**Sam's POV**

I don't want to go anywhere.

Especially not some foreign country with a man who took lives the way other men played cards, easy, without thinking twice, already moving on to the next hand before the last one finished, just like the way he'd pulled me into his world and never once left the door unlocked behind him. He kept me in it and threw the key somewhere I'd never find it.

We'd been in the sky for hours by the time the light outside the window finally gave up and went dark

  • THE WIFE THEY BURIED    **Chapter Twenty-Four: White headstone**

*Sam's POV* Sleep had taken me somewhere I hadn't agreed to go. One moment was been sitting on the cold stone bench in the garden, arms wrapped around myself, too afraid to walk back into the room I was expected to share with him. And the next thing, it's morning again, the light spilled across the grass, a heavy blanket draped over my shoulders, a cup of coffee sitting on the low table beside me, still faintly warm at the edges. Someone had found me in the dark and cared for me while I was asleep. The blanket slid down my arms as I sat up. Cold air bit at my throat, sharp and clean, as my body ached from the angle I'd slept in, though the fear that had kept me out here all night sat even heavier now that the sun had caught up to it. Some movements near the house suddenly pulled my eyes toward the side stairs — two maids climbing them fast, one with a long garment bag draped over both arms, the other carrying a pair of shoes by their heels. They vanished through the door tha

*Sam's POV* "No." The word left my mouth before I could stop it, before I'd even finished deciding I meant it. He went completely still, and the air in the room seemed to tighten around both of us, pulled taut like something about to snap. "What did you just say?" he asked, each word set down deliberately, like giving me one chance to take it back. I forced my chin higher even though my pulse was hammering against my throat. "I reject it. I… don't… want anything to do with a man whose hands are that dirty. And I will not fake intimacy with you. Not more of it. Not any of it." "Brave of you," he said, low, testing the word as if he wasn't sure yet whether it was a compliment or a warning. I swallowed hard, my fear sitting sharp under my ribs, but I refused to look away from him. "I have rights in this arrangement," I said, steadier now. "So no. I will not stand beside you smiling like some devoted wife while everyone watches." He stepped closer, and the space between us shrank

  • THE WIFE THEY BURIED    **Chapter Twenty-Two**

**Sam's POV** I pushed myself upright, and my bare feet met the cold floor. For a moment I simply stood there, one hand braced against the mattress, waiting for the room to stop tilting. That was when my eyes dropped to the sheets. A dark stain across the white linen in uneven patches. For a single, panicked heartbeat I thought the worst. Then the truth arrived, quiet and ordinary and somehow more humiliating than any other possibility. The foreign soreness I'd woken to wasn't what my half-asleep mind had tried to invent. It was only the start of my cycle. My body had simply kept its own rhythm while the rest of me had been too broken to notice. Goodness. What had I even been thinking. Relief washed through me, followed immediately by a hot wave of embarrassment. I stepped away from the bed, my legs still unsteady, and spotted a folded towel draped over the arm of a chair. I took it and crossed the room without letting myself wonder how I'd ended up here, or who had changed me ou

I lost count somewhere after the third hour, staring at nothing, my mind circling the same handful of thoughts until they wore grooves into themselves. The Salvatores, who would wake tomorrow to a family member gone and a story already built to explain it away. And Adrian… what does he actually want from me, underneath the contract, underneath the ring, underneath every careful, deliberate thing he did with his hands whenever he touched me like he owned the right to. It's been a month now.

  • THE WIFE THEY BURIED    **Chapter Twenty: He is worse**

**Sam's POV** Rachel's eyes were still open. That was the thing I couldn't stop looking at. Not the blood, not the hole at her temple, but her eyes. It was open, fixed on a spot on the ceiling like she'd seen something up there worth staring at forever. One second ago, she was alive, angry, breathing, pointing a gun at me. The next she was… gone. The phone she had snatched from me was still clutched in her lifeless fingers, the screen cracked now, smeared with red. Tears slid down my face, slow and silent at first, then faster. I remained frozen, staring, while the memory of the last few minutes crashed over me in jagged pieces: I had come for the phone. That was all. Rachel hadn’t gone to the gathering. She caught me with my hand inside the cabinet. Her eyes had narrowed the moment she saw what I held. “I know what’s on that phone,” she had said, voice low and dangerous. “I don't know why you want it, but you have to give it back to me.” She had ripped it from my grasp durin

  • THE WIFE THEY BURIED    **Chapter Nineteen**

**Adrian's POV** I stood at the window of my study, one hand braced against the frame, watching Sam cross the courtyard below. Head down, arms folded tight against the evening chill, moving fast enough that I could tell she was bothered by something, without needing to ask who. Behind me, the study door creaked open. Theo stepped in, a set of keys held out in one hand. "Jet's ready for takeoff by dusk." "Good. Give these to Rosa. She runs the properties while I'm gone." "Sure, boss." A pause. "I think it's that time of the year again." I finally turned. "You say that every year like it surprises you." "It surprises me every year that you still go." "It's not a matter of wanting to." I crossed to the desk “You know that better than anyone." Yes. The one week I get to sit in the same room as my whole family, all at once, without a body between us. Family. Honor. Loyalty. Three words carved into the foundation of everything I was raised to be. As the
