CHAPTER 2: A KISS FOR A REVENGE

KIMBERLY:

Strong hands held my shoulders as I bumped into him. "Whoa. Easy there."

It was a deep, rich voice. Smooth like silk, but commanding.

I swallowed a thick lump down my throat as I tried to remain on my feet. Then I realized whose arms I had just crashed into.

I looked up, and I found it difficult to breathe properly.

He stood over me and looked at me with curious eyes. He was dressed in a custom-tailored charcoal suit that molded to his broad shoulders and lean, powerful frame. A black silk shirt lay open at the collar, revealing just a hint of tanned skin. His wristwatch—an exquisite Patek Philippe—glinted in his wrist. But it wasn’t his outfit that stole my breath.

It was him.

His jawline was well chiseled and his piercing blue hazel that held an intensity I wasn’t prepared for. He smelled of expensive cologne that made me want to hug him.

This was Damien Carter, Roland’s step brother.

He was the billionaire heir of Carter Enterprises.

The man exudes class but he was notorious for his reputation with women.

And I had just thrown myself against his chest like a damsel in distress.

“Why are you leaving in a hurry, Kim?” Damien drawled, his deep, velvety voice laced with amusement as he glanced between Roland and I. Roland had come after me but halted when I collided with his brother.

I took a deep breath as my heart continued to race from the betrayal I had just witnessed. My emotions were a mess and I was completely overwhelmed.

And then suddenly, an idea struck me.

A terrible, reckless idea.

Without thinking, I fisted the lapels of his suit jacket, stood on my toes, and crashed my lips against his.

His body went rigid. And his eyes widened. But he didn’t pull away.

His lips were warm, firm, and for the briefest moment, I tasted the scent of whiskey and mint on his breath.

Then, just as quickly as I had kissed him, I pulled back and smirked.

From the corner of my eyes, I saw Roland's mouth drop agape.

“What are you doing, Kim?” Roland asked as he rushed after me.

I turned to him. “What does it look like I'm doing? I'm done with you, Roland.”

“I'm sorry, Kim, please.”

But I didn't listen. I turned around and fled out of the Carter estate, leaving the two men staring at each other.

I stood at the bus stop and waited for a bus. But my phone continued to buzz. Roland was calling me but I ignored his calls. He sent text messages but I didn't bother to read it.

Suddenly, a sports car pulled to a halt in front of me.

“Get in,” he ordered in his signature velvety voice.

I hesitated. “No I can't. I'm waiting for the ride I ordered.”

But being a businessman who never gave up, Damien convinced me to get into his sport car and I obeyed without arguing further.

“What the hell was that?” Damien’s voice was low, as he talked to me, not taking his attention off the road.

I glanced at him, and my chin lifted in defiance. “Nothing. Roland cheated on me with Tess and kissing you was my own little way of getting back at him. I'm sorry if you feel disrespected.”

His lips twitched, but his expression didn't change. He took a quick glance at me. “So you used me to get revenge?”

“I'm sorry, Mr. Carter.”

“Kimberly Walker,” he mused, tilting his head slightly. “You really are full of guts. But I liked the feel of your lips on mine. Fierce, just the way I like it.”

I shuddered. “Don’t read too much into it, Mr. Carter. Just a spur-of-the-moment thing.”

His blue eyes darkened as he took another quick glance at me. “Spur-of-the-moment? Darling, I’ve kissed enough women in my life and none made me tingle the way you did. Whatever the hell you think you were doing, you've gotten yourself a lifetime supply of my constant kissing.”

My stomach twisted, and I clenched my fists. “I’m your brother's fiancee, Mr. Carter. Please let's pretend this never happened.”

But when his fingers brushed my thighs, I felt it everywhere.

He looked at me and smirked. “You think you can just kiss me and walk away?” he murmured, amusement curling at the edges of his voice. “That’s not how this works, especially not when yours is so different from every other kiss I've had.”

My breath hitched. “I’m not one of your little conquests, Damien.”

His smirk deepened. “Oh, sweetheart, you just made yourself my next obsession.”

I swallowed hard. This is bad. This is very, very bad.

I removed his hand from my lap as he turned into our driveway. “Thanks for the ride, Mr. Carter.”

“Oh don't mention it, Kim. I will be doing this a lot in the coming days.”

I stepped out of the car and headed to our front yard without looking back. My parents stood in front of our house and the look on my Dad's face was enough to make someone have a heart attack.

Kim had stepped out twenty minutes ago, saying she was going to the restroom, but she hadn’t come back.At first, I thought maybe she ran into someone she knew or got caught up in small talk. But twenty minutes? Nah. That didn’t sit right with me. I tried to shake it off, but my gut wouldn’t calm down.“Excuse me, gentlemen,” I said to the group of CEOs at my table. They were talking about some merger, but I couldn’t focus anymore.“Go ahead, Damien,” one of them said, smiling. “We’ll hold the fort.”I nodded, loosened my tie, and walked out of the banquet hall. The moment the doors closed behind me, the noise faded, replaced by the soft hum of the hallway air conditioning.I walked straight to the restroom and pushed the door open. “Kim?” I called out, scanning every stall.

You look… tense. Is everything okay?”I tried to stand straight, tried to keep my composure, but my knees felt weak. The air in that small space suddenly felt heavy, like there wasn’t enough oxygen.
