I woke up in Bella's guest room and just chilled in bed for like ten minutes. I was listening to my daughter getting ready for her day. I could hear Emma through the walls, chattering to herself about her outfit, humming some song I didn't know, and asking her mom what she wanted for breakfast. She was serious about it, like only five-year-olds can be.

It was the best sound ever.

"Daddy?" Emma called from the hall, followed by a little knock. "Are you awake? Mommy said not to bother you, but do you like pancakes or waffles better?"

I opened the door, and there she was. Pink dress with tiny dinos, hair clipped back with butterfly thingies. She had a crayon drawing in her hand.

"Morning, sweetie," I said, kneeling down. "I love both pancakes AND waffles. What about you?"

"Both!" she said, super proud. "Just not at the same time 'cause that's too much breakfast! I made a list so you know what we do every day."

She gave me the paper, and my heart kind of hurt. It was a five-year-old's handwriting with stuff like: "Reading after food," "Learning games before midday," "Art in the afternoon," "Stories when you're going to sleep."

"This is, um, really organized," I said, looking at her art. "Did you do this just for me?"

Emma nodded, like it was serious business. "Mommy says I'm... pre-co-cious? It means I think a lot. I wanted to make sure you knew how to, like, take care of me right."

The way she said it just got to me. My daughter was teaching me how to be her dad because she never had one around to learn from.

"Emma, can I tell you something?" I asked, plopping down on the floor.

"Yeah!"

"I don't know much about being a dad yet, but I wanna learn. If I mess up or forget something, will you help me out?"

Her face lit up like crazy. "Really? I can teach you daddy stuff?"

"I'd be so happy if you did."

Emma hugged me tight. It was the kind of hug that made you get why people were all about kids. "This is gonna be SO fun! I have tons of daddy things to show you!"

Breakfast was like a lesson in itself. Emma was really into the pancake-to-syrup thing, and she *had* to cut her own fruit to practice knife skills. Then she just went on and on about the weather, her school project about families, all that stuff.

"We don't have a lot of family stuff yet," she said, carefully making a spiral with her syrup. "It was just me, Mommy, and Uncle Lucas before. But now we can make new things! Did your family do stuff when you were little?"

I thought about my family. My parents thought dinner was like a business thing, and holidays were just for meeting people. "Not really," I said. "My parents were always working."

Emma frowned. "That sounds bleh. Were you sad when you were little?"

She just came right out with it. "Sometimes," I said. "But now I get to do fun things with you, so it's okay from now on."

"Yay!" Emma said. "I have tons of ideas. We can do pancakes on Saturday, special bedtime stories, and maybe learn a new language? I wanna learn Italian because that's where Nonna Elena is from."

Nonna Elena. My daughter was part of a whole thing I had missed out on. The Romano family, Italian, everything.

"I'd love to learn Italian," I said. "What else do you wanna do?"

Emma pulled out another paper. Where did she even get these? This one had even MORE drawings. "I made a list of daddy-daughter stuff on Mommy's tablet."

I looked at the list. It was pretty intense. "Go to museums," "Build stuff together," "Cook dinner for Mommy," "Learn chess," "Visit your work," and of course, "Ice cream!"

"You, like, *researched* daddy-daughter things?" I asked.

"I looked up 'things to do with daddy' and picked the ones most fun and educational." Emma smiled big. "I also watched YouTube to learn how to play games right."

My daughter had been getting ready to train me! She'd been doing research on our relationship!

"Emma, you are amazing," I said, meaning it.

"Thanks! Mommy says I get my smarts from you, but I get my feelings from her. I know how people feel," she says.

The way she just talked about where she got her genes from, it just hit me how much she had thought about meeting me.

"Speaking of feelings," I said, "how do you feel about me being here? Really?"

Emma put down her fork and got super serious. "I feel happy and scared and excited and worried, all at once. Is that okay?"

"Totally. I feel the same way."

"You do?" She looked surprised that grown-ups could feel stuff too.

"I'm happy 'cause I get to know you, excited 'cause you're awesome, scared I'll mess up, and worried 'cause..." I paused. "Because I know Mommy is still mad at me, and I don't want that to mess things up."

Emma nodded, like she already knew. "Mommy gets a look when someone says your name. Like she's thinking about something sad and mad."

Woah. My five-year-old was dropping truth bombs. "You've noticed that?"

"Since I asked about you. Mommy answers, but her voice gets weird. Like she's trying not to break something."

God. Emma was reading her mom like a pro.

"Emma, do you know *why* Mommy feels sad and mad about me?"

She nodded. "'Cause you hurt her super bad when I was a baby, and then you left. It was bad, because Mommy doesn't usually stay mad. She says it's like rocks in your backpack."

My daughter was wise. She'd been figuring out our family stuff, and she wasn't wrong.

"You're right, I hurt Mommy," I said. "I messed up, and it sucks."

"Are you going to hurt her again?" Emma asked.

"I will try super hard not to. But Emma, sometimes grown-ups hurt each other even when they don't mean to. We need to say sorry."

Emma thought about it. "And promise you won't leave again? Even if Mommy's mad?"

That hit me hard. Her biggest fear was me leaving.

A tiny whimper from Emma's room jolted me awake around 2 AM. I lay there for a second, hoping she'd just roll over and go back to sleep. But then I heard it again—a scared little cry that made me bolt out of bed in my pajamas.I found Emma sitting up, all sweaty, clutching her dolphin toy. Her eyes were huge and scared in the nightlight glow."Mommy," she whispered, reaching for me with shaky hands. "The sad lady was in my dream again."My heart just squeezed. I pulled her close, feeling her little body tremble. "It was just a dream, sweetie. You're okay.""But she was trying to take me away from you and Daddy," Emma said into my shoulder. "She said I belonged with her instead."That gave me the creeps. Even in her dreams, Sophia was messing with my kid, planting doubts in her head."That's not true, honey. You belong with us, and that's that."Bare feet padding down the hall meant Mikel was here. He stood in the doorway in his pajama pants and t-shirt, hair all messed up, but his eye

The mood in Lucas's firm's security briefing room felt like a wartime strategy session. Emma was safe at the estate with Elena, happily coloring, thinking it was a fun sleepover with her great-grandma. Meanwhile, Mikel and I were staring at some pretty disturbing evidence on the table."She's been watching you for three weeks," Detective Sarah Martinez said, pointing to surveillance photos that made my skin crawl. "We found these on Sophia Chen's devices, along with logs of your family's routines."Looking at the photos of Emma leaving school, Mikel at the store, and me grabbing coffee on Tuesdays, I felt exposed. It was like our private moments were being studied under a microscope."How did she get so close without us noticing?" Mikel asked, his voice dangerously low."She's been careful—using different cars, wearing wigs, using long-distance lenses." Detective Martinez pulled out another folder. "But today's incident at the school gave us a reason to search her place. What we found

The call came at 2:43 PM. I was in my office, going over those boring reports. Maya sounded freaked out but was trying to keep it together."Bella, it's Westwood Academy. Something happened to Emma."My stomach dropped. "What happened?""Some woman tried to get to her during playtime. Security stopped her, but Emma's asking for you."I already had my keys and jacket. "Call Mikel, tell him to meet me there, ASAP.""He's already on his way."That drive to Emma's school felt like forever. Traffic was awful, and I kept thinking of the worst things that could happen. Someone trying to grab my kid? After Thomas's threats, and us finding out we were being watched, it was like someone actually got to Emma. When I got to Westwood, Mikel was already there. I found him in the principal's office, talking to Mrs. Henderson. He looked pretty shaken, but he was trying to stay calm."Mommy!" Emma ran at me the second I walked in and hugged me super tight.I knelt down, checking her over. "You okay, s

  • THE WIFE WHO STOLE HIS HEART   Chapter 34: The Next Move

A silver Mercedes rolled into the Marriott's parking garage downtown right at 3 PM – exactly when Thomas Romano wanted. Sophia Chen was behind the wheel, a little shaky, watching the older guy get out of a black car a few spaces down.Thomas looked every bit the big-shot businessman at 68. Perfect silver hair, an expensive suit hiding how frail he was getting, and a gold watch catching the light. But Sophia knew how to read the coldness in his eyes – so different from Elena's warm ones."You look awful," he said as they sat down in a quiet corner of the hotel restaurant. "When did you last sleep?""Kind of hard when your life's falling apart," Sophia shot back, stirring sugar into coffee she didn't even want. "They had breakfast together this morning. All three of them. Like some perfect family."Thomas didn't react much, but Sophia saw his eyes tighten a bit. "Tell me about it.""Mikel made pancakes. Dolphin-shaped for the kid. Bella laughed – actually laughed – at something he said.

  • THE WIFE WHO STOLE HIS HEART   Chapter 33: Morning Routines

The smell of coffee woke me up early at 6:15 AM, even though the machine was set for 6:30. I stayed in bed for a bit, hearing quiet sounds from downstairs – cabinets opening, the fridge humming, someone moving around.Mikel.The thought made my stomach flip in a way I wasn't ready to think about. He was up making coffee, probably trying to help with Emma's morning routine without me even asking. My phone buzzed. Another text from a weird number. I knew the drill by now. Any happy moment always brought on a new wave of creepy messages.*Aww, cute morning. He's trying so hard to be the perfect husband again. Too bad you know what he can really do.*I trashed it without reading more. Sophia was getting sneakier, trying to mess with me. She wasn't just making threats anymore; she was trying to make me doubt every good thing with Mikel. But I wasn't going to let her ruin this morning.I found him in the kitchen, already dressed, hair wet from the shower. He was staring into the fridge like

  • THE WIFE WHO STOLE HIS HEART   Chapter 32: Family Dinner

Garlic and herbs scented the kitchen as I stirred the sauce. Outside, I watched Mikel help Emma build a fairy house out of leaves. Their laughter floated in, and for a second, it felt like the past five years were just a nightmare.Even though I loved the scene, I couldn't shake the feeling of being watched. The creepy messages hadn't stopped since Mikel moved into the guest house. If anything, they were worse, like our happiness was driving someone nuts."Mommy, Daddy says dinner smells amazing!" Emma yelled, bursting in, her face red from the cold air."Oh, does he?" I smiled, hugging her. "And what do you think?""It smells like home," she said, hitting me right in the heart.Mikel came in, shaking leaves off his sweater. "Sorry, I got her a little excited. We found the perfect spot for the fairy house.""It's by the big oak tree," Emma said importantly. "Daddy says fairies are like old trees 'cause they have more stories."I looked at Mikel, seeing the same wonder I felt. These we
