Avery’s POV

The memory of the attack still clung to me like a bad dream. I’d spent the night at Desmond’s, barely sleeping, every creak of the floorboards making me jump. He’d made me some weak tea and just let me talk, absorbing all my fear and confusion.

He came into the living room, where I was curled up on his old armchair, still shaken. He held his laptop, and his face was serious.

“Avery,” he said, his voice quiet. “I was doing some more digging last night after… after what happened. You know how me and researching are like butter and bread.” He set the laptop on the coffee table in front of me, turning the screen so I could see it.

It was an old photo. Faded, a bit blurry, like pictures from years ago. In the middle, standing with a group of young men, was Hector. He looked much younger, grinning widely. But it wasn’t Hector who grabbed my attention.

My eyes landed on the man standing next to him. He was built bigger than Hector, with broad shoulders. His face was a bit hard t

Caspian’s POV Hector actually walked into my office one afternoon. Just walked in. Usually, he stayed far away, only talking to me if he absolutely had to. So when my assistant told me he was waiting, I was genuinely surprised. He came in looking… almost normal. Not the scared mouse he'd been since I took over. He even tried a weak smile.“Mr. Sterling,” he started, his voice a little shaky. “Just wanted to… have a quick chat.”I raised an eyebrow, leaning back in my chair. My gaze stayed steady on him. “About what, Hector?”He shifted his weight, glancing around my office, his old office, like it was brand new. “Just… about the company. And… well, about Avery.”My jaw tightened. Avery. He dared to bring her up? I kept my voice flat, professional. “Avery?”He nodded, finally meeting my eyes, though his were still darting around. “Yeah. She seems to be doing well in her new role. You seem to trust her judgment.”“She’s proving to be valuable,” I said, keeping my voice cool. But inside

Avery’s POVMy phone buzzed on the kitchen counter while I was making pancakes the next morning, the caller ID flashing Jasmine’s name. A knot of dread tightened in my stomach. Part of me wanted to ignore the call, to pretend I hadn’t seen it. But another, angrier part of me wanted to know what she could possibly have to say.I swiped to answer, holding the phone to my ear. “What?” I said, my voice colder than I intended.“Avery,” Jasmine’s voice was surprisingly calm, almost… reasonable? That immediately put me on guard. “We need to talk.”“Talk? About what, Jasmine?” I asked, my voice laced with sarcasm. “About how you slept with my husband? About how you helped destroy my marriage and my life?”There was a pause on the other end. “That’s exactly what I want to talk about.”I scoffed. “I don’t see what there is to talk about. You did what you did.”“Please, Avery,” she said, her voice softening, and that made me even more suspicious. Jasmine never pleaded. “Just… just meet me. For a

Caspian’s POVThe ink on the acquisition papers was barely dry before the changes started. Woods’ Enterprise was mine now, Sterling Enterprises’ newest holding. Stepping into what used to be Hector’s corner office, I took a slow breath. His cheap cologne still faintly lingered. Time to air this place out, literally and figuratively. The first few days were a whirlwind of directives. Streamline this, cut that, show me the numbers. People scrambled. Juliet, though, stood her ground, her face permanently etched in disapproval.“This is insane, Mr. Sterling!” she’d snap, her voice tight as a piano wire. She’d follow me down the hallway, her heels clicking angrily on the marble. “We’ve built this company over decades! You can’t just waltz in here with your fancy ideas and trash everything!”“I can do whatever the heck I feel like doing, this enterprise is mine now.”“The fact that it is yours doesn't mean you shouldn't listen to the previous owners! I know what I'm talking about! This stra

Avery’s POV The next meeting was in the company’s boring conference room. The big table felt like we were about to argue, with Juliet sitting stiffly at one end, Hector looking nervous beside her, and Caspian cool as a cucumber at the other end. I was next to Hector, feeling like I was just watching a weird play.Caspian had been asking all sorts of business questions, mostly to Juliet about money stuff and to Hector about how things worked day-to-day. But then he looked right at me.“Avery,” he said, his voice smooth but with that little something extra that always made me pay attention. “You’ve been quiet. I was wondering what you think about how the people who work here feel? What’s the vibe in different parts of the company?”Juliet’s head snapped towards me, her eyes sharp. “Avery? What would she know? She’s not really involved in the work.”Hector looked surprised too, a little worried as he looked at Caspian then at me. “Yeah, you haven’t been around the office much, Ave. You

  • Tangled Hearts: In Love With My Ex Husband's Boss   8. The Unexpected

Caspian's POV Avery. Her name kept replaying in my head, a soft whisper against the sharper edges of my thoughts. That kiss in the club… it had been unexpected, a sudden spark in the chaotic noise. One minute I was just observing the crowd, the next her lips were on mine, a surprising warmth in the cool indifference I usually carried.Even now, the memory of it was vivid. The slight tremble in her hands when I’d steadied her, the lost look in her emerald green eyes, the way she’d clung to me during the kiss. It was more than just a drunken hook-up. There was a raw vulnerability about her, a pain that seemed to radiate from her like a silent cry.The coincidence of meeting her there, of all places, and then walking into that meeting the next day to find her as Hector’s wife… it was almost too bizarre to be real. The world felt suddenly smaller, the threads of fate tangling in ways I hadn’t anticipated. What was a married woman doing in a club like that, anyway? Not just any married wo

The days after Caspian showed up were weird. I kept thinking about him. He was going to help the family business, but he was also the guy I kissed at the club. It didn't make any sense. And the way he looked at Hector sometimes… it was like there was something else going on.Juliet was bossy as ever. She kept telling Hector and me that we had to act like a happy couple. It felt fake and gross. Hector seemed jumpy. He was always on his phone, whispering. He was probably trying to settle scores with Jessica. Or maybe they have progressed with their secret affairs somewhere else.Me? I was just a mess of feelings. Mad at Hector, annoyed at Juliet, and… well, there was still this strange pull towards Caspian. That kiss at the club kept popping into my head. At that instance, I decided that I needed to get out of the house. The air inside felt heavy so I went to the grocery store, hoping a little fresh air would clear my head. But as I parked my car, I heard this voice that made my stomach

The silence that descended upon the living room after they left was thick and heavy. Juliet stared at the closed door, a triumphant smile playing on her lips. “Well,” she said, her voice brimming with excitement. “That went wonderfully! Mr. Sterling is clearly a very astute businessman. This could be the start of a fantastic new chapter for our family.”Hector, however, remained pale and silent, his gaze fixed on the door through which Caspian had just exited. His hands were clenched into fists, and a muscle twitched in his jaw.“Hector?” Juliet said, her brow furrowing with concern. “Are you alright? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”He didn’t answer, his eyes still locked on the door. I saw him turn to continue glaring at me, but my mind wasn't over the shock of Caspian being the investor. It was settling over me like a cold shroud. The intense stranger from the club, the man whose brief kiss had offered a fleeting escape from my despair, was now standing in our living room, holdi

The shrill voice belonged to Juliet Woods, Hector’s mother. She stood in the doorway, her short, rounded figure radiating disapproval. Her intense blue eyes, the same shade as Hector’s but colder, sharper, darted between us, taking in our flushed faces and the charged atmosphere of the room. Her aging gray hair was perfectly coiffed, and her expensive silk robe spoke of a woman who always expected order and obedience.“Mother,” Hector said, his tone immediately shifting, becoming more subdued. “We were just… having a discussion.”“A discussion that sounds more like a battlefield,” she snapped, her gaze still fixed on me. “Avery, what have you done now to upset my son?”My jaw dropped. She hadn’t even asked what was wrong, she had immediately assumed it was my fault. It was always my fault in her eye, even when I'm sure she could still see the red patches on my cheeks from Hector’s slap.“Actually, Mrs. Woods,” I began, my voice trembling slightly but with a newfound resolve, “your son
