LIAM'S POV

The knock came again this time around and it was sharper, impatient, louder this time.

Alira’s eyes widened.

“Hide.” I whispered urgently.

“Liam….”

“Now, Alira!”

She hesitated for a heartbeat before rushing into the hallway.

I waited until I heard the quiet click of the guest room door before exhaling and forcing myself to look calm.

I straightened my shirt, ran a hand through my hair, and opened the door.

And there he was.

Alec.

He looked different…different in a sense that he looked angry, restless, his suit slightly wrinkled like he hadn’t slept all night.

Rain clung to his shoulders, and his expression screamed frustration.

“Liam,” he said, brushing past me before I could respond.

“We need to talk.”

I shut the door slowly, watching him pace around my living room.

His eyes darted across the place, assessing everything, restless like a man searching for something.

“What brings you here at this hour?” I asked coolly.

He ran a hand through his hair.

“It’s Alira,” he sa

  • THE WIDOW WHO NEVER WAS   CHAPTER FORTY THREE

ALIRA'S POV The silence after Liam’s confession pressed against my chest like a weight and the funniest part of everything was that he wouldn’t even look at me.“I almost committed murder,” he’d said. For a long moment, I simply watched him…his tense shoulders, the tremor he tried to hide in his hands, the shame tightening his jaw. He expected me to panic or to pull away or to even gasp. But something inside me stayed calm.Because I already knew the kind of man Alec was.If Alec was involved in this story, then the truth was already crooked.I took a slow breath. “Liam,” I said quietly, “tell me everything…Properly.”His head lifted slightly, as if he wasn’t expecting that. His eyes searched my face, checking for fear…but there was none.He exhaled shakily and sat down. I followed, keeping a safe distance, but close enough for him to feel listened to.“It was… about three years ago,” he began. “A guy I trusted. A friend, actually. His name was Marco…we invested in something toge

  • THE WIDOW WHO NEVER WAS   CHAPTER FORTY ONE

ALIRA'S POV The soft hum of the rain was the first thing I heard when I woke up.It wasn’t violent anymore, just quiet, steady, like the world was trying to wash away what happened last night. But nothing could. Not the storm, not the sunrise, not even time.I blinked, staring at the ceiling for a few seconds before I dared to move. My body felt heavy, like every nerve remembered what it shouldn’t.The faint scent of Liam lingered in the air soap, cedar, and something darker. My fingers clenched the sheet. The images from last night came rushing back in flashes…the rain, his hands, the way he said my name like it was both a question and a promise. And then his words…“That’s the problem, Alira. I do.”My heart ached just remembering it.I sat up slowly. The towel he had wrapped around me lay crumpled on the floor. My dress was still damp… hung neatly on the chair across the room. Liam must have done that…He always did things quietly, like he didn’t want to admit he cared.I looked

  • THE WIDOW WHO NEVER WAS   CHAPTER FORTY

LIAM'S POV The sound of knocking pulled me out of my thoughts. At first, I ignored it, thinking maybe it was the rain hitting the door but then it came again soft, desperate, uneven. It was late, and after everything with Betsy, the last thing I wanted was another disturbance. I moved toward the door, half-expecting to see her again. But when I opened it, my breath caught. There she was.Alira.Standing in the pouring rain, her hair plastered to her face, her dress soaked through, clinging to her body like a second skin. Her eyes… God, those eyes…they were full of something I couldn’t read. “Alira?” I whispered, disbelief heavy in my voice. She didn’t speak at first. She just stood there, breathing hard, rain running down her cheeks like tears.“Why are you…” I started, but stopped. Without thinking, I reached out and grabbed her hand, pulling her inside. The moment her cold fingers touched mine, my pulse jumped. She shivered as I shut the door behind her. Water dripped from her

  • THE WIDOW WHO NEVER WAS   CHAPTER THIRTY NINE

ALIRA'S POV Since the moment Alec said he was going to borrow some money for our wedding, I knew something didn’t add up about him.For weeks, I’d tried to ignore the feeling, to believe that maybe my mind was just overthinking things again but deep down, I knew the truth… I’d been with Alec once before in another life…. I’d seen how good he was at pretending. And now, it felt like history was repeating itself. He claimed to be struggling… said his company was running low on funds, that he needed some help until things picked up again but the man I knew from before wasn’t the kind to go broke. He was greedy, yes, manipulative, yes, but never poor.In my last life, I didn’t see it until it was too late.He had accounts, properties, and investments I didn’t even know existed all hidden behind fake names and other people’s hands.I had died not realizing how much he had stolen from me.Not this time. This time, I was going to find out everything. That morning, I sat in my office, lapto

  • THE WIDOW WHO NEVER WAS   CHAPTER THIRTY EIGHT

LIAM'S POVI wanted her and I wanted Alira so badly that it hurt. The moment she left, silence filled the house. It wasn’t just quiet but it was haunting. Her scent still lingered in the air, soft and warm, like vanilla mixed with danger. I could still taste her on my lips, the ghost of that kiss that refused to fade.I ran a hand through my hair, pacing back and forth in the living room.“What the hell did you just do, Liam?” I muttered to myself. That kiss wasn’t planned. It wasn’t supposed to happen but when her eyes looked into mine, it was full of unspoken words and I lost control. Every wall I built crumbled and every reason I had to stay away from her disappeared. Now she was gone, and I was standing here, burning from the inside out.I tried to distract myself as I picked up a glass, poured some whiskey, and took a long sip but it didn’t help. I could still feel her breath against my neck and my pulse refused to calm. My body wanted her but my mind screamed that I shoul
