Dione's POV

“Thanks for driving me home,” I said, my voice shyly low, as we stopped at the house. My utterance broke the damp silence that had clouded us.

Maybe because I wasn't used to being driven home by someone different.

But, I had no choice since Aldric had left me at the hotel in shame. In front of everyone. Cameras too.

“ You don't have to thank me for that. For you it's nothing,” Alexander said, his lips lifted up in a smile.

That smile.

I couldn't help but smile too. Though it was barely visible, but I knew I smiled. Maybe because I was grateful. Or the way his deep pink lips curved beautifully.

I blinked, taking my eyes off.

“And yeah, t..thank you for the billion-dollar investment,” I quickly got out.

He smiled back, his voice softer, “You really don't need to thank me. I've always wanted to collaborate with you,” he confessed and leaned forward. Yet again... my heart bolted faster that I feel the soft taps alongside my breath.

Somehow... I knew what was coming. And, no. I didn't flinch. I didn't stop us.. I waited for it.

But instead he picked my handkerchief that had fallen and handed it to me. "Don't forget this."

Shit.

Dione!

What was wrong with my mind?

Why was I feeling this soft and tender around another man? Worse, I think I just blushed again.

Why's my mind drifting apart…now?

Had my heart been too hostile to quickly melt when I'm shown real care in the slightest?

Fuck, Dione. Get yourself together.

I masked the embarrassment that had taken over my face with a little something stoic and confidence I knew wasn't there. I thanked him, got out walked towards the towering iron gate that served as entrance to the house.

The black marbled floor clicked softly, as my heels knocked on them while I walked into the house.

The cold air from the conditioner hit my face and tingled my skin. The first floor was dimly lit.

The room smelled like candle wax and roasted ham.

I traced the smell till I stopped at the dining space.

Candles burned on the table, soft yellow light emitting from them. It shone around the platters of served ham and a bottle of red wine.

Aldric.

Maybe he had only not forgotten to celebrate the company's biggest investment with me, yet.

The somewhere he had to be was actually here. To set this up for me and surprise me. A smile crept up my face and burned my cheeks and I felt bad for getting mad at him for leaving me at the hotel earlier.

I reached for the flowers that were carefully placed at the table edge with a heart shaped card and perceived it.

The sweet and spicy smell of roses wafted up into my nostril and their velvety petals released a romantic fragrance that filled the air.

My fingers flipped the red ribbon attached to the card as I read. The palpable feeling, invoking memories of gentle moments of love, chemistry that I couldn't deny.

‘To my only princess. Love always. Aldric’

A smile smeared my face, somehow.

Was this deceptive? Factual or what? I don't understand but a smile tore through my lips yet again.

I heaved in relief, climbing the stairs.

And though tonight had been a nightmare, I could finally use my drugs, enjoy the dinner and rest from this chaos.

Just when I got to my bedroom and picked my pills. I heard voices I hadn't heard when I entered.

My eyeballs danced in their socket in quizzically.

I shoved the pill bottle into my purse and moved outside.

My bare feet melted into the cold marble.

I traced the voices.

My heart beat increased by each closer step I took.

My fist clenched tight beside me.

My mind raced with questions.

Or had Aldric left his television on?

Did someone break in and held Aldric hostage? Oh no.

Aldric isn't home. And I don't remember seeing his car parked anywhere in the house?

Did I even check well? I'm not sure.

What if he's in trouble? I hated to have to stay in different rooms. Aldric frankly wanted it. And now see.

Somehow the urge to return to my room tugged my heart, but fighting myself off the urge didn't require much as I found my legs still moving...towards the increasing voices.

Voices? No. They sounded rhythmical and as much as it was similar to voice, I couldn't grab any.

Like something... something. Hell no!

My heart stopped the moment I got the sound clearer. It was a moan. A deep throat moan like... Aldric?!!

I felt a skip in my ribs.

My eyes watered.

And my mind screamed caution…harder than earlier.

To just flee, get out, escape maybe. And be anywhere but here.

But it was too late. Because I realized I was already standing at the door where the mourn sounded like some adult movie to my ears.

And just then, I heard the knob, click and the wood squeak open, revealing my…own husband.

The man I sacrificed everything for and still gave my kidney, covered in some fucking sweat, bare chest, save for the pants that hung loosely on his torso.

My nose crushed and I just wanted to explode as their godforsaken scent almost dug a six feet for me.

"What the hell are you doing here?" He scowled, shamelessly masking the guilt that webbed his tone, like I hadn't just caught him cheating on me.

And the way he looked me over like I was some piece of trash ruining his fun. Made me wish I didn't exist.

"Get back in your room, I will see you there, okay?"

"Baby, any problem?" A soft voice called from inside.

My teary face turned to a little frown.

"It's nothing babe, we are good."

Babe?

Aldric called someone babe..in my presence?

With all my strength, pushing the pain that had started to build up again in my ribs behind, I forced my way past Aldric and stormed into the room.

"What the hell has come over you?" Aldric thundered.

My heart sank.

The world blurred around me. And for a moment my ears just chimed like an alarm.

My pulse increased and I felt my lips go wide.

Lily?

  • THREE CHANCES LEFT EX-HUSBAND    Chapter Thirteen: When It Starts to Break

Dione's POVSilence lay damp and heavy throughout the journey like a pressure foam.Instead, my ears sang and sirened on their own, save for the several honks, loud screeches, and roaring revs of the traffic on Philipa Street.Alexander's gaze remained on the streets and his hands on the steering wheel while I melted into the leather seat beside him. My head rested on the neck guide and was slightly tilted to the side towards Alexander. He used to be vibrant, teasy, and playful, but now he has suddenly grown cold and very impassive. I can't help but wonder if he is alright on the inside. The way he’s warm this moment and chilly the next. The way he would say sweet things, but his eyes remain stoic and void of feeling, like the words didn’t just roll out of his mouth.Suddenly, he cleared his throat and his voice pierced through the haze of silence like a knife. “I've been on my thoughts lately and I want to be sure you are safe in that house with him,” he stated rather than asked.I s

Dione's POVMy body stiffened when I heard that familiar voice behind me.Alexander?I turned to see him, Alexander was standing about a few feet away from me.His hands were flipped into his pocket. How long has he been standing over there? And this time he wore a dark colored suit that I couldn't point out because of the weather I hadn't realized had darkened.Maybe black or dark purple or dark brown. But he exuded this luxuriant aura that screamed graciousness, though he was quite silent as he hadn't said anything…except my name.“You shouldn't be out here alone,” he finally let off a deep grunt, moved towards me and started undressing.“Alexander?” I called as my heart skipped. Why is he pulling his clothes off?“You'd catch a cold out here dressed like that,” his voice was soft as he scolded, crouching down to my level and placing his suit jacket over my shoulders, so that his finger scraped my shoulder sending a bolt of electricity running through my frame.I blinked. Now that

Dione's POV My phone rang again, the third time. And I didn't only hang up but this time, I hung up and switched it to mute mode, returning my attention on my path as I found my way out of the beach side towards my car.If I didn't know better I'd mistake Aldric's multiple calls as an emergency over something important. My phone buzzed and vibrated again. I checked. Aldric, again. My eyes dulled and drained of feeling. And my mind filled up to the brim with a thousand thoughts.A sigh escaped my lips.I threw my phone into my bag, ignoring the call and just settling into the car.And then I heard a car rev up from a distance, just as I almost drove away.Kalen.I noticed Kalen and one other man in the silver SUV.How long have they been there?I didn't need bodyguarding now.I wanted to be left alone.“Hey!” I waved my hand and hollered to get their attention to me and then I returned my hands and waited as they approached.“Hi,” I greeted in response to their curt bows.“Can you gu

Dione's POVThe whooshing wind blew through my hair. I felt my skin tingle in response to the cold breeze that slapped on it.The beach side smelled like freedom and nature. The grumbling water sooshed to my feet and as soon as it touched my sandals it returned to its gentle territory of white sea sands.There.At the far left, seagulls flapped and flew about, their loud squawks piercing into the serene atmosphere.“ It's good to see you,” I turned at the sound of Victoria's voice. Her sharp blue eyes twinkled with delightment. And though her brown hair is packed up in a low pony, it blew everywhere and all over her face as she smiled.I forced a smile,“I guess it's the same here too,” I replied, adjusting my blazer colar and the inky eye glass that seemed to slip on my nose bridge.“It had better be the same, Dee, cause God! That dude forced you to cut me off, like duh!” Victoria rolled her eyes into her head, “ what really happened when I was away? I mean when I was locked out.” She

Dione's POV“What?” His eyes went wide.Aldric's face turned white like plain paper.Lily's face morphed from surprise to a devilish smirk.“You don't think I will believe that crap right?” Aldric asked, disgustingly, “ you are not going to abandon the company you watched grow just like that. I mean, thanks to your sorry face at the hotel, the company has gone all over the internet.” The way he confirmed that openly without remorse wriggled my heart. And I promise myself to clarify my tainted reputation, no matter what.“ Let's see how long your strategy lasts,” I said, my voice tight.“Here's your necklace, Dione, you can have it,” Lily said, stretching it to me finally, her face still ragged with pretentious tears. And I felt relief at least. When I reached to take it from her, she cuffed my hand tightly in hers. My face shrinked in confusion.I struggled to free my fingers, but they remained stuck in hers.Demon-like smirk tore through her lips. Her eyes glinted with desperation,

Dione's POVAldric's voice raised and wavered in threat, “ Drink to Lily's accomplishment.”A gasp forced my lips to part.My heart banged with utter helplessness. If I hadn't dealt myself the mistake of giving my kidney to Aldric. Maybe this day wouldn't come when I will have to be compelled to drink to satisfy anyone. And there, Lily stood, that bastard. Her eyes wide but not in surprise this time. But in excitement and satisfaction. She knew the truth. She knew I can't drink it. And I think that adds to the triumph in the corner of her lips.Lily strolled steadily towards me, her voice deceitful. “ She doesn't have to drink, I will just return the necklace to her, I don't want to get between you two.” Aldric waved his hand dismissively, “ Let her do it, she's the senior and she's okay with it, right Dione? It's for the company.”All this while I've been wondering why I ever thought everyone from a humble background was really humble in character. But I was a fool.Because why will
