Chapter 3

Author: Amber Fleck
I drove to my mother’s gravesite so fast I was practically stumbling by the time I got there.

Ethan was already there, directing a crew to dig up the grave.

“Stop!”

I lunged forward and shoved the two workers away, then grabbed a shovel and stood in front of my mother’s headstone like a shield.

Ethan pulled Vanessa and Hugo behind him and let out a mocking laugh.

“Claire Bennett, I thought as long as the money was good enough, anything could be rented.

“I already transferred the fee for your mother’s plot. So what exactly are you making a scene about now?”

I was so furious my teeth were shaking.

“Ethan Caldwell, are you even human?”

He just shrugged, unconcerned.

“I’m following your rules, aren’t I? How does that make me the villain?

“Or is it that, in your mind, every kind of love is sacred—except ours? Ours is the only one cheap enough to put a price tag on?”

My nails dug so hard into my palms I should have felt pain. I felt nothing.

I couldn’t understand it.

How had the man who once knelt beside my mother’s hospital bed and swore he would never betray me become this person?

Vanessa stood there with a framed photo of a dog in her arms, tears glittering in her eyes as she spoke in that soft, aggrieved voice of hers.

“Forget it, Ethan. I know Duke was family to Hugo and me, but a pet is still a pet. It really wouldn’t be appropriate for it to take her mother’s burial plot.”

The moment Ethan saw her tears, his voice turned cold.

“Move, Claire.”

I gritted out every word. “In your dreams.”

He stepped closer and leaned down beside my ear.

“Mia’s surgery is next month. You should try being a little more cooperative until then.”

My whole body went cold.

“Isn’t Mia your daughter too?

“You’re threatening me with your own child?”

Ethan lifted a loose strand of hair and tucked it behind my ear with disturbing tenderness.

“Yes. But Hugo is my son too.

“The night before our wedding, Vanessa asked to see me. I drank too much, and... I made a mistake.

“You and Mia have the money. You have the legal title. So you should be the ones to act like adults.”

A sheen of cold sweat broke over me.

All I could see was Mia collapsing during her cardiac episode, over and over again in my mind.

Slowly, I lowered the shovel.

My legs felt filled with lead as I forced myself to step aside.

Hugo darted forward at once. “Yes! The old hag’s getting kicked out so Duke can move in!”

He yanked the black-and-white photo off my mother’s headstone, then grabbed the urn and raised it as if he was about to smash it.

“No!”

My mind went blank.

I threw myself at him.

To protect the urn, I took the full force of the impact and slammed my head against the stone.

The world spun. Everything in front of me turned red.

“Claire!”

Ethan rushed over and caught me, his hands shaking as he reached for the blood on my forehead.

“Does it hurt? Are you dizzy?”

I shoved him away and pulled a set of documents from my bag, pressing them hard against his chest.

“The fee you paid isn’t enough.

“Sign.”

The second he saw the words Property Transfer Agreement on the page, his expression turned glacial.

“Fine, Claire Bennett. Just fine!”

He pulled out a pen, signed his name in a few hard strokes, then threw both the pen and the papers to the ground before wrapping an arm around Vanessa and walking off with her and Hugo.

The pen snapped clean in two when it hit the ground.

I gave him that pen for our third dating anniversary.

The first thing he ever signed with it was our marriage certificate.

I bent down, picked up the documents, and found the divorce papers clipped behind the transfer agreement.

I stared at his sharp, familiar signature.

Then I laughed and cried at the same time as I clutched my mother’s urn and forced myself back to my feet.

Once Mia’s surgery was over, it would all be finished between us.

At last, the day of the operation came.

I watched as Mia was wheeled into the operating room.

Only then did I let out a breath and sink to my knees outside the doors, praying over and over.

"Please. Please let the surgery go well. Please let my daughter live."

But before the procedure was even over, another deposit notification flashed across my phone.

I hadn’t even had time to read the memo when the doors to the operating room flew open.

One of the doctors was rushing out, still wearing bloodstained gloves.

My hands and feet went numb.

I grabbed the last doctor by the sleeve of his white coat and held on with everything I had.

“My daughter’s surgery isn’t finished. Where are you going?”

I spun around in shock and realized Mia had gotten out of the car at some point without me noticing. She was clutching the hem of my shirt, her face open and confused.Ethan went white.“Mia... what did you just say?“I’m your father. Are you still angry with me? Is that why you’re saying this?“Mia, I was wrong. Can you forgive me?”Mia took a step back.“Mister, my dad died a long time ago.“He even came to me in my dream during surgery and told me he’d protect me.“So how could you possibly be my dad?”“You heard her,” I snapped. “Leave. Stop trying to upset my daughter.”Ethan’s eyes reddened. His lips parted as if he wanted to say more, but in the end, he walked away like a man who had lost his soul—right before I called the police. But he still didn’t give up.I took time off work and drove Mia to and from school every day.I didn’t let her out of my sight for a second. One night, while I was blow-drying her hair, she suddenly said,“Mommy, why does Hugo’s dad keep showing up nea

“Considering she just came out of surgery, it’s best not to correct her for now,” the doctor had said.“Don’t do anything that might upset her.”I had laughed at that—quietly, bitterly.I never imagined that what I’d said to Ethan, that he no longer deserved to have Mia as a daughter, would come true in a way like this.I bent down and stroked Mia’s hair.“Sweetheart, how would you feel about moving somewhere new with Mommy after you leave the hospital?”I took out the visas I had prepared long ago and moved with my daughter to a small town in Northern Europe.Between what Ethan had paid me for all those hours he rented himself out to Vanessa and what I received in the divorce settlement, Mia and I had more than enough to live comfortably for the rest of our lives.I bought a small villa with a yard and a compact car.It wasn’t the same as the life we had back home, with a housekeeper, a nanny, and a cook. But there was a kind of ordinary happiness in making our own meals and tending t

All the color drained from Ethan’s face.“There’s... no more Mia?”He reached for the wall to steady himself, looking like he might collapse right there onto the floor.“How is that possible? The surgery was almost over...”His hands were shaking. What I had handed him slipped from his grasp and fell to the ground.A divorce certificate. And a bankbook. He stared at them blankly.“What is this, Claire? Is that... our last divorce certificate?”He reached for me.“This is my fault. Please, stop scaring me. Just take me to Mia...“I stopped loving Vanessa a long time ago. I only did those things because you never seemed to care about me—only about money. I wanted to provoke you. To get a reaction.”“Provoke me?”I bent down, picked up the bankbook, and hurled it straight at his face.“You used my daughter’s life to provoke me?“Ethan Caldwell, you’re not even human.“This bankbook belongs to Mia.”I forced my trembling fingers to flip it open and pointed at the transaction history inside

Inside the operating room, the equipment had been knocked every which way. A trail of blood stretched out across the floor and into the hallway. The doctors Ethan had dragged back with him all sucked in sharp breaths. He grabbed one of them by the collar and roared,“I told you to leave the lead surgeon behind!“Why the hell does it look like this? Where is my daughter?!”The doctor shook so badly he could barely get the words out.“I-it was Ms. Parker. She said the patient was having a severe allergic reaction and every doctor in the hospital had to go.“She also said she’d take full responsibility, and if anything delayed her son’s treatment, we’d all pay for it.”The veins at Ethan’s temple bulged.“So you left my daughter on the operating table to die?!”His eyes were bloodshot as he shouted,“Find them!”The memory of me in that video—on my knees, bowing to Vanessa, begging her—hit him all at once, and Ethan nearly lost his footing. He had really thought I was putting on a scene o

I looked past the doors.Mia’s chest was already open.On the cardiac monitor, her heartbeat was barely there—just the faintest tremor on the screen. The doctor hurriedly tried to shake me off.“Mr. Caldwell’s son had a sudden allergic reaction. The entire hospital has been reassigned to emergency response. We have to pause the surgery.”“You are not leaving!”My voice came out raw and torn from crying. My hands shook as I fumbled out a bank card.“How much did he pay you? I’ll pay double. Just finish my daughter’s surgery!”Afraid they’d think it wasn’t enough, I yanked out my phone too, ready to transfer the money on the spot. That was when I finally saw the memo on the deposit notification. It was from Ethan.Payment for renting the doctors.“Ma’am, this isn’t about money,” one of them said helplessly.“We’re afraid of losing our jobs.”No matter how I begged, no matter how hard I bowed and pleaded, the doctors still pried my fingers off them one by one and left.My daughter lay alo
