Some nights begin with a mistake. Others begin with a desire neither heart can deny.

The Hospital Corridor

Serena had no idea how long she had been crying.

All she knew was that Alexander Sterling's arms were around her, his expensive suit was damp from her tears, and for the first time that evening, she could finally breathe.

She pulled away abruptly, embarrassed by her behavior.

"I'm sorry," she whispered, wiping her cheeks. "I shouldn't have done that."

Alexander glanced at the front of his suit before looking at her again.

"Done what?"

"Cried all over you."

"I've survived worse things than a little water, Miss Alvarado."

Despite herself, Serena let out a small laugh.

It was the first time she had laughed since receiving the hospital's message.

Alexander studied her face. Her eyes were swollen, her cheeks flushed, and several strands of hair had escaped the loose hairstyle she had carefully arranged earlier that evening.

She looked exhausted.

And yet, something about her made him reluctant to look away.

"Have you eaten?" he asked.

Serena shook her head.

"Then I'll have someone bring you something."

"You don't have to do that."

"I know."

"Then why do you keep doing things for me?"

Alexander paused.

It was a reasonable question, but he had no reasonable answer.

He could have told her that he disliked watching people suffer when he had the power to help. He could have explained that he understood the desperation of watching a loved one deteriorate.

Instead, he said, "Perhaps I don't like seeing you cry."

Serena's heart stumbled.

For a moment, she forgot that this man was a billionaire who could buy entire buildings without checking the price.

She saw the person beneath the reputation.

Then the doctor approached them.

"Mr. Sterling, the initial payment has been arranged. We can proceed with the necessary treatment, but we'll need a family member to sign the remaining consent forms."

Serena immediately stood.

"That's me. Please, tell me where to sign."

The doctor handed her the paperwork.

Her hands trembled as she read through it.

Alexander stood beside her without interrupting.

When she finished, she looked up at him.

"I'll pay you back."

He slipped his hands into his pockets.

"We can discuss that later."

"No. I mean it. Every peso."

"All right."

She blinked, surprised that he had agreed so easily.

"But I have one condition," he added.

There it was.

Serena's shoulders stiffened.

"What condition?"

"You stop apologizing for needing help."

She stared at him.

Then, without warning, tears filled her eyes again.

Alexander sighed.

"You're doing it again."

She laughed through her tears.

And he realized, with a strange ache in his chest, that he wanted to hear that sound again.

Perhaps far more often than was wise.

An Unexpected Invitation

At two in the morning, Serena's mother was taken into surgery.

The waiting room became unbearable.

Every time a nurse passed the door, Serena looked up hopefully. Every time the telephone rang, her heart jumped.

Alexander remained beside her.

He took several business calls, speaking in a low voice as he dealt with a crisis involving one of his companies. Even while listening to financial reports, however, his attention kept returning to Serena.

Eventually, Daniel, his executive assistant, arrived carrying a folder.

"Sir, the board meeting has been moved to eight."

"Cancel it."

Daniel stared at him.

"All of it?"

"Did I stutter?"

"No, sir."

Daniel glanced at Serena, then back at his employer.

Something resembling surprise crossed his face.

Alexander Sterling had once attended a meeting from a hospital waiting room while his own father lay critically ill. He had left only when the doctors confirmed there was nothing more to be done.

Yet here he was, sacrificing an entire morning for a woman he had met only hours earlier.

Daniel wisely kept his thoughts to himself.

After he left, Serena turned toward Alexander.

"You should go home."

"No."

"You have work."

"It will still be there tomorrow."

"But—"

"Serena."

She stopped.

He leaned forward, his forearms resting on his knees.

"Your mother is in surgery. You're frightened, exhausted, and probably haven't slept properly in days. Let me worry about the meetings."

She looked down at her hands.

"No one's ever done this for me before."

The confession escaped before she could stop it.

Alexander's expression changed.

"Then the people around you have failed you."

She shook her head.

"They haven't. My mother raised me alone after my father died. She worked until her hands were covered in calluses so Ethan and I could go to school. I just wish I could do more for her."

"You are doing more."

"How do you know?"

"Because you're here."

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Then Alexander stood and offered his hand.

"Come with me."

Serena looked at it suspiciously.

"Where?"

"My penthouse."

She immediately withdrew.

"Absolutely not."

His eyebrows rose.

"I haven't even explained."

"You don't need to. I'm not going to your penthouse at two in the morning with a man I barely know."

"Fair point."

She blinked.

She hadn't expected him to agree.

Alexander retrieved his coat.

"I'll take you home, then."

Serena glanced toward the operating room.

"What if the doctor needs me?"

"My driver will remain here. The hospital has my number, and I'll bring you back the moment they call."

She hesitated.

Alexander extended his hand again, this time without insisting.

"Your choice."

Serena studied him.

Perhaps it was the exhaustion. Perhaps it was the way he had stayed beside her without demanding anything in return.

Or perhaps she was simply tired of fighting every battle alone.

She placed her hand in his.

"Just until the doctor calls."

Alexander closed his fingers around hers.

"Of course."

Neither of them knew that the decision would change everything.

The Man Behind the Glass

Alexander's penthouse occupied the top floor of a skyscraper overlooking the city.

When Serena stepped inside, she stopped in the entrance.

Floor-to-ceiling windows revealed a breathtaking view of glittering buildings and rain-soaked streets. The interior was decorated in shades of black, gray, and gold, with expensive furniture arranged in perfect symmetry.

It was beautiful.

It was also strangely empty.

"This is where you live?" she asked.

"Yes."

"Do you ever get lost?"

He glanced at her.

"Why would I get lost in my own home?"

"Because it's bigger than my entire neighborhood."

A quiet laugh escaped him.

Serena looked at him in surprise.

"You laugh."

"Occasionally."

"I was beginning to think you were born angry."

"Careful, Miss Alvarado. I could still send you back into the rain."

She smiled.

For a few minutes, they felt like ordinary people teasing each other rather than two strangers whose lives had collided in a hospital corridor.

Alexander showed her to a guest bedroom and instructed his housekeeper to prepare something warm to eat.

Serena sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the pristine white sheets.

She had never slept anywhere so luxurious.

Yet she couldn't stop thinking about her mother.

When Alexander returned with a tray of food, he found her standing beside the window.

"You're supposed to be resting."

"I can't."

He set the tray down.

"She's in the best hands available."

"You don't know that."

"Actually, I do. I know the hospital's chief surgeon personally."

Serena turned sharply.

"Of course you do."

He folded his arms.

"Was that sarcasm?"

"Maybe."

He shook his head, amused.

Then he grew serious.

"Serena, I want you to understand something. I didn't pay for your mother's treatment because I expect something from you."

She looked at him carefully.

"Then why?"

He stepped closer.

"Because I wanted to."

"That's not how the world works."

"Perhaps not your world."

The words hurt more than he intended.

Serena looked away.

"You think money makes everything simple."

"No. I think money makes certain things possible."

"And what about the things it can't buy?"

Alexander's gaze lingered on her face.

"Those are the things that keep me awake at night."

For the first time, Serena understood that his wealth had not protected him from everything.

He simply had enough money to hide his wounds behind expensive walls.

The Kiss Neither Expected

By four in the morning, the rain had stopped.

Serena had eaten a little and changed into a comfortable shirt borrowed from the housekeeper. She was preparing to return to the guest bedroom when she noticed a light coming from the study.

Alexander stood near the window, his phone pressed against his ear.

"No," he said sharply. "I don't care what the board wants. The acquisition is finished."

He listened for a moment.

"Then find someone else to threaten. I'm not interested."

He ended the call and tossed the phone onto his desk.

Serena hesitated at the doorway.

"Bad news?"

He turned.

"Business."

"That sounds like bad news."

"It usually is."

She stepped inside.

"You should sleep."

"So should you."

"I'm trying."

He studied her for a moment.

Then he asked, "Why did you walk away from me at the hotel?"

Serena froze.

"What?"

"You refused my help. You refused to tell me your name. You walked away as though I were someone you needed to escape."

"Because I didn't know you."

"And now?"

She looked at him.

Now, she knew that he could be arrogant, cold, and infuriating.

She also knew that he had paid for her mother's treatment without asking for anything in return.

"I still don't know you," she admitted.

Alexander nodded slowly.

"Then let me give you a reason to."

He approached, stopping just in front of her.

"Tell me to leave, Serena, and I will."

Her heartbeat quickened.

He wasn't touching her. He wasn't blocking the doorway.

For once, the decision was entirely hers.

She lifted her eyes to his.

"Why do you keep looking at me like that?"

"Like what?"

"Like you want to say something but don't know how."

A faint smile touched his mouth.

"Perhaps I don't."

"You're a billionaire. Surely you can afford a few words."

He laughed softly.

Then his expression changed.

"Can I kiss you?"

The question surprised her more than any demand could have.

Serena looked at his lips, then back into his eyes.

"Yes," she whispered.

Alexander leaned down slowly, giving her time to change her mind.

She didn't.

Their lips met.

The kiss began gently, almost cautiously, as though both were afraid of breaking something fragile. Serena placed a hand against his chest, feeling the steady beat beneath his shirt.

Alexander drew back just enough to look at her.

"Are you sure?"

She nodded.

This time, she kissed him.

The restraint between them dissolved into a deeper, more passionate embrace. He wrapped his arms around her waist, and she curled her fingers into his shirt, no longer pretending that she felt nothing for him.

When they finally separated, Serena's cheeks were flushed.

"This is a terrible idea," she whispered.

"Probably."

"You don't even know what you want from me."

Alexander brushed a loose strand of hair away from her face.

"That's the first honest thing I've admitted to myself in years."

She should have ended the moment there.

Instead, she remained in his arms.

Outside, the city began to brighten with the first traces of dawn.

Inside, two lonely people stood on the edge of a decision neither could take back.

Then Serena's phone rang.

She pulled away immediately and answered.

"Hello?"

A nurse's voice came through the speaker.

"Miss Alvarado, your mother's surgery is over."

Serena held her breath.

"Is she alive?"

"Yes. The procedure went well, but there's something you need to know."

Serena's fingers tightened around the phone.

"What is it?"

The nurse hesitated.

"Your mother regained consciousness briefly. She asked us to contact you because she wanted to tell you something important."

Serena swallowed.

"What did she say?"

The answer made her blood run cold.

"She said that if you were with Alexander Sterling, you must leave him immediately."

Serena slowly lowered the phone.

Alexander's expression changed.

"What did she say?"

Serena stared at him, unable to speak.

Then her phone vibrated again.

An unknown number.

A message appeared on the screen.

Stay away from Alexander Sterling. Your father didn't die in an accident. And if you want your mother to survive the next twenty-four hours, you will do exactly as you're told.

Serena felt the room tilt beneath her feet.

Her father had been dead for fifteen years.

And until that moment, she'd believed the story her mother had told her.

Alexander reached for the phone.

But Serena pulled it away.

For the first time since meeting him, she looked at the billionaire with genuine fear.

"Who are you really, Alexander?"

He stared at the message.

The color drained from his face.

Because he recognized the number.

It belonged to someone who had supposedly been dead for ten years.

“Tell me you didn't do it.” Serena's voice was barely audible. Alexander stood in the middle of Damian's apartment, his phone still pressed against his ear. The call with the hospital had ended, but the nurse's words continued to echo in his mind. Someone had taken Serena's mother using his personal security credentials. Someone had entered a hospital room, bypassed security, and disappeared with a woman who knew the truth about a murder committed ten years ago. And Serena was looking at him as if he were the enemy. “Serena,” he said carefully, “I had nothing to do with your mother's disappearance.” “Then how did they use your credentials?” “I don't know.” “You always say that.” Her eyes filled with tears, but her voice grew stronger. “You didn't know what happened to my father. You didn't know why your mother disappeared. You didn't know why someone was threatening us. And now my mother is missing, and the people responsible have access to your security system.”

The gun was pointed directly at Serena's chest. For a moment, she couldn't breathe. The stranger stood at the entrance of the underground vault, his gray eyes fixed on her with a disturbing mixture of recognition and resentment. Rainwater dripped from his coat onto the stone floor. He looked like a man who had spent ten years hiding from the world—and had finally decided to stop running. Alexander stepped in front of Serena. “Lower the gun.” The stranger laughed. “You still give orders as if your father's money makes you untouchable.” “Who are you?” “You already know who I am.” “No,” Alexander answered coldly. “I know what you look like. I want to know why you're here.” The man tilted his head. “Still your father's son. Always demanding answers, never willing to ask the right questions.” Alexander's jaw tightened. “I won't ask again.” “And what will you do if I refuse? Shoot me?” The stranger raised his eyebrows. “Go ahead. You have your father's temper, but you never ha
