Sebastian drove straight to his apartment and hurried up to the penthouse on the top floor. He felt restless, almost desperate to see Big Sis Rosie again. He needed to know whether Shania's words had planted a genuine doubt in his mind—or whether his feelings for Rosie were exactly what he'd always believed them to be.

He unlocked the door with his fingerprint and pushed it open.

“Rosie!”

His voice echoed through the now spotless but strangely empty penthouse.

Sebastian checked the time.

For some inexplicable reason, Charles was furious at the thought of Miranda wanting to slap his wife."Did you?""Well, sadly, no..." Miranda lamented, as though she were the one who had been wronged. "She caught my hand and then slapped me repeatedly until I became dizzy and fell to the floor."At last, Miranda lifted her head. Her eyes were glossy with tears."She slapped me so hard I nearly cried, Darling..." she whimpered. "Please avenge me. I want you to beat her. Slap her ten times harder than she slapped me!"Charles rose from his chair and walked towards her.Miranda detected no hostility in his expression, so she remained where she was until he stopped directly in front of her."Tell me, love. Where did she slap you?""My left cheek." Miranda pointed to it pitifully. "She slapped me here. It’s bruised, and I have to cover it with make-up."The sight of a beautiful woman looking so vulnerable would have awakened a protective instinct in most men.Unfortunately for Miranda, Cha

Charles surveyed Miranda from head to toe with his cold, viper-like gaze, and she immediately lowered her head. She was frightened. In four years of their relationship, she had never seen this side of him. Charles had always been sweet to her—generous, attentive and indulgent enough to make her believe she held a special place in his heart. So why had everything changed so suddenly? What did I do wrong? I thought we were going to have a beautiful life together...Miranda struggled to accept the reality that she was no longer Charles’s favourite woman. This is supposed to be Rosie’s position.Rosie is supposed to be the one Charles hates. The one he doesn’t love. Not me.Charles noticed the anger and resentment flickering across Miranda’s face. She looked as though she were still struggling to make sense of everything, constructing one explanation after another in her head.At least, none of that anger appeared to be directed at him. She didn't even dare meet his eyes.To be perfectly

Charles returned home early after finishing his meeting. He was satisfied with the new arrangement he had put in place. Now every businessman who works closely with my family will be suspicious of the others, Charles thought. They'll start hunting for whoever is hiding Rosie and Izzie. And to save their own skins, they won't hesitate to report anyone they discover doing something shady behind my back—just as Colin Maxwell did. They'll start competing for my favour. And that is precisely what I want.Charles had always found it remarkably easy to control those crooked bootlickers. After all, he was the one who had made them so dependent on the Sterling empire that their businesses would crumble the moment he terminated their contracts.Until now, he'd never felt the need to do so.But that had changed."Well, not any more," Charles murmured. "One of them was bold enough to hide my wife and daughter. He's challenging my authority, so everyone can suffer until I discover who he is."Char

Miranda remained sitting on the floor in stunned silence, far too shocked to react. The waitresses who had witnessed the entire scene were equally shaken. None dared approach her after seeing Miranda attack the other woman so viciously.A few had considered calling the police, but the supposedly fragile woman had surprised them all. She had defended herself remarkably well, even managing to slap Miranda hard enough to send her sprawling onto the floor. The waitresses exchanged nervous whispers.Miranda heard them."What are you looking at?" she snapped. The women immediately fell silent and looked away, suddenly finding the tables and coffee machines far more interesting than the spectacle that had unfolded before them.Miranda gritted her teeth. She pushed herself to her feet, dusted off the back of her trousers and stormed out of the diner. She stomped all the way back to her flat, which was only a short distance away.It had been a month since she’d moved into the cheaper place. Ch

Rosie drove aimlessly through the city, fighting back the tears that had slipped down her cheeks after Desiree’s relentless questioning. She wanted to return to the apartment and hide.Even the thought of Charles was enough to send a fresh wave of anxiety through her. What if he found her? What if he dragged her back to that dreadful mansion, where she’d spent years being treated like a punching bag—something he could insult, belittle and laugh at whenever he pleased?Rosie shuddered. She drove straight past the apartment. She couldn’t bear the thought of being reminded of the Sterling family right now. Not when her emotions were already so raw.So she kept driving.Eventually, she spotted a familiar diner she hadn’t visited in years. She remembered coming here before she married Charles. It was cheap, unpretentious and hardly glamorous, but back then, that had been more than enough. Rosie had never had much money to spare. With nowhere else to go, she pulled into a parking space and

Colin Maxwell could think of no reason. In fact, what he had said was perfectly true. If he took the contract back to his office and showed it to his shareholders, they would probably be the ones pressuring him to sign it immediately. What made him hesitate was instinct. He was being driven entirely by a fear of the unknown—a nagging suspicion that Sebastian had some hidden agenda and that signing the agreement would somehow lead to his downfall.Sebastian seemed to realise there was little point in pressuring the old man any further. Instead, he dropped the bomb.“Well, Mr Maxwell, if you’re not interested in our cooperation, then I’d like you to hand that contract back to me.”“But I’m planning to take it to my office, Mr Edward Sterling.”“There’s no need. I don’t have time to wait for your confirmation.” Sebastian leaned back slightly, his expression calm. “You see, I have no real incentive to accept you as my supplier in the first place, Mr Maxwell. I agreed because of the sentim

Rosie sat at the dining table, the candlelight flickering softly against untouched plates. The roasted chicken—Isabella’s favourite—had long since gone cold. She glanced at the clock.Nine o’clock.Charles Sterling was not home.He had promised. He had promised their daughter he would return before

Rosie reacted at once, catching hold of her daughter’s arm and gently but firmly pulling her aside.“I’m so sorry, Sebastian,” she said quickly. “P–Please don’t be upset with Izzie. She’s only a child, I—”“Tch. It’s fine,” he cut in, dismissive. “Just make me the same smoothie. And from now on, yo
