AVERY’S POV:

I was back home, dressed in full black combat gear that hugged every curve of me with intentional ease, reinforced with the tactical belt strapped above my hips and the pregnancy support belt around my waist. It cradled the child inside me, keeping my growing bump secure while still allowing me movement.

I made my way to the bed, where my husband still lay in an unmoving sleep—so beautiful, it hurt to look at him. His skin had a pale cast from weeks without sunlight. The man I knew as fire and steel, now still as stone.

I sat beside him quietly. My body felt heavy. My bones, heavier.

Reaching for his hand, I took it gently, lifting and pressing to my cheek. I leaned into it, as if maybe I could remember how it used to feel when he held me. Maybe I could feel it again. But all I felt was the stillness.

I lifted it to my lips

I kissed each knuckle, slow and reverent, lingering on the roughness of his calloused skin, like I could somehow force him to wake through skin-to

  • THE WIFE YOU LEFT   CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED & THIRTY-ONE: WHAT’S LEFT OF HOME.

AVERY’S POV:The temple had quieted. The bloodshed, the chaos, the rage—it all seemed to fade.Axel was beside me, his fingers intertwined with mine, our bodies aching, yet upright. And then… he walked in.The stranger. The man with the dagger. The one who had ended it all.My eyes widened when I truly saw his face—clean now than the first time I saw him. He was the same man I'd met in the bushes after Axel, Sea and I got lost walking back from the beach. The one that warned me about Akira. But now… now I understood.“You,” I whispered, breath catching in my throat. He gave a soft nod, a kind smile pressing into the corners of his lips. “You remember.”Axel and I stood to face him, a mutual gratitude threading silently between us.“Thank you,” I said, stepping forward. “For everything. For saving us.”He gave a slight bow, humble yet firm. “You shouldn’t thank me. I simply did what I was meant to do.”“How did you do it?” Axel asked. “How did you know?”He paused, his gaze sweeping ac

  • THE WIFE YOU LEFT   CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED & THIRTY: IN SAFE HANDS.

AXEL’S POV:Pain. There are no words strong enough for what I felt. My shoulder had been twisted backward. Ribs cracked like branches under foot. One knee felt like it had been shattered from the inside out, and every breath I took dragged a thousand knives across my lungs. My vision faded but I kept my eyes on my wife. She was suspended in the air, her limbs trembling, her screams fading into shallow whimpers. Her hand stretched over her stomach as if trying to protect the child we made with love and desperation. That sight tore through the agony.Something inside me roared to life, louder than the bones grinding in my body. Stronger than death whispering in my ear. I had to get to her.I tried to stand. My left leg gave out.I forced it back under me.And then—the temple doors exploded.Light surged in like a divine reckoning, and a silhouette darted through the dust.A man. Young. Wild-eyed. Fast.He raised his arm and threw a dagger, its blade glinting like silver lightning.“The

  • THE WIFE YOU LEFT   CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED & TWENTY-NINE: BLOOD SEAL.

AVERY’S POV:I should’ve felt fear watching her—Akira, elevated slightly off the ground, her hands glowing as she drained the breath from my husband’s lungs. But what I felt instead was… something bitterer.Pity.For a moment, I saw the woman she once was—the outcast, the sister left behind, the lover betrayed, the mother robbed. That kind of agony could ruin anyone. But the pity didn’t last.Because it was quickly swallowed whole by everything she had made me. A murderer. A monster. A woman with blood on her hands and darkness clinging to her soul like it was perfume. Akira had stripped me down to the point I didn’t even recognize myself anymore.I’d mourn later. Right now, Axel was dying.I struggled against the invisible force pinning me down. My nails scraped stone. I screamed his name "Axel!" but I couldn’t move. Then I heard footsteps making me look forward. Ryan.He stood slowly from the shadows like something waking from a nightmare. My stomach dropped. “Oh, could this get an

  • THE WIFE YOU LEFT   CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED & TWENTY-EIGHT: SUCKING THE LIFE OUT OF ME.

AXEL’S POV:“I lived at the edge of the village. Alone. Watching. Waiting. I saw her feed the man I still loved. I watched them sleep peacefully under the stars while I drowned in silence.”“What does that have to do with me?” Avery groaned, her voice hoarse, weak but unwilling to surrender.Akira stopped. Her chest rose and fell.“Shut up and listen!" she roared. The walls seemed to crack with her voice but Avery didn't."I'm bored of your sob story," Avery added. I clenched my fists. I wanted to stand, to tear her away from Avery, but my legs were stone. “When I couldn’t live in that nightmare anymore,” Akira continued anyway, “I left. I disappeared. Everything I’d ever known—I abandoned. I travelled beyond our lands, into the west, far past the cities where no one knew my face.”Her face softened briefly.“That’s when I met Blackwood. Yes. That Blackwood.”My mind went wild, the pieces clicking together—but too late.“He didn’t know where I came from. I didn’t even know what I wa

  • THE WIFE YOU LEFT   CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED & TWENTY-SEVEN: THE STORY OF RESENTMENT.

AXEL’S POV:"Daddy…"A voice—faint, like a whisper caught in the wind—tugged at me.It belonged to Sea.I blinked. My chest rose with difficulty, breath shallow, muscles groaning with each motion. I didn’t know where I was, but her voice was real. It had to be."Sea!" I rasped, pushing myself up.Pain clawed through my body, but I ignored it. My legs carried me forward, uneven, unstable, but driven. The walls around me warped and stretched, colors bleeding into each other like a dream slipping into a nightmare. Then I saw it.A door.Slightly open, golden light spilling from the edges—warm, unnatural. I reached for it, my fingers trembling as they met the cold brass handle.I pushed it open fully—and the brightness exploded.A flash, like the sun itself had burst in front of me.I flinched, covering my face with my arms."Sea!" I called out again, but the moment my foot crossed the threshold, it felt like falling.I hit the ground hard, my palm slapping stone. The light dimmed, and su

  • THE WIFE YOU LEFT   CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED & TWENTY-SIX: RUINED SACRIFICE.

AVERY’S POVI was trying not to black out, but everything around me was slipping into shadows. My chest burned. My lungs screamed. The floor beneath me seemed to tilt, and I could barely feel my legs anymore. But I saw it. The blood.Dark drops hit the floor in slow motion—from my nose… and from the corner of my mouth. Then my body went limp over his shoulder.Axel.He moved with a quiet desperation, one arm locked around my thighs, the other gripping my back as he carried me out of the room. My head hung down, bouncing lightly with each furious stride. I saw glimpses of hallway lights, startled faces blurring past, then concrete as we hit the garage. The car door opened. He didn’t say a word.He yanked open the trunk and shoved me inside.I wanted to protest—wanted to say I couldn’t breathe in there—but the words never made it out.The last thing I saw before the trunk slammed shut was his face—haunted. Determined. Then came the black. The engine roared, and the tires screamed agains
