Chapter 2

Author: Amber Fleck
The warm, happy scene inside made it feel less like I was coming home and more like Mia and I had accidentally walked into someone else’s house.

“Claire...”

Ethan shot to his feet and hurried over, reaching for my bag the moment I stepped through the door.

“Vanessa’s landlord suddenly sold the place and kicked them out.

“They haven’t found anywhere to stay yet, so I was hoping... maybe they could stay here for a while?”

I didn’t answer.

I just stood there and watched the house staff carry our things, one by one, into the storage room.

Vanessa spoke up softly, though the smugness on her face was impossible to miss.

“I’m sorry, Claire, but my health hasn’t been great. I really need a room with good light and fresh air, so Ethan gave me the master bedroom.”

Hugo had taken over Mia’s room too.

Mia’s favorite doll had been tossed outside the door. Its arms and legs were snapped off.

For the first time, Ethan actually looked a bit guilty.

“Claire, if you don’t agree, I can always find them another—”

“I agree.”

I held out my hand to him.

“The rental rate stays the same as before. But if they’re staying in my house, then there’s an occupancy fee. And your companionship surcharge will be billed separately.”

A loud smack cut through the room.

Ethan slammed my handbag to the floor, his face dark as a storm cloud.

“Claire Bennett, have you lost your mind?

“What kind of insane thing are you saying in front of the kids? Have you really lost all sense of decency?”

I almost laughed.

He was the one who had brought another woman and her child into our home, and somehow I was the shameless one for saying it out loud.

Ethan grabbed Vanessa and Hugo and started for the door.

As he passed me, he flung a bank card at my face.

“Eight hundred thousand dollars. Is that enough?

“You’re unbelievable. If money matters that much to you, then go marry your bank account.”

Once the house finally went quiet, Mia sniffled and used a tissue to dab at my face.

That was when I realized the edge of the card had cut the skin near my eye.

“Mommy, it’s all my fault. If I wasn’t sick, Daddy wouldn’t keep making you sad.”

I pulled her into my arms and held her tight.

“I’m not sad,” I whispered. “Once Mia has her surgery, everything’s going to get better. Mommy’s happy.”

My daughter—who had once refused to fall asleep without a bedtime story from her father—cried herself to sleep in my arms.

I looked down at the crease still caught between her little brows, and the pain in my chest felt crushing.

When, exactly, had our happy family of three turned into this?

Was it when Vanessa’s husband died, and Ethan decided she might do something reckless if she was left alone—so he started spending night after night at her place, comforting her?

He did it so often that when paparazzi caught him coming back to his own house, they thought he was sneaking around.

Was it when Ethan decided Hugo would be bullied without a father figure, so he never missed a single parent event at school?

He was always there for birthdays, always there for Children’s Day celebrations.

And because of that, my daughter was branded the other woman’s child and bullied at school.

Or was it the first time Mia collapsed from a cardiac episode?

I called Ethan over and over, but his line was busy every time.

When I finally got to the hospital, I was told nearly every available doctor had been pulled away to treat Hugo’s scraped arm.

Mia’s heart stopped three times.

I dropped to my knees and begged until my forehead was split open before I managed to stop one doctor long enough to save my daughter’s life.

I took a long, shaking breath and started packing.

Then I lifted my sleeping daughter into my arms and walked out of that house—our house, once—with no trace of regret.

A full week passed in our new place, and Ethan didn’t send a single message.

Vanessa, on the other hand, wouldn’t stop.

She kept forwarding entertainment coverage from French tabloids about their outings together, as if she was afraid I might somehow miss it.

I opened them expressionlessly.

Every place they’d gone was somewhere Mia and I had once wanted to visit.

Even the outlet covering them was the same one that had once run glowing coverage of Ethan and me as the couple of the century on our wedding day.

A new message came in from Vanessa:

“Sorry, Claire. I told Ethan he should pay the paparazzi to take the stories down, but he said you’ve got plenty of money.

“This all started because of me. If you want, I can sell the jewelry and designer bags Ethan bought me and use the money to have the coverage removed.”

She’d clearly made sure the photos included the gifts Ethan had given her.

Once, that would have been enough to send me storming to her place to smash and shred everything in sight.

Now, all I did was reply:

"Then I’d appreciate that."

The typing indicator on her end blinked for a long time.

Then nothing.

Just when I thought they might finally give it a rest, my phone buzzed with a deposit alert.

$1.5 million.

And the instant I saw the memo attached to it, every drop of blood in my body seemed to surge backward.

I spun around in shock and realized Mia had gotten out of the car at some point without me noticing. She was clutching the hem of my shirt, her face open and confused.Ethan went white.“Mia... what did you just say?“I’m your father. Are you still angry with me? Is that why you’re saying this?“Mia, I was wrong. Can you forgive me?”Mia took a step back.“Mister, my dad died a long time ago.“He even came to me in my dream during surgery and told me he’d protect me.“So how could you possibly be my dad?”“You heard her,” I snapped. “Leave. Stop trying to upset my daughter.”Ethan’s eyes reddened. His lips parted as if he wanted to say more, but in the end, he walked away like a man who had lost his soul—right before I called the police. But he still didn’t give up.I took time off work and drove Mia to and from school every day.I didn’t let her out of my sight for a second. One night, while I was blow-drying her hair, she suddenly said,“Mommy, why does Hugo’s dad keep showing up nea

“Considering she just came out of surgery, it’s best not to correct her for now,” the doctor had said.“Don’t do anything that might upset her.”I had laughed at that—quietly, bitterly.I never imagined that what I’d said to Ethan, that he no longer deserved to have Mia as a daughter, would come true in a way like this.I bent down and stroked Mia’s hair.“Sweetheart, how would you feel about moving somewhere new with Mommy after you leave the hospital?”I took out the visas I had prepared long ago and moved with my daughter to a small town in Northern Europe.Between what Ethan had paid me for all those hours he rented himself out to Vanessa and what I received in the divorce settlement, Mia and I had more than enough to live comfortably for the rest of our lives.I bought a small villa with a yard and a compact car.It wasn’t the same as the life we had back home, with a housekeeper, a nanny, and a cook. But there was a kind of ordinary happiness in making our own meals and tending t

All the color drained from Ethan’s face.“There’s... no more Mia?”He reached for the wall to steady himself, looking like he might collapse right there onto the floor.“How is that possible? The surgery was almost over...”His hands were shaking. What I had handed him slipped from his grasp and fell to the ground.A divorce certificate. And a bankbook. He stared at them blankly.“What is this, Claire? Is that... our last divorce certificate?”He reached for me.“This is my fault. Please, stop scaring me. Just take me to Mia...“I stopped loving Vanessa a long time ago. I only did those things because you never seemed to care about me—only about money. I wanted to provoke you. To get a reaction.”“Provoke me?”I bent down, picked up the bankbook, and hurled it straight at his face.“You used my daughter’s life to provoke me?“Ethan Caldwell, you’re not even human.“This bankbook belongs to Mia.”I forced my trembling fingers to flip it open and pointed at the transaction history inside

Inside the operating room, the equipment had been knocked every which way. A trail of blood stretched out across the floor and into the hallway. The doctors Ethan had dragged back with him all sucked in sharp breaths. He grabbed one of them by the collar and roared,“I told you to leave the lead surgeon behind!“Why the hell does it look like this? Where is my daughter?!”The doctor shook so badly he could barely get the words out.“I-it was Ms. Parker. She said the patient was having a severe allergic reaction and every doctor in the hospital had to go.“She also said she’d take full responsibility, and if anything delayed her son’s treatment, we’d all pay for it.”The veins at Ethan’s temple bulged.“So you left my daughter on the operating table to die?!”His eyes were bloodshot as he shouted,“Find them!”The memory of me in that video—on my knees, bowing to Vanessa, begging her—hit him all at once, and Ethan nearly lost his footing. He had really thought I was putting on a scene o

I looked past the doors.Mia’s chest was already open.On the cardiac monitor, her heartbeat was barely there—just the faintest tremor on the screen. The doctor hurriedly tried to shake me off.“Mr. Caldwell’s son had a sudden allergic reaction. The entire hospital has been reassigned to emergency response. We have to pause the surgery.”“You are not leaving!”My voice came out raw and torn from crying. My hands shook as I fumbled out a bank card.“How much did he pay you? I’ll pay double. Just finish my daughter’s surgery!”Afraid they’d think it wasn’t enough, I yanked out my phone too, ready to transfer the money on the spot. That was when I finally saw the memo on the deposit notification. It was from Ethan.Payment for renting the doctors.“Ma’am, this isn’t about money,” one of them said helplessly.“We’re afraid of losing our jobs.”No matter how I begged, no matter how hard I bowed and pleaded, the doctors still pried my fingers off them one by one and left.My daughter lay alo
