Serena couldn't breathe.

She stared at the message on her phone, reading every word again and again, hoping that somehow the letters would rearrange themselves into something less terrifying.

Your father didn't die in an accident.

For fifteen years, she had believed that her father had died when his car plunged off a mountain road during a business trip. Her mother had told her that the police found the wreckage the following morning and that there had been nothing anyone could do.

Serena had been nine years old.

She still remembered standing beside her mother's bed that night, asking when Daddy would come home.

Her mother had cried for hours before finally holding Serena against her chest and whispering, "He's not coming back, sweetheart."

Now, a stranger was telling her that everything she had believed might be a lie.

And somehow, Alexander Sterling was connected to it.

"Serena."

Alexander's voice pulled her from her thoughts.

She looked up.

He stood a few feet away, his expression unreadable, but his eyes had changed. The man who had teased her moments earlier was gone. In his place stood the ruthless billionaire whose name could silence an entire boardroom.

"Let me see the message," he said.

She tightened her grip on the phone.

"Why?"

"Because I recognize the number."

Her heart began pounding harder.

"Who does it belong to?"

Alexander didn't answer immediately.

That frightened her more than anything else.

"Tell me!" she demanded.

He looked toward the windows, his jaw tightening.

"I need to make a call."

Serena laughed bitterly.

"Of course. Another secret. Another man who thinks he can decide what I deserve to know."

"That's not what I'm doing."

"Then what are you doing, Alexander? Protecting me? From what? From the truth about my own father?"

He turned toward her.

For a moment, something resembling guilt crossed his face.

Then it disappeared.

"Your father was connected to my family."

The room went silent.

Serena felt as though the floor had vanished beneath her feet.

"What did you say?"

"Your father worked with my father years ago."

She shook her head.

"No. That's impossible."

"I never said I knew him personally."

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I didn't know who you were when we first met."

Serena searched his face, desperate to find a reason to believe him.

"Did your father have something to do with his death?"

Alexander's silence lasted only a few seconds.

But to Serena, it felt endless.

"I don't know," he finally admitted.

She stepped backward.

"You don't know, or you don't want to tell me?"

"Serena—"

"Don't."

Her voice broke.

"You paid for my mother's treatment. You stayed with me when I was frightened. You made me believe that, for once, someone was helping me without wanting anything in return."

Alexander moved toward her.

She raised a hand.

"Don't come any closer."

He stopped.

"I would never deliberately hurt you."

"But you might be hiding something that could destroy my family."

He had no answer.

And that was enough.

Serena grabbed her bag and hurried toward the bedroom to collect her things.

"Where are you going?" Alexander called.

"Back to the hospital."

"You can't leave like this."

She turned at the doorway.

"Watch me."

Then she walked out, leaving the billionaire standing alone in his own home.

For the first time in years, Alexander Sterling had no idea how to stop someone from walking away.

And the worst part was that he knew he deserved it.

---

The Name on the Screen

Alexander waited until the elevator doors closed before taking out his phone.

He dialed a number he hadn't called in almost three years.

The call connected on the fourth ring.

"What do you want, Sterling?"

The familiar voice made Alexander's stomach tighten.

"Where are you?"

A short laugh came from the other end.

"That's an interesting way to greet an old friend."

"I asked you a question, Damian."

"Still as charming as ever."

Alexander walked into his study and locked the door.

"I received a message from your old number."

Silence.

Then Damian Cross spoke again, his voice suddenly serious.

"What kind of message?"

"One involving Serena Alvarado."

The silence that followed was different.

Heavier.

Alexander's fingers tightened around the phone.

"You know that name."

It wasn't a question.

Damian exhaled slowly.

"Where is she?"

"Why?"

"Alexander, listen to me carefully. Do not let her anywhere near the Sterling archives."

Alexander frowned.

"What the hell are you talking about?"

"I can't explain over the phone."

"You have thirty seconds."

"Her father wasn't supposed to die that night."

Alexander went completely still.

Outside the study, the city continued waking up. Cars moved along the streets, office lights flickered on, and ordinary people prepared for another day.

But inside the room, the past had just come back to life.

"What did you say?" Alexander whispered.

Damian's voice dropped.

"Your father ordered the investigation closed. The official report was altered. And someone has been searching for the original documents ever since."

Alexander's mind raced.

His father had died ten years ago, leaving behind a business empire and a legacy Alexander had spent years trying to understand.

He had always believed his father's final years were marked by business rivalries and financial disputes.

Now he wasn't so sure.

"Why didn't you tell me this before?"

"Because I thought the evidence had been destroyed."

"And now?"

"Now someone knows Serena is connected to it."

Alexander closed his eyes.

He thought of Serena's frightened face and the way she had looked at him as though he were a stranger all over again.

"Who sent the message?"

"I don't know."

"You're lying."

"Maybe. But right now, that doesn't matter."

Damian's voice became urgent.

"Find Serena. Make sure she's safe. And whatever you do, don't trust anyone who claims to have answers about her father."

The call ended.

Alexander stared at his phone.

Then he opened his contacts and called his head of security.

"Find Serena Alvarado. I want someone with her at all times, but don't let her know you're following her."

"Yes, sir."

"And Daniel?"

"Yes?"

"Find out everything about her father's death. Every police report, every witness statement, every missing document."

"Understood."

Alexander ended the call.

Then he looked at the photograph on his desk.

It showed him at twenty-two, standing beside his father and Damian at a company event.

His father had one hand on Alexander's shoulder.

Damian was smiling.

All three men looked as though the future belonged to them.

Alexander turned the photograph over.

Written on the back in his father's handwriting were five words.

Some debts must remain buried.

For the first time, he wondered whether his father had left him an empire built on a lie.

---

A Daughter's Fear

Serena reached the hospital forty minutes later.

She rushed toward the intensive care unit, barely noticing the nurses who greeted her.

Her mother's room was quiet.

Machines beeped softly beside the bed, and pale morning light filtered through the curtains.

"Mom?"

Her mother opened her eyes.

For a moment, she looked confused. Then recognition spread across her tired face.

"Serena."

Serena rushed to her bedside and carefully took her hand.

"I'm here, Mom. I'm here."

Her mother tried to sit up, but Serena gently stopped her.

"Don't move. The doctor said you need to rest."

Her mother's gaze shifted toward the doorway.

"Are you alone?"

Serena hesitated.

"Yes."

It was a lie.

Alexander's driver was waiting downstairs, and Serena had already noticed the unfamiliar man standing near the elevators.

She suspected Alexander had arranged for someone to watch over her.

She didn't know whether to feel grateful or furious.

Her mother squeezed her fingers.

"Did he tell you?"

Serena's chest tightened.

"Tell me what?"

"The truth."

Tears filled Serena's eyes.

"Mom, what happened to Dad?"

Her mother's face crumpled.

For fifteen years, she had carried the secret alone. Now, lying in a hospital bed with her strength fading, she seemed unable to keep pretending.

"Your father was a good man," she whispered. "He loved you more than anything in the world."

"Then why did someone say he didn't die in an accident?"

Her mother closed her eyes.

Serena felt panic rise in her throat.

"Mom, please. I need to know."

Her mother opened her eyes again.

"Your father worked for Richard Sterling."

Alexander's father.

Serena swallowed.

"What did he do for him?"

"He was the company's chief financial auditor. He discovered that millions of pesos were disappearing from accounts connected to several of Richard's business partners."

"Someone was stealing money?"

Her mother nodded weakly.

"Your father gathered evidence. He planned to report everything to the authorities, but before he could, he received a warning."

Serena could barely hear herself breathe.

"From whom?"

"I don't know. He never told me the name."

"Then what happened?"

Her mother's eyes filled with tears.

"That night, your father called me. He said he had made a terrible mistake by trusting someone close to him. He told me that if anything happened to him, I had to protect you and Ethan."

Serena gripped her mother's hand.

"Why didn't you tell the police?"

"I tried."

Her mother began to cry.

"The next morning, two men came to our house. They knew where you went to school. They knew Ethan's name. They told me that if I continued asking questions, my children would suffer the same fate as their father."

Serena covered her mouth.

For years, her mother had carried the burden of protecting them without ever revealing why.

"Why didn't you tell me when I grew up?"

"Because I thought the danger had passed."

Her mother looked toward the window.

"Then, three months ago, someone came looking for your father again."

Serena froze.

"Three months ago?"

Her mother nodded.

"He asked about the documents your father had hidden. I told him I knew nothing. He didn't believe me."

"Who was he?"

"I never saw his face clearly."

Her mother began coughing, and Serena immediately called for a nurse.

As the nurse checked her mother's vital signs, Serena stepped away from the bed, struggling to process everything she had just learned.

Her father hadn't simply died.

He had been silenced.

And someone had returned after all these years to finish whatever had been started.

When the nurse finally allowed her to return, Serena sat beside her mother.

"Did Dad leave anything behind? Anything at all?"

Her mother hesitated.

Then she reached beneath her pillow and pulled out a small silver key attached to a faded ribbon.

"I kept this hidden for fifteen years."

Serena stared at it.

"What does it open?"

Her mother's fingers trembled as she placed the key in Serena's palm.

"Your father told me never to give it to anyone from the Sterling family."

Serena's blood ran cold.

"Mom, why?"

Her mother looked directly into her eyes.

"Because the man who killed your father was someone your father trusted with his life."

---

The Woman in the Hallway

Serena left the hospital room shortly after her mother fell asleep.

She needed air.

She needed time to think.

Most of all, she needed to decide whether Alexander Sterling was a man she could trust.

She walked toward the vending machines at the end of the corridor, clutching the silver key inside her fist.

A woman's voice interrupted her thoughts.

"Miss Alvarado?"

Serena turned.

A woman in a beige coat stood several feet away. She looked to be in her late forties, with carefully styled hair and a handbag that appeared far too expensive for an ordinary hospital visitor.

"Yes?"

"My name is Evelyn Shaw. I used to work for Richard Sterling."

Serena's heartbeat quickened.

"Alexander's father?"

The woman nodded.

"I heard your mother was admitted here. I thought you deserved to know something about your father."

Serena stared at her.

"How do you know my mother?"

"I knew your father."

"Then tell me what happened to him."

Evelyn glanced down the corridor.

"Not here."

Serena tightened her grip on the key.

"Why should I trust you?"

"You shouldn't."

The answer surprised her.

Evelyn stepped closer.

"But you should listen to me before it's too late."

She reached into her handbag and removed a folded photograph.

Serena unfolded it.

The image showed three men standing outside a large building. One was her father, younger but unmistakable. Another was Richard Sterling.

The third man stood between them, his face partially hidden by the shadow of a tree.

On the back of the photograph was a handwritten date.

The night her father died.

Serena's fingers began to tremble.

"Who is the third man?"

Evelyn looked directly at her.

"That's what your father died trying to prove."

"Who is he?"

Before Evelyn could answer, Serena heard footsteps approaching.

The woman immediately stepped away.

"Whatever you do, don't tell Alexander about the key."

Serena's eyes widened.

"How do you know I have a key?"

Evelyn's face changed.

For the first time, genuine fear appeared in her eyes.

"Because someone has been watching you since the moment you were born."

A man's voice suddenly called from behind Serena.

"Miss Alvarado?"

She turned.

A security guard was walking toward them.

When Serena looked back, Evelyn was gone.

Only the photograph remained in her hand.

She stared at it, then turned it over again.

Beneath the date, someone had written a sentence in small, precise letters.

If you want to know who killed your father, ask Alexander Sterling what happened at eleven forty-seven that night.

Serena felt the blood drain from her face.

Because eleven forty-seven was the exact time recorded on her father's death certificate.

And Alexander Sterling had just become the one man she needed to question.

“Tell me you didn't do it.” Serena's voice was barely audible. Alexander stood in the middle of Damian's apartment, his phone still pressed against his ear. The call with the hospital had ended, but the nurse's words continued to echo in his mind. Someone had taken Serena's mother using his personal security credentials. Someone had entered a hospital room, bypassed security, and disappeared with a woman who knew the truth about a murder committed ten years ago. And Serena was looking at him as if he were the enemy. “Serena,” he said carefully, “I had nothing to do with your mother's disappearance.” “Then how did they use your credentials?” “I don't know.” “You always say that.” Her eyes filled with tears, but her voice grew stronger. “You didn't know what happened to my father. You didn't know why your mother disappeared. You didn't know why someone was threatening us. And now my mother is missing, and the people responsible have access to your security system.”

The gun was pointed directly at Serena's chest. For a moment, she couldn't breathe. The stranger stood at the entrance of the underground vault, his gray eyes fixed on her with a disturbing mixture of recognition and resentment. Rainwater dripped from his coat onto the stone floor. He looked like a man who had spent ten years hiding from the world—and had finally decided to stop running. Alexander stepped in front of Serena. “Lower the gun.” The stranger laughed. “You still give orders as if your father's money makes you untouchable.” “Who are you?” “You already know who I am.” “No,” Alexander answered coldly. “I know what you look like. I want to know why you're here.” The man tilted his head. “Still your father's son. Always demanding answers, never willing to ask the right questions.” Alexander's jaw tightened. “I won't ask again.” “And what will you do if I refuse? Shoot me?” The stranger raised his eyebrows. “Go ahead. You have your father's temper, but you never ha
