Chapter 1

Author: Lucky Seven
The day Dominic Hayes decided to go straight, he took me to bed with such intensity that the world seemed to spin. I stared at the shredded lingerie on the floor, momentarily speechless.

"Dominic, is the world ending?" I asked.

His insatiable demeanor made me believe there might not be a tomorrow. Dominic was smoking, his heavy-lidded eyes giving him a distant, dreamy look.

"Violet, if I were to break things off with you, you wouldn't get all dramatic about it, would you?"

Though he spoke with the cigarette between his lips, making it sound like a casual joke, his words sent an icy chill down my spine.

After ten years with Dominic, I knew his temperament well. He liked obedience, yet appreciated defiance and rebellion.

Just like now, I took the half-smoked cigarette from his hand as I suppressed my churning emotions, and raised an eyebrow languidly.

"Dominic, do you think I'm still 18 years old?"

If Dominic had abandoned me when I was 18, I would have stormed into his club without any regard for my own life.

However, I was 28 years old now.

I felt somewhat choked up, unable to finish my sentence. Dominic ruffled my hair and stubbed out the cigarette that nearly burned my fingers.

"Violet, this is where it ends," he said. "Stop smoking. Stop treating your body like it doesn't matter. We're not kids anymore. You can't keep living like this."

In that moment, I was completely stunned. There were unspoken rules for breakups at 28 years old. The first to shed tears would lose it all, and smeared makeup would only broadcast my defeat for the world to see.

I pretended to be casual as I reached for my jacket on the floor, ready to leave. Nonetheless, Dominic's arm hooked around me, pulling me back into his embrace.

Storm clouds gathered like spilled ink across the sky outside the window. Rain hung in the air, ready to fall at any moment.

Dominic's kisses fell on my back as he skillfully adjusted the straps of my dress. He bit my earlobe just like he always used to do.

"Hear that?" he whispered.

I didn't answer, but he wasn't bothered. His tone carried the easy authority of someone used to having his commands obeyed without question.

"It's going to rain. Stay a bit longer, hmm?"

After ten years together, we'd learned to smooth all our conflicts into a veneer of calm. Dominic had probably forgotten that my temperament wasn't just for show.

It should be a clean break with no loose ends if he wanted to end it. I straightened my back and pushed away his sculpture-like, handsome face, giving a slight laugh.

"How long do you think this rain will last?" I asked.

How much longer could he keep me around anyway when his heart belonged to someone else?

Dominic's brow twitched at that moment, but he quickly composed himself. His introduction of that woman was rather simple.

"Violet, you're a smart woman," he said. "Her name is Lily Morgan. She's different from you.

"You can be with me without needing a title, and you don't mind the mess we create together. She can't do that. She's too innocent."

I felt choked up again, looking down at the disarray around us, suddenly unsure what to say. What did he mean I could be with him without needing commitment?

I thought about the black stockings, high heels, and slip dresses. Dominic had dressed me according to his preferences for so many years. Now that I'd grown accustomed to this seductive style, he suddenly found it vulgar?

In that moment, I wanted to confront Dominic. Yet he placed a finger to his lips, signaling me to be quiet.

He got a call from that woman named Lily.

"Dominic, didn't you say you'd come pick me up?" her voice came through the phone. "I'm alone and really scared..."

Dominic's gaze remained fixed on me when he learned that I was leaving Northbrook."Come back to Westbrook. Didn't you always love that lakeside villa? I've already had someone—"I cut him off. "Dominic, do you really think I would go with you?"Even if Lily had been acting on Maxwell's instructions, the facts remained. He had cheated on me, seamlessly transitioned to a new relationship, and driven me away. Moreover, Lily had already become deeply invested in their relationship. When she heard me speak this way, she gently took my hand. She said, "Violet, we'll definitely send you an invitation when Dominic and I get married someday."Dominic's breath caught when he heard those words. Standing half in shadow, his eyes held no trace of amusement. Instead, they reflected a profound sense of loss."We'll see. Marriage suddenly doesn't seem that interesting to me. We might as well enjoy ourselves for a few more years while we're young."The moment he finished speaking, the color dr

I knocked on the study door.Maxwell's frameless glasses perched on his nose. His gentle appearance had receded, revealing a sharp, unapproachable edge. After studying him briefly, I suddenly realized that my longtime impression of Maxwell as gentle, rigid, and rule-abiding might have been completely wrong."Maxwell, let me see your phone."He looked startled but handed it over without hesitation. My fingerprint could unlock it directly. As my fingers brushed the edge of the frame, I detected a faint smell of cigarettes. Maxwell had cleaned up all traces meticulously, except for the one photo of me in his gallery. Both Dominic and I were still dirt poor that year. After his leg was broken in a fight, I carried him all the way to the hospital. My white sneakers had turned yellow and were soaked through. My jeans were bulging, and my hair was pulled back in a simple ponytail. One look at the photo would make anyone's heart ache.I looked just like how Lily appeared to me that day

The next day, Dominic caught Maxwell leaving my room. Dominic's brow was furrowed, and his face turned ashen.Despite the visible kiss marks on his own neck, he demanded, "Violet, what exactly is your relationship with him?"His question ignited a fire within me. Who was he to question my affairs?I didn't notice Maxwell pause in the hallway. He was waiting to hear my answer.I simply said, "It's a relationship you don't need to know about."Maxwell and I could be engaged, or we could just be family, or friends. In any case, it certainly wasn't a relationship Dominic had any right to question.I was starving and wanted to go downstairs to ask Maxwell for a glass of milk. Yet as I turned, Dominic grabbed my wrist. He lowered his head, switching to a gentle tone. "Violet, would you help me with my tie?"I raised my eyebrows in surprise, glancing at Lily standing timidly by the door. "Can't she help you?""Her hands are too clumsy. No one ties a Pratt knot as nicely as you do."

I discovered something after my shower. Dominic and Lily's room was right next to mine. The Ingram residence wasn't particularly well-insulated for sound. I could hear passionate kissing from next door right after stepping out of the bathroom."Dominic, why haven't you thrown that lingerie away yet? Doesn't it disgust you?"Dominic pressed Lily's head against him but lowered his eyes. His entire demeanor turned icy cold."I just wanted to remind Violet how pathetic she looked begging beneath me. How could someone as weak as Maxwell possibly satisfy her? She's just latched onto the first man she could find to make me jealous."I found his words almost laughable. I had more class than to find another man just to make him jealous.Turning around, I collided with Maxwell's dark gaze. He had come to bring me hot milk. This time, however, was different. He silently placed the milk on the table and turned to leave.Maxwell had a habit of deliberately slowing his pace when he was angry

Emotions ran high that day. I couldn't even look Maxwell in the eye when I thought about everything I'd done to him.Maxwell remained as he'd always been. He was refined and elegant, presenting his gentle yet detached demeanor to the world.Only when bringing me milk each night would he linger at my door. He would even casually ask, "Do you need to release some tension today, Ms. Ingram?"Only God knew how tempting he looked in that V-neck silk pajama top, with those bite marks still visible on his lips. But I, Violet Ingram, wasn't someone easily swayed.Gulping down the hot milk, I firmly shut Maxwell out.Tonight, he came knocking as usual. I lazily raised an eyebrow, ready to preemptively say, "Not interested." That was when Maxwell tilted his head, gesturing toward the two people sitting on the couch downstairs. Dominic had arrived, but not alone. He'd brought Lily with him.My heart felt like it was being squeezed by invisible hands, and I could feel something shattering

As Maxwell placed me back in the passenger seat, he stated flatly, "He didn't take proper care of you these past ten years."It wasn't a question—it was a statement of fact.I wanted to argue defiantly, but my nose stung with unshed tears, my resolve crumbling. The warm, soft feeling against my feet was like an addiction I couldn't quit. It made me want to burrow into Maxwell's embrace and have a good, long cry.The car broke through the curtain of rain, continuing to move forward.Seeing my reddened eyes, Maxwell said gently, "Ms. Ingram, the best way to forget the previous chapter is to begin the next one."I always acted on impulse when I was with Maxwell. The moment he finished speaking, I commanded, "Pull over somewhere."His hand on the steering wheel paused. Maxwell looked confused, but he still complied.I climbed over the center console the second he pulled the handbrake and straddled his lap. Maxwell tensed nervously, trying to lean back. The extra space he created on
