Chloe's POV

"Chloe?" Her voice cracked. She was trying to turn in the wheelchair, trying to see past Vincent, trying to find her daughter. "Chloe, where are you? Don't leave me. Please don't leave me. Chloe—Chloe—"

I heard her.

I heard every broken syllable. Every desperate plea. Every shattered piece of my name falling from her lips like prayers, she no longer had the strength to finish.

And I couldn't answer.

I pressed my forehead harder against the cold glass—so hard it hurt, so hard I thoug

  • TRAPPED IN MY ENEMY’S BED   Chapter Nineteen- Married to a nightmare

Chloe's POVSpencer was still waiting for me to take his hand.I was still deciding whether I would rather endure the consequences of refusing or risk developing a permanent facial tic from pretending to be his loving wife."Do you want to explain that to my father?""No, but I'd be happy to explain it to a judge."He leaned closer."Chloe, I swear—""You're swearing a lot for a married man.""Take my hand."I looked at his outstretched palm. Then I looked at his face.He looked furious.I smiled sweetly."Ask nicely."For a moment, I thought he might actually refuse to play along. Then he leaned down, bringing his face close enough that I could see the tiny scar near his left eyebrow."Please," he said through clenched teeth.I blinked. That was unexpected. It was also the least convincing please I had ever heard in my life.I glanced at his outstretched hand. Then I looked at him."You're enjoying this, aren't you?" he asked through his teeth."Immensely.""Chloe.""Spencer."He lea

  • TRAPPED IN MY ENEMY’S BED   Chapter Eighteen- A little too much attitude

Chloe's POVFor a moment, Spencer simply stared at me, as though he was beginning to regret every decision that had brought us to this point. Unfortunately for him, I had no intention of making his life easier, especially when he seemed determined to make mine a living nightmare. If he expected me to play the part of his obedient wife without a fight, he was about to discover just how badly he had misjudged me."You don't touch me unnecessarily."His eyes narrowed."Define unnecessarily.""Any touching that isn't required to prevent me from falling down the stairs, being hit by a moving vehicle, or dying in some other unfortunate accident brought about by your family's terrible influence.""You're unbelievable.""And yet, here we are."He dragged a hand over his face.I had the distinct impression that I was giving him a headache.Good.Perhaps the next time he considered kidnapping and drugging a woman for making noise, he would remember me."Anything else?" he asked."Yes. You will

  • TRAPPED IN MY ENEMY’S BED   Chapter Seventeen- The perfect wife

Chloe's POVHis face changed. The moment the word no left my mouth, whatever patience Spencer McCartney had been pretending to possess disappeared. He stood in front of me, his jaw tight, his eyes cold, and his bare chest rising and falling beneath the white towel he had tied around his waist. Water still glistened on his skin, but the man looking down at me was no longer the infuriatingly relaxed man who had walked out of the bathroom a few minutes ago. This was the man who had drugged me because my screaming disturbed his evening. The man who had taken my blood while I was unconscious. The man who had just informed me that my mother's medical treatment depended on my behaviour. And now he wanted me to pretend to be his wife.Absolutely not."Did you not hear me?" he asked."Oh, I heard you perfectly. My ears are working beautifully, thank you.""Then you should understand what I'm asking you to do.""I understand that your father is downstairs and that, for reasons known only to you

  • TRAPPED IN MY ENEMY’S BED   Chapter Sixteen-The game begins

Chloe's POVThe first thing I registered was the softness beneath me.Not the hard marble floor. Not the leather seat of the car. Softness. Silk sheets. A pillow that smelled faintly of cedar and something cold.I opened my eyes slowly, my lashes heavy, my head pounding with a dull, persistent ache. The ceiling above me was familiar—high, white, with a single ornate light fixture I had stared at for hours the first time I was trapped here.I'm back. The thought settled over me like a weight. I was back in Spencer's bedroom. Back in the cage.I sat up slowly, my body protesting every movement, and looked down at myself. The dress I had been wearing was gone. In its place was a nightgown—soft, cream-colored silk that fell to my knees. It wasn't mine. I had never seen it before. My breath caught.Someone had undressed me.Someone had touched me while I was unconscious. My hands flew to my chest, my stomach, my hips—checking, searching, trying to remember something, anything. But there wa

  • TRAPPED IN MY ENEMY’S BED   Chapter Fifteen - The guilt I couldn’t bury

Spencer's POVShe slumped against me, a dead weight, and for a long moment, I simply held her.I looked down at her face—the tear tracks still wet on her cheeks, the dark circles under her eyes, the stubborn set of her jaw even in unconsciousness—and something in my chest twisted. Something I didn't have time for. Something I didn't have room for. Guilt, maybe. Or something worse.I looked at the syringe in my hand—the needle capped, the plastic still warm from my palm.I told myself it didn't matter. I told myself she was a means to an end. I told myself that saving Olivia was worth any cost, any cruelty, any line I had to cross. I had crossed so many already. What was one more? But still—I didn't let go right away.I adjusted my grip, cradling her against my chest, and carried her to my bed. She was lighter than she should have been. I laid her down gently—far more gently than I had touched anyone in years—and stood over her, looking. She looked smaller in sleep. Softer. The fury an

  • TRAPPED IN MY ENEMY’S BED   Chapter Fourteen- The Secret Behind Olivia

Chloe's POVWho the hell is Olivia? The question echoed inside my skull, louder than the residual ringing from the gunshot earlier, louder than my mother’s broken voice still trapped in my ears. I sat on the edge of his bed with his fingers still locked around my jaw, forced to look up into eyes that held nothing human, and the name kept turning over and over like a blade I couldn’t put down.Olivia.Someone he would destroy the world for. Someone he would put a gun to a disabled woman’s head for. Someone he would lock me in this room and call me his property for. The sheer intensity in his voice when he said her name had been different from every other cold, sarcastic, empty thing he had thrown at me. It had weight. It had teeth. It was the first thing that had sounded almost like feeling.Spencer’s grip on my jaw loosened just enough that I could have pulled away if I tried. He didn’t look at me the way he had a second ago. His gaze drifted past my face, unfocused, as if he were rea
