That same night. The Tiger King's palace was crowded with demonic guests. The entire palace was lit by torches and blue fire. Today was _Night one Suro_. The night when the barrier between the human world and the spirit world was at its thinnest. The night when an oath could never be broken. Alina stood in the center of the main hall. She wore a new gown. No longer the ivory dress. This time it was blood red, embroidered with golden tiger motifs. Her hair was braided and adorned with tiger fangs and red flowers. Her heart pounded. Not from fear. From anger and anticipation. "Are you ready?" Draven's voice came from behind her. In truth, Alina was still nervous and afraid. But for the sake of avenging her dignity, she was willing to go through with the marriage to the Tiger King. Draven wore black armor with a red cloak. His golden eyes looked sharper tonight. Because of the Blood Moon above. Even though Draven was half demon, half human, he was honestly a handsome man. "I am ready," Alina answered softly. Her voice no longer trembled. "I want them to see. I want the entire forest to know who I am now." Draven walked toward her and held out his hand. "Then starting tonight, you are no longer Alina from the village. You are Alina, Queen of the Tiger Clan. Bound to me through blood and oath," Draven said. "The first part of the ritual is that you must cut your palm, to merge our blood." "Come, follow me," Draven said as he took Alina's hand. The entire hall was filled with hundreds of tiger warriors. They all knelt as Alina and Draven walked to the stone altar in the center. An old shaman stepped forward. In his hands were a silver dagger and a bowl made of bone. "Tonight, under Satu Suro and the Blood Moon," the shaman said in a loud voice. "Two souls will be bound. One human. One king. This bond will not break until death." The shaman cut Draven's palm first. Blood dripped into the bowl. Then he cut Alina's palm. Alina hissed in pain, but she didn't pull her hand away. Draven grasped Alina's hand. He pressed their bleeding palms together. "Say it," Draven whispered to Alina. Alina looked into his eyes. Then she looked at all the warriors watching her. "I, Alina, accept this bond. I accept Draven as my King and my mate. I accept his strength, his protection, and his vengeance." Her voice echoed throughout the hall. "And in return, I give my loyalty, my body, and my hatred to the King." Alina said firmly. Draven smiled, revealing his fangs. "And I, Draven, King of the Tiger Clan, accept you as my Queen. No one will hurt you. No one will touch you. Anyone who does will face my wrath." The shaman poured their mixed blood onto the altar. Suddenly the torches burned higher. The ground shook. The roar of tigers sounded from outside the palace, answered by hundreds of other roars. "It is done," said the shaman. "The bond is sealed." All the warriors roared together. "QUEEN! QUEEN! QUEEN!" Alina felt something hot flow through her veins. Stronger. Faster. Her senses became sharper. She could smell the scent of her enemies' fear from far away. Draven leaned down and whispered in Alina's ear. "Do you feel it? This is our bond. From now on, my strength is your strength." Alina nodded. Then she raised her blood-stained hand high. "Tonight we feast," she said. Her voice was cold. "And tomorrow... we hunt." The entire palace erupted in cheers. Music began to play. Food and wine were served. But Alina's eyes were not on the celebration. Her eyes were fixed on the direction of the village. On Raka. The Blood Moon bore witness to how much Alina had suffered. _To Be Continued_The Skull Cave is fucking freezing. Not from the wind. But from the ground. From the stones that have drunk too much blood. From the pond in the middle with black water. At the bottom there’s a chest. It’s full of powder. One spark and this whole place blows. Including me.I’m the leader now. Of whatever’s left of the Wolves. Guiding the other beasts to join us. Foxes. Boars. Whatever’s desperate enough. There’s a leather map in front of me. Behind me, 7 people. The last Wolves who still follow me. Hired guns. Cowards. Just like me.It’s been 5 days since I sent Sera to poison the eastern river of the Tigers.“No word from Sera yet, Sir,” Garon said. His iron hand _clank clank_ every time he moved.I threw my cup at the wall. _Crash_.“Coward! He’s probably dead. Caught!”“Not necessarily, Sir,” someone else said. “Maybe he’s waiting for night.”I went quiet. My fingers drummed on the hilt of my knife.Draven.That name is poison.5 days ago I ran from the battlefield. Ran when I saw
This damn underground cage. Damp. Cold. And the smell... the smell of dried blood, wet dirt, and the smell of people who’ve already given up. Sera was hanging. Both wrists chained up high, so only the tips of his feet touched the ground. The other three were in the corner. Their muzzles gagged with leather so they couldn’t scream or bite their own tongues. Six hours. Six hours I’d been sitting here, listening to the rain outside that just wouldn’t quit. The door creaked open. Bayu walked in. The torch in his hand was shaking. His face was still wrapped in bandages. There were brown stains on his cheek. "The others talked, Your Majesty," he said. His breath was heavy. "The fox. Coward. He cracked first. Said their base is at Skull Cave. Northwest. A day’s walk from here." I nodded. My throat was dry. "And Sera?" Bayu shook his head. "Stone. Hasn’t said a word. Just keeps grinning." Alina had been beside me the whole time. Not sitting. Not leaning. Her eyes never left Sera for
The smell of blood was still stuck in my nose.It had been 5 days since that war. 5 days since Raka ran. The tiger den was quiet. Too quiet.I sat on a flat rock in front of the main tent. In my hand was a report from Bayu. Scratches on a piece of bark. `3 buried. 4 seriously wounded stable. Water in the eastern river tastes strange.`Strange.Alina came out of the tent. Her steps were still limping, but her back was straight again. Her face was pale. The fever only broke last night. "What does it say?" she asked. Her voice was still hoarse."The water in the eastern river tastes bitter," I answered. I crumpled the bark in my hand. "The healer said 2 tiger cubs threw up after drinking this morning."Alina tensed immediately. "Poison.""I was thinking the same."Silence. Only the sound of wind through the leaves."This is Raka’s doing," Alina whispered. Her eyes lit up. "Only 5 days as king, and he’s already playing dirty."I stood up. My ribs still hurt if I moved too fast. But
The rain wouldn’t stop.I ran. Didn’t look back.Behind me there were only corpses. The King’s corpse. The pack’s corpses. The corpse of my own pride.Mud splattered on my face with every step. Thorns tore at my calves until they bled. But I couldn’t stop. Stopping meant dying. Same as them."RAKA!"The Wolf King’s last roar still echoed in my head, so loud it hurt my eardrums. "TRAITOR!"Coward. Yeah, I’m a coward. But a coward who’s still breathing.I don’t know how long. Felt like a whole day. Lungs burning, legs shaking, breath about to give out. Finally my body gave out too. I collapsed under a huge tree with roots sticking out like claws. Panting. There was blood on my palms. Didn’t know whose. From far away, a howl. Long. Dragging.A mourning howl. It meant their king was dead.I laughed instead. My voice cracked. "Safe travels, my Lord," I muttered into the dark. "Thanks for teaching me one thing."How to survive. By being the most ruthless. That night I didn’t close my eyes a
Dawn hadn't come yet. There was only darkness.Thick darkness. The kind that made my eyes ache from forcing them to stay open.I stood at the edge of the ravine. Wind rose from below, carrying the smell of wet dirt and... wolves.A lot of them.Behind me, 12 tiger warriors crouched behind rocks. Weapons in hand. Holding their breath.Next to me, Alina. She wasn’t wearing armor. Just a plain black shirt, cloth pants, and a dagger at her waist.I’d changed the bandage on her shoulder 2 hours ago. White. Tight. But I knew the wound underneath was still throbbing with every breath she took."Ready?" I whispered. She didn’t look at me. Her eyes were locked straight ahead, into the dark forest."Been ready for 3 days," she answered. Her voice was cold. No tremor.Bayu was on my left. He held up 3 fingers. The signal. 3 more minutes.I closed my eyes. Just once. To gather everything. The rage. The pain. The emptiness of the last 3 nights. When I opened them again, there was only calculation
The rain wouldn’t stop. Not the normal kind. This was the kind of rain that crawled into your bones, turned the earth to mud, and made the smell of blood ten times worse.I was perched on the highest branch by the river. Twenty meters up. From here I could see everything. The wind carried the stench up to me. A stench that had been stuck in my nose for three nights straight.Three nights. Three nights since I’d slept more than ten minutes at a time. Three nights since I wrapped the last bandage around Alina’s shoulder. Three nights since I watched her lie there, biting back pain, while I bit my own lip so hard I tasted iron just to keep from screaming. My eyes burned. My head felt heavy. But one second of carelessness and we were all dead.Below, by the riverbank, were four young wolves. You could see their ribs. Their fur was matted. Their eyes were dull. These weren’t warriors. These were kids forced to hunt because the pack was already starving.Bait. Perfect bait.My
