Chapter 4: A Dangerous Touch

Lyra’s blood ran cold.

Panicked, she tried to yank her wrist out of his steel grip, but Caelum’s fingers were an iron vise. His heightened tactile senses were terrifyingly sharp—he didn't need eyes to read the raised, crescent-and-sun emblem embedded into her flesh.

"It’s nothing!" Lyra lied, her heart hammering against her ribs like a sledgehammer. "It's a surgical scar! From an old accident!"

"Do not lie to me!" Caelum growled, his Alpha aura flaring so violently that the glass vials on the medical table rattled. He pulled her wrist closer to his face, his nostrils flaring as he inhaled the scent of her skin right over the mark. "This isn't a scar. It’s an ancestral crest. A royal bloodline mark."

He shifted his grip, sliding his broad hand up her arm, pulling her stumbling forward until she collapsed into his lap. Straddling his massive thighs, Lyra pressed her hands against his hard chest to keep her balance, her breath coming in shallow, frantic gasps.

Caelum lowered his head, his nose tracing the line of her throat up to her jaw, inhaling deeply.

"Your blood... it isn't just neutralizing the silver," Caelum murmured, his voice sounding dazed, almost intoxicated. "When you touched me, the poison in my spine receded. No ordinary physician possesses royal healing energy."

"Caelum, please—"

"Who are you?" Caelum demanded, his voice dropping into a low, gravelly command that resonated straight through her bones. His Alpha command vibrated against her soul, demanding absolute truth. "What family do you belong to, Lyra?"

Lyra bit her bottom lip so hard she tasted copper, fighting the overwhelming biological urge to submit to his royal Alpha voice. Her secret was the only thing keeping her alive. If the pack elders discovered that the last surviving heir of the Sun-Marked royal lineage was inside their citadel, they would execute her before dawn to prevent a civil war.

"I am a nameless rogue," Lyra whispered defiance into his ear, her eyes flashing with a sudden, golden ember. "My family was slaughtered when I was a child. I have no pack, no title, and no throne. The only thing I have is my medical knowledge."

Caelum went completely still.

He could hear the raw, bleeding truth in her voice. He felt the tremor in her body—not from fear of him, but from the deep, buried trauma of a horrific past.

Slowly, Caelum’s aggressive posture softened. The iron grip on her arm relaxed, his large hand sliding gently down to cup the back of her head, entangling his long fingers in her soft hair.

"Slaughtered?" Caelum rasped softly, his thumb gently stroking her cheekbone. "Who did it?"

"It doesn't matter," Lyra choked out, looking down at his chest, her hands unconsciously smoothing over his scarred skin. "They are dead. And I am just a doctor trying to survive."

A dark, lethal promise settled over Caelum’s features. He leaned in, pressing his forehead against hers.

"It does matter," Caelum growled softly. "Because you are my mate now. Anyone who has ever made you bleed will answer to my claws."

The raw, possessive sincerity in his voice struck Lyra like a physical blow. She looked at his blindfolded face, at the fierce, protective line of his jaw. For years, she had carried the weight of her dead family and her secret sanctuary all alone. Now, this terrifying, dangerous King was offering to tear the world apart for her.

The mate bond flared brightly, a wave of liquid heat rushing straight down to her core.

Before she could process the feeling, Caelum tilted his head, his warm, full lips finding hers in the dark.

The kiss was electric.

Lyra gasped against his mouth, and Caelum took instant advantage, his tongue sliding past her teeth to taste her deeply. A soft, pathetic whimper escaped Lyra’s throat as his hands slid down her back, pressing her pelvis firmly against the rigid, burning heat between his thighs.

The scent of crushed cedar, rain, and wild jasmine filled the room. Caelum groaned, a deep, animalistic sound that vibrated straight through her chest. He pulled her closer, his teeth lightly nipping at her bottom lip before soothing it with his tongue.

“You’ll drive me insane.” Caelum growled into her mouth, his breath hot and ragged.

"Caelum... the silver..." Lyra breathed, her hands clutching his wide shoulders as her body throbbed with unmistakable need.

"To hell with the silver," Caelum growled, sliding his hand down to lift her skirt, his hot palm sliding up the smooth skin of her inner thigh.

BOOM!

A sudden, deafening explosion rocked the citadel walls, shattering two of the high stained-glass windows in the chamber. Cold wind and snow billowed into the room.

Lyra gasped, tearing her lips away from his as the heavy alarm sirens began to wail across the fortress.

"Alpha!" Beta Marcus’s frantic voice echoed through the telepathic pack link, loud enough that Lyra could hear the static spillover. "We have a breach at the lower gate! It’s your uncle, Silas—he’s brought three armed council envoys and a squad of elite enforcers! They are demanding entry!"

Caelum’s eyes narrowed beneath his blindfold. The dark, sensual lover vanished in an instant, replaced by the terrifying apex predator.

"Why is Silas here?" Caelum growled into the pack link, his jaw hardening like stone.

"He received a tip that you hired an unregistered rogue physician!" Marcus reported, panic in his voice. "He’s brought a Silver Detector squad to inspect your quarters! If they find her, they’re going to execute her on the spot for treason!"

"When that blast went off... my heart stopped, Lyra."He leaned up, placing his forehead against hers, his hot breath fanning across her lips. The air was thick and heady with the scent of dark chocolate and cedarwood, coiling around her senses."You are my absolute world," Caelum purred, a low, animalistic sound vibr

He was serving as the head of the table. It was a massive silver signet ring that pulsated with a faint, corrupted black glow, and it was sitting on his thumb. It is Caelum! There you are, at long last! Elder Vance yelled out while bending his head ever-so-slightly, yet his dark eyes continued to fixate on Lyra with a lustful gaze. Moreover, you brought the Sun Princess!
