DEREK’S POV

I should have been sleeping.

It was past midnight, the pack house was quiet, and Celeste was beside me breathing in the slow, even rhythm of deep sleep. I had a council meeting at seven. A patrol report at nine. A border negotiation that had been delayed twice already and couldn’t be pushed again.

I had every reason to sleep.

Instead I lay on my back staring at the ceiling, and thought about Aria Winters for the fourteenth night in a row.

I’d stopped counting after the first w

  • TOO FAT TO BE LUNA   CHAPTER 138

She arrived on a Friday.I know it was a Friday because Fridays had a specific quality in the pack — the particular ease of a community moving toward the weekend's rhythm, the specific loosening of the week's structure that produced a different quality of presence in the common spaces. People more themselves. The pack at a lower register than the working week required.Gisela arrived into this. And the register changed.---I heard about it from Nora first.Standard."There's a visitor," Nora said at school. Morning. Before the first session. The specific quality of someone delivering information they find significant and are presenting with the appropriate weight."Who," I said."Gisela Thorne," she said. "Alpha Thorne's daughter. Western Crescent Pack." She held my gaze with the amber eyes. "They've been in formal diplomatic contact with Caden for three months."I held that."Three months," I said."Since before the transition," Nora said. "Since before Zane formally became Alpha."

Rhys assigned us on a Wednesday. He delivered it at breakfast with the specific casualness of someone who is presenting information they have calculated carefully as though it arrived spontaneously — the particular quality of a person who has been Beta for fifteen years and has developed, through fifteen years of managing people and situations, the specific skill of making deliberate things look accidental.I had been studying him for five years.I was not fooled."Border patrol," he said. Pouring tea. Not looking at either of us. "Eastern sector. Saturday morning. Six a.m.""Who else," I said."Small group," he said. "You, Nora, two senior warriors." He paused. The specific pause of someone adding information as an afterthought that is not an afterthought. "And Zane."I looked at him.He looked at his tea."Zane," I said."He's doing patrol rotations," Rhys said. "Getting familiar with the border from the ground level. Standard for a new Alpha." He met my eyes with the specific bland

Caden announced it on a Monday. Not at a formal gathering — the specific quality of Caden's significant announcements was that they arrived in ordinary moments, in the council sessions and morning meetings and the specific daily texture of pack leadership rather than in the ceremonial spaces that other Alphas used for things they wanted to feel larger than they were.Caden made things feel exactly as large as they were.No larger. No smaller. The announcement arrived at the Monday morning council session that Lian attended as Beta-in-training and that I heard about that evening with the running calculation's characteristic precision."Caden is stepping back," Lian said.We were in the kitchen.Rhys at the stove — present, aware, the specific quality of someone who had known this was coming and was processing the arrival of what he had known was coming."Stepping back," I said."Partially," Lian said. "Not full transfer — not yet. But the primary leadership function. The daily decision

  • TOO FAT TO BE LUNA   CHAPTER 135

The year between fifteen and sixteen was the year I learned the difference between suppression and control. They felt similar from the outside. From the inside they were entirely different things.---Suppression was what I had been doing since the classroom.Since the first Tuesday when Petra had looked at me and Nora had sat down beside me and I had pushed the gold down and filed the pushing in the category of things I did automatically without deciding to do them.Suppression was the removal of something. The specific quality of taking a thing and pressing it below the surface and holding it there with the focused effort of someone who had decided that the surface was safer without it.It cost something.I had not understood the cost until I understood the alternative.---Control was different.Control was what the wolf had been teaching me.Not in words — wolves didn't teach in words, they taught in the specific insistent language of a thing that had its own knowledge and was sha

  • TOO FAT TO BE LUNA   CHAPTER 134

I sat on the corridor floor until the voices stopped. Not long after — ten minutes, maybe twelve. Caden leaving with the specific quality of someone who has said what needed saying and is returning to the larger business of running a territory that didn't pause for two-in-the-morning conversations. The front door.Rhys's footsteps — the familiar quality of them, the specific weight I had learned over five years — moving through the kitchen. The sound of water. The particular sound of someone doing something small with their hands while their mind was somewhere else. Then his footsteps toward the stairs.I pressed myself against the wall. Not hiding exactly. The specific quality of someone who needed one more moment before the moment ended — who was not ready to be seen yet because being seen would require the management of being seen and I was not yet in a condition to manage anything. His footsteps stopped. At the bottom of the stairs. The specific stillness of someone who has felt s

Two more years passed.I marked them differently from the first three. The first three I had marked by what was built — the adoption, the school, Nora, the east circuit, the hill, the library's third shelf, the training ground, the Beta sessions, the trees in the back garden. The accumulation of a life that had been constructed from nothing and had become something specific and real. The next two I marked by what was changing.---Lian at fifteen was Beta-in-training in everything except the formal title.Caden had not given him the title yet — he was fifteen, and there were parameters around the title that the formal pack law maintained regardless of capability, and Caden respected the parameters the way he respected all structures that had been built for good reasons. But the function was there. The specific role had been filling itself in the way that things filled themselves when the person for them had arrived and was simply waiting for the form to catch up with the reality. He s

ARIA’S POVSix months. That’s how long I’d been living in hell.Six months of scrubbing floors until my knees bled. • TOO FAT TO BE LUNA   CHAPTER 2: The First Night of Hell

ARIA’S POV I ran through the pack grounds, past the training fields where warriors stopped mid-drill to stare. Past the gardens where I used to play as a child when my parents were alive and the world made sense. I ran until I reached the edge of pack territory, where the forest grew dark and th

  • TOO FAT TO BE LUNA   CHAPTER 1: You’re Too Fat To Be My Luna

ARIA’S POVThe Moon Goddess hated me.That was the only explanation for why my fated mate—the man destined by the universe to love me unconditionally—was currently staring at me like I’d crawled out of a sewer.“No,” Alpha Derek whispered, his blue eyes wide with horror. “No, no, no… this can’t be
