In the middle of the night, Roman was stirred awake by muffled sounds. At first, he thought he was imagining things—soft whispers, low gasps. Then he heard it clearly.

"Please… don’t hurt her…"

"I’m sorry… I never thought… blood... I should wipe it,"

He sat up, his eyes narrowing in the darkness. The voice was Vera’s, strained and trembling. Her body twisted beneath the sheets, jerking as if trying to escape something only she could see.

Roman’s expression hardened. This wasn’t just a nightmare—this was a memory. A trauma buried so deep it haunted her sleep.

He watched her silently. The muscles in her arms were tense, her fists clenched. Beads of sweat rolled down her forehead, and her breathing was uneven. Her legs kicked suddenly, and she whimpered again, curling into herself.

Then she woke up with a sudden gasp, sitting halfway up. Her chest was heaving, her skin damp with sweat, and her hands were visibly trembling. Her wide eyes darted around the room until they landed on Roman.

"Make a drink for me," Roman’s command hung in the air like a challenge, and Vera froze. Her heart pounded so loudly that she was certain he could hear it. She quietly walked towards the station, looked over her shoulder, and saw him still seated in the dim lamplight, watching her every move.Shock flashed across her face. He had sounded so calm, and casual, but the quiet force behind his words was unmistakable. She could feel his gaze drilling into her back, drawing out her uncertainty and amplifying it until she was painfully aware of every tremble in her limbs. He rose, and the distance between them closed in two long strides. He stood inches from her now; she could see the fine hairs on his forearm, the slow rise and fall of his chest. His presence filled the room entirely.Without saying anything, Roman stepped forward and took the whiskey bottle from her hand. His fingers brushed against hers—just for a second—but it was enough to make her breath hitch. Her eyes lifted to his fa

Roman and Vera stepped inside the beach house. It was quiet, the only sound being the soft crash of waves just beyond the walls. The house was divided—one half for them, the other given to Dimitry and Leila. They walked in without a word. Roman locked the door behind them while Vera headed straight to the bedroom. She didn’t expect conversation, not with how things were between them.Once inside, she went to the closet and quietly changed into something comfortable. A silk nightie shrugged to cover her body—nothing that could hint at seduction or intimacy, not that it ever mattered. When she came back to bed, Roman was nowhere in sight. The room was empty. Tonight he had decided to leave her alone. She sighed and climbed into bed, pulling the blanket up around her. The sheets felt cold. This was how she usually slept anyway—alone, even in marriage. To the outside world, they might have looked like a couple. They’d play their roles well, sit close when needed, and smile just enough to

The sand was cool beneath their feet as Roman and Dimitry stepped down onto the beach. The sky had deepened with the blush of sunset fading along the horizon. Waves lapped gently at the shore making the evening feel almost surreal—like the world had slowed down just for them. Leila spotted them first.“Dimitry!” she called. He barely had a chance to respond before she was at his side, slipping her fingers through his and tugging gently. “Take off your shoes,” she said with a playful grin. “You’re on a beach, not in a boardroom.”Dimitry raised an amused brow, but he let her pull him closer to the water’s edge. She crouched, helping him unlace his shoes, laughing when he rolled his eyes but didn’t protest. A moment later, he was barefoot beside her, the surf kissing their toes as they walked along the wet sand. From a few steps behind, Vera watched them with a thin smile. The affection between her friend and Dimitry was so unguarded, so natural. For once, Leila looked genuinely at pea

The drive to the beach house was long but quiet. Roman barely spoke, lost in his thoughts, his eyes occasionally drifting to the sea that began to appear in the distance. The closer they got, the more the city noise faded behind them, replaced by the rhythm of waves and salt-kissed air.The property was massive—more of a private estate than a beach house, with high walls, steel gates, and a long driveway that opened up to a sleek modern structure facing the water. Roman had already arranged for the security team to arrive in advance, and by the time his car rolled to a stop, men were stationed along the perimeter. Discreet, professional. Dimitry pulled in a few minutes later with his own convoy. Roman gave him a single nod.Inside the house, the atmosphere was lighter.Leila rushed in, her eyes lighting up the moment she saw Vera. They spent the next hour settling in. Rooms were assigned, bags unpacked, and the staff began preparing the kitchen. Leila moved around like she owned the

Vera stood in the middle of her room, frowning at the open suitcase sprawled across her bed. Her fingers hovered over a sarong, then moved to a white summer dress, then to a folded bikini top—only to drop them all back in frustration. What do you even pack when you’re going to the beach with a man who barely tolerates you, and two people who are in love? she thought bitterly. The soft crash of ocean waves played in her mind, taunting her with a serenity she hadn’t earned yet. She sighed, pushing a few sundresses, a scarf, sandals, and a book into the suitcase. She added the bikini and a thin wrap in a moment of last-minute decision, then zipped the bag shut, hoping she hadn’t forgotten something important.Just as she lowered the suitcase beside the bed, the door creaked open without a knock. Roman stepped in, dressed in a simple black shirt with sleeves rolled up, his watch glinting against his wrist.“We’re leaving in five,” he said plainly.Vera straightened. “Okay,” she said softl

The dinner table was warm with laughter and flickers of shared stories. As the plates were passed around and wine glasses refilled, the atmosphere turned comfortably intimate. Dimitry took a bite of the stuffed zucchini and hummed in approval. “This... this is divine. Whoever made this has my heart tonight.”Vera’s eyes flicked up as Leila leaned closer and whispered with a playful grin, “Is this Nonna’s recipe? The one you used to sneak into your lunchbox when you didn’t want to share?”Vera stifled a chuckle. “I had to survive high school somehow.”The food brought back a familiar comfort. The flavors, the spices—each bite a quiet echo of simpler, lost times. For a brief moment, Vera let herself enjoy it.After dinner, dessert—light tiramisu and fresh berries—was served, and they all drifted to the backyard. The pool shimmered gently under the glow of soft garden lights. A breeze curled through the air, stirring Vera’s dress and the leaves above them. The night had draped itself in
