EMBER’S POV

“You’ve been in here for hours,” she says, drifting closer. “Marjorie said you’d holed up with my grandmother’s old things. I did wonder.”

I snap the book shut, dragging it off the table and into my lap.

“Good for you. Do you usually track guests through the house, or am I just special?”

“Prickly.” Hale tilts her head, her bright, unsettling eyes dropping to the leather cover in my lap. “Why the hostility, Ember? I thought we established a rapport yesterday. I helped you, didn’t I?”

EMBER’S POV“I worked like a dog for it,” she agrees, glowing again, lit up from inside by her own worst self. “Made myself sharp and useful and beautiful, all so I could be in that room. And finally, there he was. My Rhovan. More beautiful than the memory.”She sneers, a vicious twist of her lips.“And beside him—her. The Alpha Queen. Lady Isolde. Ethereal and cold and covered in everything I had ever starved for. I hated her the instant I saw her. Hated her for having him. Hated her for being everything I’d clawed toward my whole life and would never once be.”“Only you could obsess over a married man for two years, stalk him across an entire continent, and somehow have the absolute audacity to hate his wife for standing next to her own husband.”Devika doesn’t even flinch. If anything, her chin lifts higher, utterly unrepentant in her delusion.“I did what any woman with a bone of ambition would do. Anyway, right there in that feast, I slid a note into his lap while I poured his win

EMBER’S POV“That was when the fight happened,” Silas says now, in slow realisation.“That was the fight.” She finally meets his eyes, devoid of any mercy. “I told you everything I felt that night. That I hated this mountain. That I hated our family. That I hated the filthy legacy you loved so much. That I hated you. And you told me to fuck off, brother. You told me the mountain would run better without me wearing everyone down with my nagging.” A thin, razor-sharp smile touches her lips. “So I took you at your word.”She turns back to me. The dreaminess is entirely gone now, replaced by that cold, monstrous pride.“That night, when the mountain had gone to bed, I swept through everything my brother had saved. Every piece of gold and jewellery my mother owned. Every last coin. And when the eastern caravan rolled out at dawn, I buried myself in it, hiding under luggage and contraband all the way across the border to the Great East. The land of my dreams.”“She was on her sickbed, Devik

EMBER’S POVAnd her whole face transforms, and this is a thing I have never once seen on my mother in twenty-six years. Before my eyes, Devika’s gaze sparks and dilates. The arrogant lines of her face melt away completely, leaving her looking startlingly helpless and almost shy. It is the most terrifying thing I have ever seen her do.Pure horror grips me as the truth finally dawns on me.My mother was in love.“Oh, he was the most beautiful thing I ever laid eyes on,” she says, smiling. “Black hair down to his shoulders. A smile like a charming devil. Gold on every single finger, and he put it on me, Ember. He draped me in things I’d only ever watched other women wear on TV. He looked at a rogue girl carrying drinks in a mountain and saw something worth claiming.” Her eyes shine, wet and far away. “I was eighteen. He took me to his bed on the Night of the Amber Eye, and I have never, before or since, felt so alive. In the morning he kissed me goodbye and rode out with the caravan, an

EMBER’S POVI blink up at him, entirely disoriented. I swipe a stray tear from my cheek, staring at the moisture on my fingertips in pure confusion.I try to recall what I just asked to forget. I reach into my mind, searching for the reason my face is wet, trying to grasp the edges of whatever just happened.Nothing.There is just a blank, smooth wall in my head. The images are gone. The words are gone. All that is left is an ache in the centre of my chest that I can no longer explain.“I’m fine,” I whisper, my voice shaky but solidifying as the fog clears. I gently pull Knox’s hands from my face, giving him a tight nod. “At least, I will be. Once she gives me the truth I just paid for.”I turn straight ahead, meeting Devika’s waiting, exhausted eyes.Something soft pours into her features, something dreamy and terrible, and for a breath the years fall off her, and she is not the woman who sold me to a monster. She’s a girl I have never met.“It all began,” she says, eyes drifting up

EMBER’S POVThe air is punched right out of my lungs.A sharp, needling pain flares in my chest, but this time, it isn’t for me. My eyes dart to Silas. His massive chest heaves, his jaw grinding so hard as he stares bitterly at his sister. Slowly, he swallows the hurt, lowers himself back into his chair, and deliberately avoids my gaze.My heart aches for him.I am used to weathering her savagery. I stopped hoping for a sliver of maternal warmth a long, long time ago.Devika is exactly what she claims to be: an unrepentant, insufferable monster. And the only thing she has ever considered a mistake is my existence.Well, if I am her only regret, she is going to tell me exactly why. Right here.I turn back to the table. Under the black wood, Knox’s large hand finds mine, his thumb pressing hard into my knuckles.I steal a glance at his reassuring grey eyes, taking the strength he offers, before I lock onto my mother once more.“You’re a real piece of shit, Devika. Such a colossal piece

EMBER’S POVI reach deep into my mind, past Knox, past Gale, past a great many memories, and I find something that brings a familiar ache back to my chest. I force my voice to remain steady when I speak.“I wager a grey afternoon with clouds gathered, and rain on the hot pavement. I was ten years old in a blue dress. The first time I’d ever worn a dress that pretty.”The scale glows bright, but does not move yet.Across the table, my mother watches it carefully, and I can see her doing the math she’s done her whole life, weighing what my truth is worth against what it costs her to bury it.Her chin comes up.She’s going to block me.“I wager my first designer dress,” my mother says, her voice hard and defensive. “The exact moment I put it on in the dressing room, and felt more alive than I had in years.”I almost smile to myself. She took the bait.I had disguised my own wager to sound like a simple, innocent memory of waiting on the porch in a pretty dress. But the house must know the
