Charlotte

Nicole looks at Rhys, who just shakes his head helplessly.

"She's determined," he says. "Trust me, I tried."

Nicole sighs. "Let me check with Dr. Martinez first..."

"No." My voice is sharp now. "I'm not asking for medical permission. I'm a patient, not a prisoner. I have the right to move around this hospital as long as I'm not putting myself in immediate danger."

"You could reinjure your ribs..."

"Then I'll be careful. But I'm going to see Kevin Anders whether you help me or not. The only question is whether I go in a wheelchair with assistance, or whether I try to walk there myself and potentially fall and hurt myself worse." I raise an eyebrow. "Your choice."

Nicole looks between Rhys and me, clearly recognizing a losing battle when she sees one.

"Fine. But if Dr. Martinez asks, this was against my medical advice." She disappears and returns a moment later with a wheelchair. "And you're taking this slowly. No rushing, no sudden movements."

"Agreed."

Rhys"So she was taken. Forcibly.""That's what the evidence suggests, yes." Detective Sarah meets my eyes. "Mr. Van Allen, I need to ask you something. And I need you to be completely honest with me.""Of course.""Do you know anything about a warehouse fire that occurred last night? One belonging to Anders Corporation?""I saw the news this morning. Why?""Because Michael Anders was released on bail two days ago. And this morning, he filed a complaint claiming you were responsible for the arson.""That's absurd.""Is it?" Her gaze is penetrating."Detective, I didn't burn down that warehouse." I lean forward. "And frankly, I'm insulted that you'd come here asking me about a building when Charlotte's mother is missing.""I understand your frustration, Mr. Van Allen. But I have to follow every lead, and right now, Michael Anders is making some very serious accusations."I lean back in my chair, forcing myself to think clearly. "You said Michael was released on bail two days ago?""Tha

Rhys"How did you get in here?""Money opens doors, Rhys. You should know that by now." He pushes off from my desk and takes a few steps toward me. "Though I suppose you're still learning. New money always is."I don't take the bait. "What do you want, Michael?""What do I want?" He laughs, but there's no humor in it. "I want a lot of things. I want my son out of jail. I want my company back. I want my reputation restored." His smile vanishes. "But right now, I'll settle for an explanation.""An explanation for what?""Don't play stupid with me." His voice hardens. "My warehouse burned down last night. Eleven PM. Total loss. Millions of dollars in inventory, gone."I meet his gaze steadily. "I heard about that. Terrible accident.""Accident?" Michael's eyes narrow. "It was arson. The investigators already confirmed it. Someone deliberately set that fire.""Then I'm sure the police will find whoever's responsible.""The police." He scoffs. "You think I need the police to tell me who di

Charlotte I wake up to the incessant buzzing of my phone. My eyes feel heavy, crusted with dried tears. My head pounds with a dull, persistent ache. For a moment, I don't remember why everything hurts. I reach for my phone on the nightstand, squinting at the bright screen. The time reads 6:47 AM.My notifications are flooded. Texts. Emails. News alerts. What the hell?Beside me, Rhys is still asleep, his arm draped across the pillow where my head had been. His face is peaceful, in a way it never is when he's awake.I sit up slowly, careful not to wake him, and unlock my phone. The first notification is from a news app: BREAKING: Anders Corp Warehouse Burns Down in Suspected Arson.I click on it.The article loads with a photo of flames consuming a large industrial building. Firefighters spray water from multiple hoses, but the fire is clearly out of control. Black smoke billows into the early morning sky.One of Anders Corporation's major distribution warehouses was engulfed in flame

Charlotte Rhys opens the passenger door for me, and I sink into the seat, my hands trembling. He closes it gently, walks around to the driver's side, and gets in.The engine starts. The car pulls out of the driveway.I stare out the window, watching the Anders estate disappear behind us. The streetlights blur past, orange and yellow streaks in the darkness.Rhys doesn't speak. His hands grip the steering wheel, his jaw tight.I don't speak either. I can't. If I open my mouth, I'll scream. Or cry. Or both. The silence stretches between us, heavy and suffocating. Minutes tick past.We turn onto our street. Rhys pulls into the driveway and cuts the engine.Still, neither of us moves.I can feel him looking at me, waiting. But I keep my eyes fixed on the dashboard, on the little green light that indicates the car is off."Charlotte," he says finally, his voice soft.I shake my head. I can't fall apart yet.He seems to understand. He gets out, comes around to my side, and opens the door.

Charlotte The security's eyes widen slightly as he recognizes us. "I'm sorry, but you can't...""We're here to see the Anders family," I repeat, my voice harder this time."They're not expecting you." His hand moves to the radio clipped to his belt. "You need to leave.""Call them," Rhys says. The security's jaw tightens. "Ms. Hayes, Mr. Van Allen, I'm going to have to ask you to leave the premises. The family has made it clear that you're not welcome here.""My mother is missing," I say, stepping closer to him. "And I'm not leaving until I speak with them.""Ma'am, I can't let you..."I push past him."Hey!" The security reaches for my arm, but Rhys steps between us."Don't touch her," Rhys warns, with his voice low as he tries to push the security backwards. Behind me, I hear the guard speaking urgently into his radio, but I don't stop. My heels click against the marble floor as I stride down the hallway, Rhys close behind me."Charlotte," he says quietly. "Are you sure about this

  • THE WRONG BROTHER    Chapter 135

Charlotte We approach the front desk where a uniformed officer sits behind bulletproof glass. "Can I help you?" A uniformed officer behind the desk looks up at us."We're here to meet Detective Sarah," Rhys says. "She's expecting us.""Names?""Charlotte Hayes and Rhys Van Allen."The officer picks up a phone, speaks briefly, then hangs up. "She'll be here in a few minutes. Have a seat."We sit in the chairs lining the wall. I keep the security footage printouts clutched in my hands, my knee bouncing anxiously.Rhys reaches over and takes my free hand. "Breathe.""I'm trying.""She's going to help us. The police will find her."I nod, but I'm not sure I believe it.After what feels like forever but is probably only seven minutes, the door beside the front desk opens and Detective Sarah appears. She's wearing dark pants and a white blouse with her blazer over it, her badge clipped to her belt. Her expression is serious but not unkind."Ms. Hayes. Mr. Van Allen." She approaches us. "C
