CHAPTER 1: BETRAYED
KIMBERLY: I held the neatly wrapped gift in my hands, and headed to the Carter's. My heart was filled with excitement as I stepped into the family’s estate. The mansion was an architectural marvel of glass and stone, and the gates had been left open probably for Roland’s birthday celebration. Tonight was Roland’s birthday. And I'm here to celebrate with him. I walked through the grand entrance, exchanging greetings with a few servants. But there was something about the looks on their faces that I didn't quite understand. "Miss Walker, good evening!" Henry, one of the butlers greeted me with a polite nod. "Mr. Roland is upstairs in his quarters but he'll come downstairs soon. Do you mind waiting for him in the living room?" "No need to wait downstairs, Henry," I said with a smile. “I'll just see him briefly before the party begins.” He nodded nervously. My flat heels made no sound as I headed to the second floor where Roland's room was located. I wanted to personally deliver the gift to him before the party began. I couldn’t wait to surprise Roland. I had spent days searching for the perfect gift, a watch engraved with the words Forever Yours. It was meant to be a symbol of the feelings I had begun to develop for him and of the future we are planning to share. As I walked through the grand hallway, I fished out my phone and texted Roland. Kim: Happy Birthday, my love. Where are you? No reply. I sighed, and slipped the phone back into my purse. Maybe he was trying to put things in order. I climbed the spiral staircase, my heart racing with excitement. But as I neared his bedroom, I frowned. The door was slightly open. And I could hear the sound of a woman moaning. I froze. Another moan. Followed by a breathless giggle. I recognised the woman's voice. Tess’s giggle. My heart dropped into my stomach. No. It couldn’t be. I moved forward and peered inside. I saw Roland, my fiance and Tess, my sister tangled together in bed. Her nails raked down his back as she moaned while his thrusts went in and out of her. “Oh Roland, I really feel we're meant for each other. What is it you want in Kim that I don't have?” Tess said seductively, as she wriggled her body under Roland. Roland paused. “You know I don't have a choice in this arrangement, Tess,” Roland responded. “My relationship with Kim was an agreement between both of our families. Kim has been betrothed to me since she was sixteen. And I can't go against my grandmother’s wishes.” “That sounds so dumb. Don't tell me you want to sacrifice your future just to please your family. Kim is too boring for an exciting young man like you. We can get married and damn the consequences.” Tess cooed. “I can't take that risk, Tess. I don't want to be disinherited. I'm already in my family’s bad record. If I do anything so stupid, I can't guarantee what might happen next.” “Come on, Roland, as long as there's a marriage between our two families, the agreement still stands,” Tess continued, trying to convince him. Roland looked like he couldn't make up his mind. Even though my heart was pounding so hard and fast, and my fingers trembled, I instinctively did something that surprised even me. I recorded everything they said and did. Their act was caught on camera. Tears burned my eyes, and I was about to walk away. I took two steps backward when I heard Roland's voice call out to me. "Kim?" I stopped as my heart hammered in my chest and I could barely contain my rage. He was looking at me and he looked a bit panicked. Tess gasped, and scrambled to cover herself with the sheets. "Shit! Kim, wait…" Roland stammered, shoving Tess off him and reaching for his pants. But I was already moving. "Kim, please, just listen…" he called after me desperately. "Listen?" I laughed bitterly, my voice trembling with fury as I paused in the staircase. "To what, Roland? To your lies?" "It’s not what it looks like!" He fumbled with his shirt, his hands shaking. "Not what it looks like?" I snapped, whirling around. "I recorded it, Roland. Every second of your pathetic betrayal. So don’t you dare insult me with that excuse." Tess scoffed from behind him, flipping her blonde hair over her shoulder. "Oh, please. Stop being so dramatic, Kim. What makes you think you have a right over Roland in that manner?" My nails dug into my palms as I tried to stop myself from lunging at her "Oh so I don't have a right over my fiancé? Is that what you're trying to say, Tess?" I hissed. "You’re my sister. How could you do this?" She smirked. "Well, it’s not my fault Roland couldn’t resist me. Maybe you should’ve tried harder to keep him satisfied." I froze. "You’re disgusting," I spat, crumpling my fists. “You're nothing but a bitch.” Roland tried to take my hand. "Kim, please. Let’s talk…" I jerked away. "Don’t. Touch. Me." And then I ran. I didn't want to hear any lies he wanted to tell me. I stormed down the grand staircase, ignoring the curious stares from the servants. I just needed to get out. I needed air. I had worked so hard for my family over the years, cooking, cleaning, doing laundry and any household chores that needed to be done. Yet here I was, being used as a pawn for their selfish interest. I was raised by my grandmother and returned to live with my parents after she passed. I was fifteen years old then. So just one year after I came to live with my parents, they got me betrothed to a man I barely knew. My father's company had gone bankrupt a few years ago when I was just sixteen years old. He was desperate and needed help. When he came to the Carter's, they agreed to help him on one condition. And that was marriage between the two families. My father did not hesitate to agree and I was the pawn he had used for that game since I was the first daughter in the family. I was immediately betrothed to Roland so the two companies could merge. I'm twenty one years old now and just graduated from college. The wedding between Roland and I was scheduled to take place next Saturday. But now, how can I marry a man who betrayed me with my own sister? My vision was clouded with tears, and in my haste, I slammed into someone.CHAPTER 2: A KISS FOR A REVENGE KIMBERLY:Strong hands held my shoulders as I bumped into him. "Whoa. Easy there."It was a deep, rich voice. Smooth like silk, but commanding.I swallowed a thick lump down my throat as I tried to remain on my feet. Then I realized whose arms I had just crashed into.I looked up, and I found it difficult to breathe properly. He stood over me and looked at me with curious eyes. He was dressed in a custom-tailored charcoal suit that molded to his broad shoulders and lean, powerful frame. A black silk shirt lay open at the collar, revealing just a hint of tanned skin. His wristwatch—an exquisite Patek Philippe—glinted in his wrist. But it wasn’t his outfit that stole my breath. It was him.His jawline was well chiseled and his piercing blue hazel that held an intensity I wasn’t prepared for. He smelled of expensive cologne that made me want to hug him. This was Damien Carter, Roland’s step brother. He was the billionaire heir of Carter Enterprises. The
CHAPTER 3: TWISTING THE NARRATIVE KIMBERLY:I ignored the look on my father's face as I walked up to him.“Hey Dad, Mum!”His arms remained crossed, and his expression was as dark as the night sky. His eyes seemed to burn with fury as he faced me. “Kimberly, what the hell were you thinking?”I froze, confused. "Dad? What.."He held up his phone, and my stomach twisted in shock. On the screen was a picture of me kissing Damien Carter.Tess.Of course."Flirting with Damien in front of Roland? Have you lost your damn mind?!" His voice was sharp, and he didn't bother to hide his anger. My hands curled into fists. Of course, Tess made sure to twist the narrative. "Dad, let me explain—""Explain what? That you’re out there throwing yourself at another man like some cheap…""Don’t finish that sentence, Dad." I warned, my voice low and trembling with barely restrained anger. "You have no idea what happened.""Tess told me everything and the proof is here. How could you embarrass Roland in
CHAPTER 4: YOU'LL MARRY DAMIEN KIMBERLY:“What is it?” Jasmine asked, seeing the puzzled look on my face.I turned my phone screen toward her so she could read the message.“I think you should go.”“But Jas ..”“Just go babe. What's the worst that can happen? Just as I told you earlier, be smart and take advantage of the situation,” Jasmine advised me.I nodded. My fingers trembled as I put on my shoes and combed my curled hair. I barely glanced at the mirror before I hurried off. When I got to the Carter's estate, I was led into the drawing room—one of the smaller reception lounges, but still grand with its high ceilings, ornate chandeliers, and marble floors that gleamed under the lights. There, seated like a queen on her throne, was Mrs. Evelyn Carter. She wore a deep emerald gown that looked like it belonged in a museum, and her silver-gray hair was styled to perfection. Her piercing eyes, was sharp as razors, and settled on me the moment I entered. Damien sat beside her on the
CHAPTER 5: COMMOTION AT THE REGISTRY KIMBERLY:I didn't notice her earlier, didn't even know when she came in. But when I heard her venomous voice and felt her firm hand on my shirt collar, I knew something was about to change.I held her hand and peeled her fingers off my shirt collar. “What are you doing, ma’am? Take your hands off me.”Everly halted in her tracks and turned. “What's the meaning of this, Barbra?”Barbra is Roland's mother. She glared at me. “She had it all planned out. She connived with her sister and set Roland up so she could marry the heir to Carter's Dynasty. Don't you get it? Roland has said several times that Tess seduced him.”Evelyn’s voice was low and cold. “Behave yourself Barbra and walk away. You should be ashamed of what your son did. But instead, you're here defending him. I guess apples don't fall far from the tree.”Barbra seemed furious. “If you succeed in marrying Damien, I will make your life a living hell.”I looked at her and nodded. “Challeng
CHAPTER 6: LET ME HANDLE THIS KIMBERLY:“Put your weapon down,” As the door slammed open, a number of Corps rushed into the hall but Roland was clever as he quickly grabbed my waist and pulled me to himself, pointing the knife at my chest as if he was about to stab me."Roland, please, put the knife down," I begged with trembling voice. I was very scared and kept my eyes shut.Roland’s arm tightened around my waist, and the tip of the knife pressed harder against my chest. "I said nobody moves!" he barked with clenched jaw. His eyes were bloodshot, and he looked like a madman.Damien tried to intervene, but Mrs. Carter extended her hand, stopping him. "Let me handle this," she said, her voice calm but firm. I opened my eyes to look at her. She looked so elegant but the choas in the hall contrasted with her personality. "Roland, sweetheart, please, listen to me.""No! You don’t believe me, Grandma," Roland growled. "I love her. I was stupid—Tess tricked me. I didn’t mean to betray
CHAPTER 7: THE WEDDING RING KIMBERLY:Damien placed his hand on mine, his touch warm but firm. It seemed like he was claiming something that was already his. "Let me treat you to dinner, Mrs. Carter." he murmured as he opened the passenger side for me.I managed a smile. "Thank you Damien.”“Why are you thanking me? You're my wife.”I rolled my eyes. “It's not like we don't know what this is.”He looked at me, his expression serious. "Kimberly, I'm a businessman. Whatever business I decide to undertake, I do it to the fullest.”I slipped in, and sat quietly. I glanced around at the beautiful interior of the car while Damien rounded to his side and slid behind the wheel. “Are you taking this marriage serious?”He glanced my way. "Yes, Mrs. Carter."“Oh! Well, time will tell.”He smirked but didn't say more.I had a lot on my mind as I looked out the window. The battle line had just been drawn in the Carter's family. Will Damien be able to stand up for me when the heat start coming?
CHAPTER 8: BARBRA AND TESS KIMBERLY: Damien hurriedly finished up his food and turned to me. “I have to go. I have an appointment with some business associates. Take the keys. You can take the car. I will take a cab. This key opens the door of my apartment.I nodded and took the keys from him. This was the first time he took me out and he has to abandon me in the restaurant?I sighed as I watched him leave. Then I got up and left the restaurant. Then got into his car and drove to Carter's estate.I pulled the car carefully into the garage, the engine purring to a soft stop. My hands gripped the steering wheel for a moment longer than necessary as I thought about the events of today. In just one day, a lot has happened.I stepped out of the car, and walked into the silent night. It was dark but I could see Barbra Carter standing at the entrance. She crossed her arms and curled her lips into a sneer. I took a deep breath, squared my shoulders and started towards her. I barely made i
CHAPTER 9: JUST AFTER HIS MONEY KIMBERLY:I was just beginning to drift off when I heard the knock. It was soft at first. I rolled over, hoping whoever it was would just go away. But it came again and again.Groaning, I threw off the covers and padded across the room, rubbing my eyes. When I opened the door, I saw Janet, a maid standing there."Miss Kim," Janet whispered, wringing her hands nervously. "Sorry to disturb you. Mr. Kelvin wants to see you downstairs."I blinked. "Kelvin? Now?"She nodded apologetically. "He said it’s important."I suppressed a sigh. I had grown up visiting the Carters often enough to know everyone here. Kelvin was my father in-law.I didn’t want to displease him. "Alright. I’ll come."Janet gave a small bow and hurried off.I closed the door, grabbed Damien's robe, and slipped it over my camisole and shorts. My feet felt like lead as I followed the soft lights down the grand staircase, the house eerily quiet except for the ticking of the grandfather clo
CHAPTER 22: DO YOU WANT THIS MARRIAGE?KIMBERLY: I followed Grandma Evelyn through the back corridor. My heart was still pounding from the chaos earlier, but looking at her calm presence, I felt soothed. She led me outside, past the patio, and into the garden. It was quiet out there, and very peaceful. The roses were in bloom, and smelled so good. She sat down on a wooden bench shaded by a willow tree and patted the space beside her."Sit, Kim," she said gently.I obeyed without a word, folding my hands in my lap as the breeze played with my hair. She looked ahead at the hedges for a while before speaking. "You know, you remind me a lot of myself when I first got married."I smiled. "Really?""Yes. I married into this family as a young woman with no allies and too many expectations. Your grandfather was as cold as Damien, perhaps even worse. I cried more nights than I care to count." Her voice grew thoughtful as if she was relieving the memories. "But I learned something that chang
CHAPTER 21: STAY AWAY FROM MY WIFE VENUS:Roland winced and staggered back, holding his face with his hand after that punch landed on his face.“Stay away from my wife,” came a grumpy male voice.I turned around. Of course, it was Damien. He stood with a scowl on his face and his fists still looked ready to attack.“Damien? No, please.” I wasn't expecting that reaction from him. A few seconds ago, he had acted like I meant nothing to him. But now, here he was, reacting over a minor conversation.Roland, recovering quickly, wiped the corner of his mouth and sneered. "Wow. Big brother finally shows some balls. Is this a way to prove to your wife that you love her ? By throwing punches?""When you tell my wife that I'm not capable of love, what's your intention, Roland. Are you planning to seduce her? You don’t get to talk about love," Damien spat. "Especially not to my wife.""Oh please," Roland scoffed. "You're only territorial when your pride's on the line. You don’t love her. You do
CHAPTER 20: YOU'RE RUTHLESS KIMBERLY:My eyes were dry, but inside, I was weeping."It doesn't matter that Damien has been nothing but insensitive since we got married,” I muttered under my breath. “No one has to know about that. We'll sort out our differences between the two of us.”I sniffed in annoyance. "And then Roland? Really? What does he take me for? I'm stuck with Damien and will never get back together with him, no matter what happens.”I sat on the edge of the bed, my chin in my hands as I thought about how my world keeps spinning like a wheel.I shook my head, biting my bottom lip hard enough to taste blood. My phone buzzed in my purse, but I didn't bother to check it. I wasn’t ready for any more drama. I just wanted nothing but peace right now. I wanted to spend a few minutes without anyone trying to crush my soul. The door creaked open. And I look up. The scent of Damien’s cologne was enough to tell me who it was before his voice did."Kim."I blinked and looked up. H
CHAPTER 19: ROLAND IS BACK KIMBERLY:"Roland?" I whispered, more to myself than anyone else.He stood tall and confident, and leaned casually against the stair rail like he wasn't bothered about anything in this world. My stomach twisted in fear. I still had not forgotten that incident at the registry where he almost drove a knife through my chest. How was I sure he won't try to kill me now?I had assumed I'd be free of him for a while—at least a few months. But here he was, back at the mansion just two days after the incident. Two days was all it took for the Carter family to flex their muscle and get him out.I took a deep breath and forced myself to ascend the steps, hoping to breeze past him like he was invisible."Kim," he called softly, catching my wrist before I could brush past. "You look... tired. Everything okay?""Let go, Roland," I muttered, trying not to sound as frustrated as I felt. I just wanted to be alone since no one wanted me. “Stop acting like you care.”"Why ar
CHAPTER 18: A CHAOTIC DAY KIMBERLY: Damien didn’t see me immediately. So I took a breath, stood slowly, and folded my arms. When Damien’s eyes finally landed on me, his steps faltered. The woman beside him looked from him to me and raised her eyebrows. "You didn’t tell me you were expecting a visitor." Damien didn't respond. I forced myself to smile and spoke in a calm voice. "Good morning, Damien. I brought you breakfast." His jaw tightened. "Kim. I didn't know you.." "Would barge in on you?" I interrupted. “I'm very sorry about that.” He nodded. I expected him to make an explanation or introduce his companion and I. But he didn't. "Well, I wanted to surprise you. But clearly, I’m the one who got surprised." The woman stepped back a little, sensing tension. I looked at her and then back at him. He didn’t say anything. I gestured to the box on the table. "You probably already ate, though. Right?" He glanced at the box but didn’t touch it. "Yeah. I went to brunch." I
CHAPTER 17: TRYING TO MAKE AMENDS KIMBERLY:I couldn't help but feel frustrated. My head was filled with thoughts of things that could go wrong if I continued to fight with Damien. I wasn't really going to let this marriage spiral into a battlefield just days after it began. I already had Barbra breathing fire down my neck. And Roland could be back anytime. Who knows what games he might want to play?If Damien joined that list... God, I’d be fighting a war I couldn’t win.I sighed in frustration and rubbed my forehead. "No," I whispered to myself. "I’m not going to lose this."I thought about everything Grandma Evelyn had said to me last night. One of which was that I had as much right as Barbra in the Carter's family.“You have to stand your ground in this family, Kimberly.” But I have to use wisdom. After all, Barbra was still my step mother-in-law.So I made up my mind. I was going to make Damien breakfast. Something thoughtful. That's my own little way of saying, ‘I'm not here
CHAPTER 16: A COLD WAR KIMBERLY:I've always hated spiders but not enough to scream the way I just did.It sounded raw, loud, and panicked. I was naked, dripping wet, and cornered in the bathroom. The spider on the wall was black, hairy, and huge and had no business existing, let alone existing near me. But I could've squashed it with a single blow. But I had something else on my mind.Grandma had made me an irresistible offer last night and I wanted to start seducing my husband. The bathroom door burst open.Damien stood there, wide-eyed, slightly disoriented, but instantly alert. His chest heaved like he’d run a marathon to get to me.“Kim?” he barked. “What happened?!”I made my hands trembled as I pointed a shaky finger toward the wall.He followed my gaze. When his eyes landed on the spider, he groaned.“Seriously? That thing?” he asked, half amused, half exasperated.I didn’t respond. I pretended like I was shivering in fear. Don't forget that I was still naked.Damien stood
CHAPTER 15: SHE FROZE ME OUT DAMIEN:It was a big deal for me coming home to Kim's cold attitude. After the death of Ella, my childhood sweetheart, it has been nothing but casual flings for me. I don't have time to deal with issues like this.I picked up my car keys and left after I had told Kim off.I drove to Cozy bar in the heart of Sunview to hang out with my friends.Jerry and Ethan were already seated when I arrived.“Bro, you look like you swallowed a bag of nails,” Jerry muttered, sliding a glass of whiskey toward me after I sat down.I grunted and reached for it. “Give me a break, Jerry. I've only just got here.”Ethan leaned back in his seat. “You ought to look happy, Damien. You're no longer in the bachelor list. Or is there trouble in paradise already?”I sighed and continued sipping the wine.“The fact that you're keeping mute about it makes me worried. Did you have a fight with Kim?” Jerry asked.“You guys know me, I don't take shit,” I muttered before I tossed the sho
CHAPTER 14: THIS FEELS LIKE A TRAPCLAIRE:“Oh my dear girl, what has my grandson done now?”As soon as Grandma Evelyn said that, tears gathered at the back of my eyes again.I closed the door behind her and turned away quickly, wiping my face with the sleeve of my shirt.“I was just about to go to bed,” she said, lowering herself to a seat on the chaise. L“But I asked one of the maids if you’d come down for dinner. She said you hadn’t.”“Oh,” I said quickly, forcing a tiny smile. “I already ate. I wasn’t really hungry for more.”She raised an eyebrow. “Are you sure about that, Kimberly.”I swallowed hard. “Yes Grandma.”“Well, I know everything that goes on in this house,” she said, sounding very gentle but firm. “You think I don’t notice the way Barbra bullies you? The way you shrink whenever she enters the room? I've been watching from the distance.”I stayed quiet.“She treats you like an intruder, I know,” Grandma continued. “She’s been doing that to people she doesn't like for y
