AXEL’S POV:

The ride back home was lonely, but my mind wasn’t. It never was. There was always a thought keeping me company.

Hurting that boy should’ve given me something. Relief. Satisfaction. Closure. Something.

But all it left behind was a bitter taste in my mouth and red stains on my knuckles.

He wasn’t Altherio’s son. Not one of the Dons’ inner circle. Just some random twenty-something year old kid—beaten into mush, barely breathing, manipulated into trying to wipe my family off the map for a paycheck.

What the hell was going on?

Did I grow a conscience? Before now, I wouldn't care about things like that.

But what bothered me most was the awkward occurrence. I thought I lost it due to the incident with Altherio's son and others. I thought I couldn't stand blood or killing someone. Yet, I saw the boy's blood. I heard his bones crack. Yet, I wasn’t shaken. Apart from the guilt on my conscience, nothing more.

Not knowing what the heck was going on with me terrified me more than anyth

AVERY’S POV:We were cruising high above the clouds. Sea was tucked into the little leather recliner across from us, bundled up in a blanket, cheeks flushed with sleep. Axel sat beside me, warm and solid. His jacket was off, sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the veins that always caught my eye no matter how hard I tried to pretend they didn’t.I reached for his hand, our fingers linking instinctively.“I know I haven’t had the opportunity to properly thank you,” I said quietly. “For what you did for us. The date night… the way you thought of every detail. Thank you, Axel. Really.”He turned his head to me, eyes softer than usual, and before I could say another word, he leaned in and kissed me.Not hurried. Not possessive. Just us.His lips moved over mine with tenderness I didn’t think he knew how to show. A kiss that didn’t try to prove anything. A kiss that simply existed. When we pulled apart, I leaned into his shoulder. I stayed there a while, listening to the rhythm o

  • THE WIFE YOU LEFT   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED & EIGHTY: A GIRL.

AXEL’S POV:I was grateful that Avery obeyed—even if I knew better than to think she’d actually gone to bed. Still, the gesture mattered. No matter how hard she fights me, no matter how reckless she gets… she’s still my wife. The woman who reads a room like scripture. The only one who’s ever really gotten me.I slammed my hands onto the desk, eyes flicking to Baron, who watched me in silence like he wasn’t sure if I was going to dismiss him or deck him.I didn’t let him wait long."You don’t run orders from Avery unless they pass through me first. Understood?"He didn’t flinch. “Yes, boss.""Any of you that will ever take instructions from her again without running it through me,” I said coldly, walking up to him until I was a breath away, “I will personally shave the beard off that person's face or his hair with a steak knife and feed it to him.”He bowed, nodding. “Who did she ask to look for Wilder?” I demanded."It wasn’t me, Boss,” he replied instantly. “She didn’t come to me di

AVERY’S POVSea screamed so loud I thought my heart would detonate from the inside.“Are we going to die? Mommy, are we gonna die?” she cried.“No, baby, no. You’re fine. We’re fine,” I said, lying with everything I had in me. My hands trembled against the seatbelt as I reached back, clicking it across her. “Put this on. Right now.”Her eyes were wide, wild, pure fear. My own stomach twisted, not for me, not even for Axel—but for her. For the child growing inside me. For the fragile peace we thought we had.“Axel!” I snapped as the car veered. He was already on the comm, voice like ice laced with gasoline.“Thaddeus,” he barked. “Get Baron on perimeter. Find out where the hit came from. I want someone alive—do you hear me? We’re not doing body bags today. I want a name.”"Yes, sir."“Whoever set this up, they’re either stupid or desperate. Either way, I want to hear them beg.”Another car swerved past us. Axel floored the gas, tires screaming. The road ahead was clear now, smoke and f

  • THE WIFE YOU LEFT   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED & SEVENTY-EIGHT: PR STUNT OR GENUINE GESTURE.

AXEL’S POV:Contacting Thaddeus had been quick—getting the address, not so much the drive. Every red light mocked me. Every second in traffic felt like a chokehold. I was gripping the wheel so tightly my knuckles paled under the pressure.By the time I arrived, the sun was beating down hard, but I didn’t bother hiding my irritation. I threw on a pair of sunglasses—not for the sun, but to keep from glaring at anyone who dared make eye contact—and stalked toward the children’s wing with purpose. The atmosphere inside the hospital shifted the moment I stepped in. It was clean and warm, with pastel walls and the distant sound of laughter floating down the hallway. Balloons were tied to the railings. Nurses smiled as they passed. The place smelled like sanitizers and crayon wax.I followed the sound of Avery’s voice before I even saw her.She was sitting cross-legged on a colorful rug in a semi-circle of wide-eyed kids. Sea sat beside her, animatedly turning pages as Avery read aloud. The

  • THE WIFE YOU LEFT   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED & SEVENTY-SEVEN: RAVE.

AXEL’S POV:She hung up on me.I stared at the phone like it had just spat in my face, then dialed again. Straight to voicemail. No one fucking hangs up on me.I closed my eyes, inhaling slowly, trying not to punch a hole through the wall.I’d woken up ten minutes ago to a cold bed and an empty room. My throat was sore from calling Avery’s name over and over. No response. No note. Not even a message.Coming home with her gone scared the crap out of me. Because, I just didn't want to loose her again. Now, waking up to her gone again drove me insane. My body was a wreck—bruised, aching in places I hadn’t felt since my early days in the underworld. It had been hell with Ryan. The bastard was silent the entire time, stone-cold even while being tortured. And just when I thought the night couldn't get worse, someone attempted to break him out while I was there. It turned into a bloodbath.I’d only checked my phone to see the time, hoping for some word from Avery—only to find her name glowi

  • THE WIFE YOU LEFT   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED & SEVENTY-SIX: BLUE GOWN.

AVERY’S POV:The examination room smelled like antiseptic and lemon air freshener that wasn't fooling anyone. The walls were a washed-out white, and there was a mounted monitor in the corner blinking with soft blue lights. Sea was sitting in the corner with her legs crossed, spinning slightly on the wheeled stool like a restless child. I was perched on the examination bed, stripped down to nothing but the blue hospital gown they gave me. It barely covered anything. One wrong stretch and the back would be a broadcast.“I swear,” I whispered to Sea with a dry chuckle, “if I sneeze too hard, this thing’s flying off.”Sea laughed, covering her mouth. “You look like a sad burrito.”“I feel like a sad burrito.”Just then, the door opened, and Cedric stepped in with his usual calm confidence. His lab coat flared slightly as he moved, tablet in one hand, a kind smile on his face.“How’s our patient doing?” he asked warmly.“Cold, cranky, and contemplating a dramatic exit,” I said.He chuckle

  • THE WIFE YOU LEFT   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED & SEVENTY-FIVE: CHAOS IN PARADISE.

AVERY’S POV:Axel didn’t flinch. He didn't move.He tilted his glass, downed the last of his drink, then placed it on the table like he hadn’t just walked into our home looking like a goddamn crime scene. His eyes locked on mine, burning and unyielding.“Why would you leave the house without informing me?” he asked, like nothing was wrong.Like the blood didn’t exist.Like the silence of the graveyard hadn’t followed me home.I blinked, stunned. “You—are you serious right now?”He didn’t answer.“I’ve been calling and texting you since last night!” I cried. “You vanish, come back looking like this, and the first thing out of your mouth is that?”He rose slowly from the chair, and I caught the sway in his step—the weight in it. When he exhaled, I caught the scent on his breath.Intoxication. “You were gone, Axel,” I said, quieter now. “And you didn’t even care to pick up your damn phone. You don’t get to question me.”His expression went from blank to furious very quickly. “You left t

  • THE WIFE YOU LEFT   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED & SEVENTY-FOUR: PAYING MY LAST RESPECT.

AVERY’S POV:The ride was silent.Even Thaddeus knew some silences shouldn’t be filled—not with music, not with talk, not with breath. When the cemetery gates creaked open, my stomach churned. It was almost dawn, but the world was still cloaked in darkness. The mist hovered low, brushing the cracked headstones like fingers trailing over forgotten skin.“We’re here, ma’am,” Thaddeus said gently.I nodded, my throat clogged. I reached for the bouquet wrapped in soft brown paper—white lilies and blue forget-me-nots, flowers I’d never given him in life.“Wait here,” I murmured, already stepping out.Thaddeus gave a respectful nod and stayed by the car.The path was uneven, the weeds tall and unbothered. This wasn’t one of those polished, garden-like cemeteries with polished marble and trimmed lawns. This was… neglected. Old. A graveyard where even the dead were forgotten. It made me mad because Flynn deserved way better. He was wealthy, hard working, and reputable, only for Lyra to reduce
