IRIS.

I wasn’t done putting my clothes into my bag when Constantine called me to his office and asked me to sign the divorce papers.

I didn’t have time to read the whole document, but I read the part where our separation would take effect today. So I signed it.

“Do you know why he wants to buy me?” I asked Constantine as I placed the pen on top of the papers.

I told myself that as long as I could break away from my husband, the reason didn’t matter. But I still couldn’t fight the curiosity of wanting to know more.

“Alpha Draco has a brothel. My only guess is that he will throw you there.”

“A brothel?” My eyes widened.

“Yes,” Constantine chuckled wickedly before he cupped my chin and tilted my head to meet his gaze. “What were you expecting? That he’ll make you his Luna? You will end up as a broken woman passed around. I doubt if you can even walk after the first night. I heard his brothel is a big hit, and women hop from one customer to another in one night.”

I stared at him in disbelief, but I did my best not to show that the thought alone terrified me.

“But I can save you.” He added.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“Run away from him at the first chance that you get. I’m sure you remember how to reach the warehouse, right? Go there, and I will hide you from him. He doesn’t need to know you came back to me. I can hide you.”

“Why would I come back to you?” I asked him. I wanted to say all the reasons why I shouldn’t, but I was also sure he knew them.

“Why? Because I’m the better option between the two of us. When you run away from him, he will find you, unless I hide you. He would never think you would return to me.” He smiled at me warmly. That same smile that he gave me three years ago. The smile that made me trust him.

But I knew better now that behind that smile was evil waiting to strike.

“If you think life with me is hard, imagine having to be passed around with different men every night.” He was speaking like he cared about me.

“You began to pass me around too…” I told him.

“I learned my lesson, love. I promise I won’t do that again. Just make sure to come back to me.” He said softly as he leaned his head closer, and I knew he would kiss me.

I tilted my head to the side, and his lips ended on my cheek. Instead of pulling away or forcing me to face him, he gently brushed his lips against my skin. “Won’t you miss this, my love?”

“No…” I had no idea where I got the courage to say those words. Maybe because I knew I was no longer bound to him.

He let go of my chin harshly before a wicked laugh ripped past his throat. “You think you can act tough. Who do you think you are, Iris?”

“I will take my leave now,” I said, and I swiftly turned around, but before I could make the first step, a hand snaked around my wrist and pulled me back roughly.

Everything happened so fast, and the next thing I knew, I was pinned against the wall as his mouth crushed against mine. A whimper of defiance escaped my throat as I struggled to break free from his hold.

I had been in this position too many times, and I already knew what was coming next if I struggled, but I still never learned.

I kept kicking and ramming my hands onto his chest and face, hitting and clawing him wherever I could.  And just as I expected, he punched my stomach. A loud cry came out of me as tears poured down my cheeks before my body slid down against the wall. I became immobilized. I cried as he slowly ripped my shirt and pulled down my bra.

Then I heard an engine being turned off. Someone arrived, but it seemed he didn’t notice.

As if by magic, an invisible energy surged within me, and I found the strength to push him away just as he was about to capture my breast with his mouth.

He wasn’t expecting it, so he stumbled backward. I got up and kicked his face with all my might before I rushed toward the door.

I heard him cursing me, but I continued to run despite the pain in my stomach. I landed in the arms of the Alpha Draco.

I had no idea if what Constantine said about him was true, but it no longer mattered. All I knew was I needed to get away from this place, so I clung to him.

But then, seeing Alpha Draco and his temper terrified me, and it made me doubt my decision. What if Constantine was right? Life here was hell, but what if it would be so much worse with him?

Flashes of my life came running into my head.

Every new chapter kept getting worse. I was born in poverty, and I thought it was already bad, but when I moved to my father’s home, I realized my old life was better. Then I tried to get away and ended up with Constantine. And he was way worse than my father’s family.

What if moving to Alpha Draco would be the same thing? If what Constantine was telling me about the brothel was right, then I just plunged myself deeper into hell. I didn’t want that.

So, while everyone was busy—while Alpha Draco was pummeling Constantine’s face and his Beta was nowhere to be found—I slowly stepped back and turned around.

I walked out of the house as quietly as possible until I reached the grounds. I saw men looking at me, but it looked like they had no idea who I was, so I just kept walking.

The moment I was near the forest, I ran.

I had no idea where I would go. All I knew was that I didn’t want to be in hell anymore. I just wanted to be free from all these miseries.

I kept running with no direction.

Even if I had lived in this place for three years, I had never wandered off too deep into the forest. I was not allowed to. And I had already passed the area where I usually picked up my herbs, so I was no longer familiar with where I was heading.

The sun was already setting, and I knew soon it would be dark. By then, no one could spot me, especially Constantine. He had weak vision at night. But my only problem was the cold. The spring was in full bloom, but we still had chilly nights, especially for someone without a wolf like me.

I stopped and rested my hand on the tree, catching my breath as I looked around, checking where I was and in which direction I should go.

It didn’t take long before I heard paws thudding on the ground. The sound was coming closer.

A wolf.

“Please, please….” I mumbled as I began running again. I had no idea if the direction I chose would be my saving grace or would lead me back to the people who wanted to capture me. But I knew this time, despite my body wanting to give up, I would keep fighting.

I ran straight ahead until I saw a figure begin to form in the direction I was heading. It was too late to turn around as I was running at full speed, but I did slow down, planning to head in another direction. But when I saw who it was, my own feet decided on their own and eventually stopped.

Alpha Draco was sitting under a tree, munching on what looked like a small branch as he looked at me. He was naked, and with his knees pulled up and legs apart, I could see his manhood. But he didn’t seem bothered by it. Of course, I was sure being Alpha allowed him to be naked as much as he wanted, and no one would complain.

“Are you done running?” He asked in a bored tone.

But before I could answer him, I heard someone approaching. I looked around, and when I returned my gaze to where the Alpha was, he was already gone.

Did he leave me?

“There you are!” Some said in an annoyed tone. “Boss Constantine is already pissed off at you. Let’s go home!”

I stepped back and glared at Raul. “Don’t you dare touch me! I’m not coming with you!”

I abruptly turned around, ready to run away, when I collided with another body.

Gary gripped my arms before he laughed wickedly. “You still never learn, Iris. No matter how many times you try to run away, we will always find you.”

“Let me go!” I began ramming my hands onto his chest. His hold on me tightened as he and Raul laughed together.

“Maybe we should tell Boss we didn’t find her. And keep her somewhere. I’d been dying to fuck this woman...”

He was not able to finish his words when a loud growl erupted in the air. His hold on me loosened as he turned his body around, and I took advantage of it. I stepped back, ready to run, but my feet got stuck in my spot when I saw a black wolf up in the air. Like it just appeared out of nowhere and landed on Gary.

In the blink of an eye, the wolf’s mouth grabbed his head, tearing it apart from his neck.

A shrill shriek of terror ripped past my lips as Gary’s blood splattered on my face and the black wolf landed before me, clutching his head. It then let go of the head, letting it roll to the ground before it shifted into his human form.

The wolf became Alpha Draco, with blood on his mouth and running down his throat.

“Tell Constantine that if he sends another man to trail Iris, his head will be the next one to roll on the ground...” He said in a cold tone.

I could hear the heavy breathing behind me. “Yes, Alpha.”

“Take his head!”

“No, Alpha,” Raul begged. His voice sounded completely different from the arrogant man who always mocked me.

“I said, pick up his fucking head and give it to Constantine!” Alpha Draco growled.

“Alpha... please.”

“Pick it up, or there will be two heads on the ground...”

He was not done with his words yet when I heard a scrambling of feet and saw Raul on my side picking up Gary’s head. In no time, he was already running away.

I stayed frozen in my spot as tears fell from my eyes. I could taste Gary’s blood, but I dared not move, terrified his wrath would fall on me.

If I had thought I would run away earlier, I couldn’t anymore. I didn’t want to die yet.

The moment his gaze went back to me, I mustered all my courage to speak up. “How much do I need to pay you so you will let me go?” I asked in a slow, respectful tone.

“How much money do you have?”

“I have a small savings in my room. Almost two thousand.”

“I gave my land in exchange for you.” He said, frowning, as he crossed his arms across his chest. “I don’t think two thousand will cover even one percent of that.”

Sobs escaped my throat as my body began to tremble. “How many years will I have to work in your brothel before I can pay you? Before you let me go?”

“Brothel? What are you talking about? I don’t have a brothel, Iris.”

  • THE SUBSTITUTE LUNA   Chapter 147

Continuation of KING LEORIC’S POV from the Orebrus.I had no idea how long I fought them alongside my Raiders and my faes. I had no idea how many of my species had died trying to save our home. All I knew was that this was the end of it. With my aura dwindling and the forest covering my power and my body as I slumped on the earth, the Guardians were not able to track me this time. I could no longer feel them. They had left the Wicker Forest—burning and on the brink of destruction. And it was only a matter of time before my soul left my body. I was dying, but I didn’t want to use any power. The little that was left of me, I was saving so I could perform the last thing I needed to do. But I had no idea how long I could hold on. A sparkle came out before Eox appeared in front of me. “King Leoric.”“Where is she?” I asked, holding on to my consciousness, with one hand stopping the blood oozing from my heart. “They took her in…”“When she gives birth, take her and Princess Diallica b

  • THE SUBSTITUTE LUNA   Chapter 146

KING LEORIC’S POV from the Orebrus.Longest reigning Dark Fae King, Princess Diallica’s Grandfather. My kingdom was falling apart. I didn’t see this coming, and I could no longer stop it. A war was happening, and my only ally—the goblins—had already faltered. And I knew my forest was next.I shouldn’t have taken the side of the gargoyle, thinking that siding with the vile demons was the right move, that we could fight against the Lunar Guardians and their leagues. We used to be a strong force, until the necromancers, the nymphs, and other creatures that once were our allies turned their backs on us and betrayed us. And before I knew it, the vile demons retreated and holed up in the underworld, a place no one could breach—saving only themselves. So the goblins and we were left alone to fend for ourselves. And with the goblins gone, I was the remaining target.“Issha, the princess is already at the throne cove. I was left with no choice but to chain her up or she’ll fly away again.”

  • THE SUBSTITUTE LUNA   Chapter 145

DRACO.Iris nodded at me, her eyes full of worry and I knew she wanted us to hurry. I ignored the pain shooting in my arm as I pushed my body off the ground. I grabbed her hand and placed her behind me as we walked further, following the direction that Meridian gave us until we saw the old double oak door. That was the entrance to the Dark Fae’s palace. Iris walked ahead of me without removing her hand from my hold. Together, we reached the door that bore a symbol that looked like a leaf with five points pointing upward.Iris placed her hand on it and it didn’t take long before it glowed, and the door opened. It was dark, and ice-like smoke was coming out from the inside. Meridian had told us about this, so I knew it was useless to try to see what was inside, since nothing could really be seen. So instead, I snaked an arm around Iris’ waist and reminded her that we would step inside at the same time.“On three,” I said. After she nodded, I began counting. “One, two… three.”We steppe

  • THE SUBSTITUTE LUNA   Chapter 144

DRACO.Before we left Meridian’s home, I asked her why she was willing to help us when Eox was someone important to her. I could not deny that, after she told us about their past, I began to doubt whether she was really an ally or an enemy. So I didn’t stop myself from asking her about her intentions. She told us she wanted Princess Diallica to accept the destiny that was meant for her to save the dark faes. And to save them, she needed the Princess alive and to reach her full potential. If she became powerful, Eox had no choice but to step back and accept that the throne was never meant for him. I waited for Iris to open her mouth and say something—that she didn’t want that and she wanted to return to the human world but there was nothing. It seemed that in a matter of a few hours, she had changed her mind. And I was not sure if I was okay with that. “Did you ask her how we could leave this place?” I asked her once it was just the two of us. She nodded and began talking. I let o

DRACO. I held Iris’ hand as we walked down the stairs to the basement of Meridian’s house. I was preparing myself for the worst, but after a few minutes of staying there and with her busy scanning a book while talking with Iris, my chest began to calm down. But I still kept my guard up. I listened as Meridian taught her about manas and energies and where she could channel them. Then, she began the crash course on chants and magic. While Iris listened and watched intently as Meridian performed simple magic before her, I grabbed the piece of paper and pen that I saw nearby and wrote down what I heard and observed.I didn’t say Iris was dumb or that she wouldn’t remember what Meridian was teaching her, but with the surprised expression on her face, I wasn’t even sure if everything had sunk in. So I wanted to have a list of the chants and the movements Meridian was making, in case Iris needed them later. This was actually how I learned things. While my father kept telling me I should

IRIS.“Who are the enemies?” Draco asked again.“The Guardians of the Lunar Wolves…” she replied. “They are a myth,” Draco stated as my heart thundered. He couldn’t remember the part of his life where he met the Guardians, which I just recently found out when I met Princess Adessa. Adessa’s mother, Adelaine, was one of the Guardians. “And Dark Faes are a myth, too. But here you are, standing in front of two faes.” Meridian replied with her brows hiking up.“I don’t understand…” I mumbled. “I can’t say more. I wasn’t here when the Guardians were able to enter our forest because of a breached portal. They slaughtered your whole bloodline, except your mother.”“They let my mother live?”“No… Princess Cassiopea had been missing for many weeks before the attack. Some said she ran away, but many said the King hid her because he probably knew the Guardians were coming after them. No one knew, except Eox. And he never told a single soul about it. Not even me. So what we know about your mot
