Emma's question just hung there, heavy and loaded. Her eyes, so much like Bella's, searched between her parents, and she had this way of looking at you that made her seem way older than five.

"Are the people on TV saying bad stuff 'cause Daddy made Mommy cry a long time ago?" she asked.

Mikel went pale, but I tried to keep my voice steady. Emma deserved an honest answer, even if it was complicated.

"Some of them might be thinking that, yeah," I said carefully. "Sometimes when people make mistakes and hurt someone they love, other people judge them for it, even years later."

"But people can change," Emma stated, like she was explaining something obvious. "Like how I used to be scared of the dark, but now I'm not. Daddy changed too, right?"

"Right," Mikel said quietly, his voice thick.

"Then the TV people are being silly," Emma declared. "They're talking about the old Daddy, not the new Daddy."

Before we could respond, my phone rang. Maya's name appeared, and I knew late calls from her meant trouble.

"I need to take this," I told Mikel, and stepped out to the hallway.

"Bella, sorry to call so late, but we've got a problem," Maya sounded stressed. "Three more outlets picked up the story, but they're spinning it differently. They're saying you're using Emma as a weapon against Mikel."

My stomach dropped. "What?"

"They're saying you hid Emma to punish Mikel, and now you're using her medical issues to manipulate him back. They're painting you as cold and calculating."

"Who's saying that?" I asked, though I already knew it was Sophia.

"And that's not all. Someone leaked Emma's medical records. Just the fact that you put 'father unknown' on the birth certificate five years ago."

I leaned against the wall. "How? That's confidential!"

"I don't know, but it gets worse. Child Protective Services called again. They want to move up their visit to tomorrow morning. They received additional 'concerns' about Emma's welfare."

"What concerns?"

"Unstable home environment, excessive media exposure, and Emma's routine being disrupted by Mikel's sudden reappearance. They're questioning whether this situation is healthy for Emma."

I could see the news vans through the window. Their lights turned the estate into a circus, and strangers were judging whether I was a fit mother based on lies.

"Maya, call the lawyers first thing tomorrow. I want to know how someone accessed Emma's records, and I want to know who's leaking information."

"Already on it. But Bella, when I left the office tonight, I saw the elevator going to our floor after hours. Security's looking into it."

I had a sinking feeling. "What time?"

"Around eight. After everyone had left."

I thought about the confidential files in my office, documents about Emma, information that could be weaponized against us.

"Maya, I'm going in early tomorrow. Before the building opens. I need to check my office."

"I'll meet you there."

I hung up and found Mikel in the hallway. He'd heard enough.

"How bad?" he asked.

"Bad enough. Someone accessed Emma's medical records. CPS moved up their visit. And I think someone broke into my office."

His jaw clenched. "I'm coming with you tomorrow."

"Mikel"

"Bella, someone's waging a sophisticated campaign against us. They have inside access, they're manipulating the media, and it's escalating. You're not facing this alone."

His voice was both comforting and frightening. We were in this together now, which meant if I went down, he did too. And Emma with us.

"What did you tell Emma about the TV people?" I asked.

"That sometimes adults make mistakes, and other people like to talk about them. But that doesn't change how much we love her." He paused. "She asked if the mean people would make me go away again."

My heart ached. "What did you say?"

"I told her nothing would ever make me leave her again. That she's stuck with me, whether she likes it or not."

"And?"

He smiled slightly. "She said she likes it very much, but she's worried about you. She thinks the mean people are trying to make you sad so you'll be too tired to take care of everyone."

Emma was too perceptive. She understood what was happening—the campaign to wear me down, to make me slip up, to paint me as an unfit mother.

"We should go back to her," I said. "She shouldn't be alone with all this."

We found Emma in the sitting room, reading a book about dolphins. She looked up at us carefully, reading our faces.

"Are the mean people still bothering us?" she asked.

"A little," I said. "But we're working on making it stop."

"Can I help?"

Mikel knelt down next to her. "You already are, princess. By being brave and smart and yourself. But the most important thing is for you to just be a kid."

"And remember, this isn't your fault," I added. "Sometimes adults have conflicts that have nothing to do with children, even when children get caught in the middle."

Emma nodded seriously.

"Well, I hope you fix it soon," Emma said, "'cause I don't like seeing you worried. Worried Mommy makes me worried too."

I hugged her tight. "I'm sorry you have to see me worried, baby. We're going to fix this."

"Promise?"

"Promise."

After Emma was settled for the night, Mikel and I sat in the kitchen with coffee we didn't really want.

"I keep thinking about what Emma said," I told him. "About people judging you for old mistakes. She's right. The person they're attacking isn't who you are now."

The call came at 2:43 PM. I was in my office, going over those boring reports. Maya sounded freaked out but was trying to keep it together."Bella, it's Westwood Academy. Something happened to Emma."My stomach dropped. "What happened?""Some woman tried to get to her during playtime. Security stopped her, but Emma's asking for you."I already had my keys and jacket. "Call Mikel, tell him to meet me there, ASAP.""He's already on his way."That drive to Emma's school felt like forever. Traffic was awful, and I kept thinking of the worst things that could happen. Someone trying to grab my kid? After Thomas's threats, and us finding out we were being watched, it was like someone actually got to Emma. When I got to Westwood, Mikel was already there. I found him in the principal's office, talking to Mrs. Henderson. He looked pretty shaken, but he was trying to stay calm."Mommy!" Emma ran at me the second I walked in and hugged me super tight.I knelt down, checking her over. "You okay, s

  • THE WIFE WHO STOLE HIS HEART   Chapter 34: The Next Move

A silver Mercedes rolled into the Marriott's parking garage downtown right at 3 PM – exactly when Thomas Romano wanted. Sophia Chen was behind the wheel, a little shaky, watching the older guy get out of a black car a few spaces down.Thomas looked every bit the big-shot businessman at 68. Perfect silver hair, an expensive suit hiding how frail he was getting, and a gold watch catching the light. But Sophia knew how to read the coldness in his eyes – so different from Elena's warm ones."You look awful," he said as they sat down in a quiet corner of the hotel restaurant. "When did you last sleep?""Kind of hard when your life's falling apart," Sophia shot back, stirring sugar into coffee she didn't even want. "They had breakfast together this morning. All three of them. Like some perfect family."Thomas didn't react much, but Sophia saw his eyes tighten a bit. "Tell me about it.""Mikel made pancakes. Dolphin-shaped for the kid. Bella laughed – actually laughed – at something he said.

  • THE WIFE WHO STOLE HIS HEART   Chapter 33: Morning Routines

The smell of coffee woke me up early at 6:15 AM, even though the machine was set for 6:30. I stayed in bed for a bit, hearing quiet sounds from downstairs – cabinets opening, the fridge humming, someone moving around.Mikel.The thought made my stomach flip in a way I wasn't ready to think about. He was up making coffee, probably trying to help with Emma's morning routine without me even asking. My phone buzzed. Another text from a weird number. I knew the drill by now. Any happy moment always brought on a new wave of creepy messages.*Aww, cute morning. He's trying so hard to be the perfect husband again. Too bad you know what he can really do.*I trashed it without reading more. Sophia was getting sneakier, trying to mess with me. She wasn't just making threats anymore; she was trying to make me doubt every good thing with Mikel. But I wasn't going to let her ruin this morning.I found him in the kitchen, already dressed, hair wet from the shower. He was staring into the fridge like

  • THE WIFE WHO STOLE HIS HEART   Chapter 32: Family Dinner

Garlic and herbs scented the kitchen as I stirred the sauce. Outside, I watched Mikel help Emma build a fairy house out of leaves. Their laughter floated in, and for a second, it felt like the past five years were just a nightmare.Even though I loved the scene, I couldn't shake the feeling of being watched. The creepy messages hadn't stopped since Mikel moved into the guest house. If anything, they were worse, like our happiness was driving someone nuts."Mommy, Daddy says dinner smells amazing!" Emma yelled, bursting in, her face red from the cold air."Oh, does he?" I smiled, hugging her. "And what do you think?""It smells like home," she said, hitting me right in the heart.Mikel came in, shaking leaves off his sweater. "Sorry, I got her a little excited. We found the perfect spot for the fairy house.""It's by the big oak tree," Emma said importantly. "Daddy says fairies are like old trees 'cause they have more stories."I looked at Mikel, seeing the same wonder I felt. These we

The drive home from the hospital was way different than the mad dash we'd made six hours before. Emma was out like a light in her car seat; her new meds were already helping with the pain. Mikel and I sat up front, trying to sort out Dr. Chen's instructions."Every four hours," I mumbled, checking the med schedule on my phone. "Even through the night.""I'll do the night shifts," Mikel said right away. "You've been doing this on your own for weeks. You need to sleep."I glanced at him in the dim light, noticing how determined he looked. A part of me wondered if Sophia was still out there, watching us, keeping track of how close we were getting for whatever crazy reason she was doing this."Mikel, you don't have to. I can handle it—""Bella." He said, "Dr. Chen made it clear. Emma needs both of her parents involved, and she needs to feel safe. It's not about what we can do by ourselves anymore; it's about what's best for our girl."*Our daughter*. That phrase still gave me a jolt, but

  • THE WIFE WHO STOLE HIS HEART   Chapter 30: Emma's Sick Again

The phone rang at 3:47 AM, waking us up after a pretty good day. Emma's cry on the baby monitor wasn't her usual bad dream—she sounded really upset, and Mikel and I shot up.I got to her room first. She was bent over in bed, holding her stomach and crying."Mommy, it hurts," she said, shaking. "It hurts a lot."Mikel came in, hair all messed up, but he was immediately focused. He saw Emma's pale face and went for his jacket."Hospital," he said, and I grabbed Emma.As we were leaving, I got a text from the same weird number that had been bugging us: *Kids get sick when they're stressed. Too bad when they suffer.*I was scared, but Emma's crying was more important. We'd deal with Sophia later—right now, Emma needed a doctor. The drive to Seattle Children's Hospital felt super long. Emma was quiet against my shoulder, and Mikel drove fast but carefully. His hands were tight on the wheel, but he talked to Emma calmly."You'll be okay, princess. The doctors will fix you.""Is it the same
