CHAPTER ONE
THE COMING
The staircase of the Adams’ mansion was structured in a curvy manner. The tiled floor shined faintly under the florescent light. Despite the beauty of the architectural style, the mansion felt void tonight – too peaceful, as if holding its breath. The air was thick and tense, conveying a sense of dread that clung to the walls of the mansion. There was a heavy silence in the mansion as it was past midnight.
A man labored breathing and whispers broke the silent atmosphere, his rushed footsteps echoed on the tiled floors as it brought more chills and trepidation.
Wills Adams stumbled down the stairs of his mansion as heavy sweat dripped down his forehead. His clothes were soaked wet with sweat and they clung to his body as his eyes darted around like a mad man being haunted. He sighed as he thought to himself.
“I shouldn’t have gone to that devil for help, now I have to live in worry and fear. I have also put my family into this big mess.”
"He is coming," he whispered as he continued walking down the steps of the mansion with unsteady steps, holding the railing for support.
Suddenly, a touch landed on his shoulder.
Wills convulsed vigorously, a strained yelp ripping from his throat. But when he spun around, it was only his wife.
He breathed a sigh of relief as he sat down at the last step of the staircase.
Rose's face etched with worry as she voiced out. “Wills, what is going on? Did something bad happen?”
He didn't answer. He seemed unable to. His breathing labored faster, his hands trembling and clasped together as if saying his last prayer for what to come.
“Wills, what is wrong? You are scaring me.” Rose grabbed him by both shoulders as she shook him lightly to bring him out of his reverie.
He soon regained his senses, stood up and walked to the dining hall. His back hunched as if he had aged over the night. He sunk in the dining chair and looked at his wife.
Rose followed behind him, her steps frail with dread and when she got close to him, he grabbed her hands tightly.
“Ivan Vladimir. He is coming for us.”
Rose froze, her breath caught in her throat and her face reddened in her instant.
"No," her voice quivered, barely recognizable. “Wills…no. He promised us a month, he said…”
Before Rose could finish, soft footsteps resonated and a slender figure emerged from the shadow. Ellen Adams blinked at her parents' plight down below: her parents ridden with fear, her mother’s hand pressed close to her mouth and her father’s figure hunched like a broken man.
She raised her brows in confusion,"what’s going on?" she said in an askance but was answered by the howling of the wind.
She slowly descended the stairs and walked towards her parents. She asked again, her curiosity piqued. “What’s going on?”
Wills and Rose looked at each other, telling one another to tell their daughter the truth through their eyes.
Rose hesitated briefly, glancing at her husband. She sighed then spoke, “We… borrowed money from someone dangerous to save the company.”
Ellen raised her eyebrows and questioned, “What kind of money and from who?”
“A hundred billion. From Ivan Vladimir the CEO of BSC Company.” Wills looked up at his daughter.
“What?! And you didn’t think of informing me?” Ellen’s jaw dropped.
“We didn’t want to bother you and besides, the company was falling apart. The money we borrowed revived the company back.” Rose sighed as she looked at her daughter.
“I would have looked through my contact…”
“No one would lend you such an amount after all you are a college student.” Wills sighed. All this was his fault. If he had managed the company properly, casualties like this wouldn’t have happened.
Ellen hauled back, her anxiety rising but worry overtook it. “So why panic now? Is he coming today?
Wills tightly pulled his hair. “Yes. Today.”
Ellen rolled her eyes, completely ignorant. “Then tell him you haven't gathered enough yet.”
Her parents exchanged a look of belief.
“You don’t know that devil, Ellen.” Rose said quietly. “Ivan Vladimir doesn't forgive debt. He collects them. All of them. One way or another.”
Ellen’s face tightened, she didn't understand their fear but a memory flashed.
“The messages…” She mumbled.
Wills looked up almost immediately. “What messages?”
Ellen paused. “About the company. I got messages from a strange number – telling me the company was facing bankruptcy. I treated it as spam.”
Rose wobbled.
“It kept calling too,” Ellen added. “Threatening me for information.”
She rubbed her arms, suddenly frightened. “Ricardo helped me block the number.”
Will's stomach somersaulted.
Someone had been watching them. Someone close.
“And the news article,” Ellen continued. “Celine showed me at school – about the company almost collapsing. I didn't believe it and laughed it off. I thought you two would have told me if something was wrong.”
Her voice quivered on the last word.
She had ignored every sign. Every warning.
“If the messages and news weren't a coincidence,” she continued, “... then someone was leaking information. Someone inside your company, Dad.”
“A mole…” Will's eyes widened in realization. “I’ll investigate.”
Rose suddenly spruced up. “Ellen, go to your room. Now. Before he arrives.”
“Yes.” Wills urged. “It’s safer upstairs."
Ellen shook her head, her jaw tightening. “I’m not hiding. I’m staying right here. I want to see what this bastard thinks he can do.”
Wills opened his mouth to persuade his daughter.
But then the lights flickered.
The wind howled.
A cold gust swept through the hall, making the mansion a degree colder.
Footsteps echoed.
It was slow, controlled and deadly.
The devil reincarnate had arrived.
Naomi’s breath came in a shallow burst, chest rising and falling like she had run a marathon. Her skin burned, heart pulsating and her mind screamed at her that something was wrong. She pressed her fingers against her temple trying to stabilize herself, but the truth was undeniable. Her voice cracked as she whispered, “Mark…what did you do?”Mark leaned back on his chair with a smile, twisted smile, far too cruel. He looked at the lady struggling for help that kept losing her balance as his eyes gleamed with a twisted triumph. “You drugged me?” Naomi’s voice trembled, but her words carried disbelief. She was a doctor and years of training has made her recognize the interference of different chemicals in her body. The dizziness, the heat that rushed between her legs and the weakness. She knew the signs. She knew them all. She stared at him, her heart breaking, still in denial but her body told her otherwise. She didn't believe it. No, she couldn't believe it. Mark had been her patie
Carrot. The word lingered in her mind like a repeated nudge. Yes, Carrot! Her eyes brightened with stars like she had just found a lost toy. She could use carrots as a natural contraceptive. Papaya too. She wasn't sure where she had found it but the thought had taken roots. Those pills are harmful and consuming them could damage her body, ruin her womb. And besides, it's a vegetable, edible and nutritious.Like a little girl, she dashed into the mansion as her skirt brushed between her legs as it danced with the wind, her faint perfume clinging to the air. “Sarah, Sarah.” She caught her breath as she inhaled and exhaled due to the small run, “Is it possible to plant carrots and papaya in the garden?”Sarah looked up, startled, then nodded her head in affirmation. “Yes miss.” Not sure of what was going on, she hesitated, her eyes flickering with doubt before introducing another maid to her. “This is Tara. She can accompany you.” “Tara, follow Miss to the grocery store to get vegetab
“Lie on the bed.” Ivan commanded once more, his voice low and unbending not wanting her to resist but to obey. It was a command not a request. She laid on the bed with trembling limbs as her heart hammered against her chest. The room dropped a degree colder and tension clung onto the walls of the room as desire filled the air, the night whispering unspoken emotions. She watched as Ivan unbuckled his belt and her heart beat frantically as she tried to escape but his cold blue orbs wouldn't even let her as it pinned her on the bed hence, she sat bed rotten and did not move an inch. “It’s finally over.” Ivan stood in nothing but his briefs and she caught the desire that clouded his eyes. Her breath hitched as she tightened her fingers into fist by her sides. She could see the monster that was begging to be released as it sprang up from its humble abode and very soon the monster was set free as he removed the last bit of clothing. He gripped her legs forcefully and threw a cold word at
The black SUV car screeched down the street, the tires clutching the asphalt floor as if running away from its shadows. Ellen palm clammed against the leather seat as her heart beat wildly against her chest, like a warning drum. Century Center seemed not far anymore and the mansion loomed elegant, massive and untouchable, showing a fortress of Ivan’s tyranny. And very soon, they got to the mansion. The big black gate opened and the car quickly passed through it and arrived at the front of the mansion.Ellen looked at the mansion, still marveled at its aesthetic and beauty. It looked magnificent! And very quickly, Ivan lifted the disheveled girl out of the car, his grip unyielding and strode towards the mansion. But the girl kept twisting and struggling but his hands were ironclad. He couldn't resist lowering his head to kiss her. “Do you think running from me changes anything?” His voice was dangerous, laced with need that made her skin crawl and her heart pound. He kicked the door
Ellen paced around in the manager's office, her heart in turmoil as it beat frantically in her chest. She clasped her hands together, praying for the manger’s safety as she faced the devil. Still praying, she heard a loud bang. It was sharp and violent and immediately, she hurried to the door and placed her ears to the door, eavesdropping. She noticed this sound seems like when things are forcefully destroyed. The sound continued and everywhere suddenly became still. She staggered back and placed her hands on her trembling legs to calm herself but instead, it trembled more. She decided to stand up and walked around the office. Not hearing anything for a while, she breathed a sigh of relief as she thought the storm was over.Immediately, a gun shot rang out followed by a muffled scream and Ellen’s legs wobbled as she forced herself to stand upright. “Is Ivan Vladimir trying to murder me?” She looked at the door as tears streamed down her face.“Ma’am has made so many sacrifices for me
The black SUV car rolled to a stop at the front of a mini restaurant followed by the lines of cars behind the SUV car. A pale finger adorned by a skull ring emerged from the shadow and rolled down the car window. With the car window down, insides of the car can be seen and Ivan’s face was pushed into the limelight.“Wow.” Different gasps were heard as the crowd looked at Ivan’s gorgeous face. “Is he a star? No, he even looks more handsome than some of these male idols and actors.”The ladies lost their senses as soon as they saw Ivan. They pushed their chests out and batted their eyelashes at him.Ivan looked at the ladies clamouring at him and smirked at them. This action of his caused them to shout at the more and scream at him like he was some kind of super star. In an ordinary street, no one knew Ivan’s identity, as the ruthless and business mogul in the United States. Well, he was some kind of celebrity, even his fame was higher than the male idols and his name was well known in
