been dying to fuck this woman...”

He was not able to finish his words when a loud growl erupted in the air. His hold on me loosened as he turned his body around, and I took advantage of it. I stepped back, ready to run, but my feet got stuck in my spot when I saw a black wolf up in the air. Like it just appeared out of nowhere and landed on Gary.

In the blink of an eye, the wolf’s mouth grabbed his head, tearing it apart from his neck.

A shrill shriek of terror ripped past my lips as Gary’s blood splattered on my face and the black wolf landed before me, clutching his head. It then let go of the head, letting it roll to the ground before it shifted into his human form.

The wolf became Alpha Draco, with blood on his mouth and running down his throat.

“Tell Constantine that if he sends another man to trail Iris, his head will be the next one to roll on the ground...” He said in a cold tone.

I could hear the heavy breathing behind me. “Yes, Alpha.”

“Take his head!”

“No, Alpha,” Raul begged. His voice sounded completely different from the arrogant man who always mocked me.

“I said, pick up his fucking head and give it to Constantine!” Alpha Draco growled.

“Alpha... please.”

“Pick it up, or there will be two heads on the ground...”

He was not done with his words yet when I heard a scrambling of feet and saw Raul on my side picking up Gary’s head. In no time, he was already running away.

I stayed frozen in my spot as tears fell from my eyes. I could taste Gary’s blood, but I dared not move, terrified his wrath would fall on me.

If I had thought I would run away earlier, I couldn’t anymore. I didn’t want to die yet.

The moment his gaze went back to me, I mustered all my courage to speak up. “How much do I need to pay you so you will let me go?” I asked in a slow, respectful tone.

“How much money do you have?”

“I have a small savings in my room. Almost two thousand.”

“I gave my land in exchange for you.” He said, frowning, as he crossed his arms across his chest. “I don’t think two thousand will cover even one percent of that.”

Sobs escaped my throat as my body began to tremble. “How many years will I have to work in your brothel before I can pay you? Before you let me go?”

“Brothel? What are you talking about? I don’t have a brothel, Iris.”

  • THE SUBSTITUTE LUNA   Chapter 98

IRIS’ POV“I will not take up any more of your time, Princess Adessa. And if your offer still stands, Draco and I would love to join you and Prince Kael for breakfast tomorrow.” I bowed my head toward her, letting it remain bowed until she finished speaking. “I’ll see you tomorrow, then, Luna Iris.”I nodded again and tilted my head to meet her gaze. “And welcome to the Kingdom of Absalom. I hope you’ll enjoy your stay here.”“Thank you, Princess Adessa. I know I will.”“If you need anything, the reception office at the manor has an officer 24/7, so just go there and leave a message if you need anything. Or if you have a message for me.”“I will do that. Thank you so much for your generosity.”She smiled at me but before she could leave, someone approached us. If I remember it correctly, he was one of her brothers. “Is she among the guests at the dinner tonight?” The prince asked the moment he stopped beside the princess.“Yes, she is.” She replied to him before she turned to introd

  • THE SUBSTITUTE LUNA   Chapter 97

IRIS’ POV. My heart was thundering as I followed the Royal Guard and made my way to where Princess Adessa was. She was there alone and I had no idea where her prince was, but maybe it was better that way. So, if I made a fool of myself, she was the only witness, and not the two of them. But I hoped and I prayed that Felicity hadn’t said any bad things about me to her because for some reason, I wanted the princess to like me. I stopped in front of her and bent my knees, lowering my body into a curtsy as I tipped my head down in respect. “Good evening, Princess Adessa.”“Good evening, Luna Iris.” She greeted me back.“You know my name…” I mumbled as I stood up straight before her, clasping my hands together as I met her stare.“It is a beautiful name, and not easy to miss when they were introducing the guests.”I felt my cheeks burning at the simple compliment. I couldn’t believe I was standing before a princess and she was smiling at me. “How old are you?” She asked.“Twenty one.”“

  • THE SUBSTITUTE LUNA   Chapter 96

DRACO.We were placed in seats far from the Royal Couple, so there was no way I could present Iris to Princess Adessa personally. I was already in a bad mood the moment we were ushered to our seats, but I did my best not to show it to my date, as I didn’t want to spoil her night. And I was glad I was on my best behavior because the night turned out better. I rarely encountered royals or attended functions sponsored by the palace, but I can honestly say that nothing about this event or place excited me. But for Iris, everything was new to her, and her emotions were all over the place. The little bird beside me couldn’t stop blabbering about everything she was experiencing for the first time. Her excitement when she told me that the princess and her prince smiled at her, or that the King looked at her, was contagious. I couldn’t help smiling with her. But aside from her happiness, one thing was evident — she was prepared for tonight, more than what I expected of her.Iris was alread

  • THE SUBSTITUTE LUNA   Chapter 95

LUNA PRINCESS ADESSA.The lights beamed at us, and it snapped me back to the present. We had arrived at one of the massive gardens of the palace, which they had transformed into a wonderful, cozy setup. The first idea was more extravagant than this, almost akin to the reception for the wedding. But I wanted a laid-back dinner with the sky as our ceiling, so I had rejected that idea. All our guests were already standing when we were introduced. My father was the last to be announced.Once King Esaak was seated, Kael and I sat down, and so did my brothers who were in attendance. My lovely mother was not in attendance, as she would rather not cause any scene tonight. Up to this moment, we all had no idea what fate awaited her and she was concerned that the Guardians might use a big event like this to punish her. I knew she was still trying to communicate with them to ask them a favor to spare my wedding, as she wanted to be there. I had no idea if she had any success on that, as I had

  • THE SUBSTITUTE LUNA   Chapter 94

LUNA PRINCESS ADESSA. Luna of IronCrest Pack and Princess of Kingdom of Absalom.I didn’t like Draco. Never liked him from day one. I saw how he looked at my husband with disdain, and I personally experienced being disrespected by him. The only reason I invited him to our wedding was that Kael and I were willing to give him a chance to redeem himself. He apologized for the way he had treated my mate and me, and although I doubted whether he was really sincere, we were giving him the benefit of the doubt. The invitation for him was initially just for the actual wedding, but the moment I was informed that he requested his plus one to be replaced — dropping his Beta for a woman — I got curious. I wanted to see for myself what kind of game Draco was playing. I knew for a fact that the only reason he would parade this woman at my wedding was to speed up his request. The Alpha thought I could heal him from his infertility. I might be a powerful crossbreed between a Royal Wolf and a Guar

IRIS. I was still looking at my ring, mesmerized by it, when I noticed he had gone quiet.I tilted my head and saw that his face had turned serious. He then cupped my chin with his fingers. “Iris, I want you to promise me again that whenever you get upset, frustrated, or angry. You will close your eyes and you will tell me.”“You still haven’t explained that part to me.”“I will when I have more answers, but for now, I want you to trust me.”I nodded.“I meant it when I told you from day one that as long as you’re with me, I will keep you safe. But I need you to help me do that by trusting me. No one in this kingdom will protect you the way I would.”I kept nodding my head, overwhelmed by too many emotions. But he was right. He had never shown me any reason not to believe that he could protect me. —------------IRIS.We were ushered into one of the palace gardens, where the outdoor welcome dinner was being held. And the moment the guests who were already there came into view, he took
