Chapter 1

The moment our daughter said that, the guilt on Ethan Caldwell’s face vanished.

He shot to his feet and pointed at her, then turned to me with open outrage.

“Claire Bennett, is this what you’ve been teaching her?”

I calmly pulled my daughter behind me.

“What’s wrong with it? If she can’t have love, the least she can have is money.

“At least she learned that lesson early. I had to go through a divorce before I figured it out.”

That shut him up.

Then his phone rang again.

A little boy’s voice burst through the speaker.

“Uncle Ethan, hurry up! You promised you’d ride the Titan Coaster with me a hundred times!”

My daughter tightened her grip on my shirt.

Ethan noticed. For once, he didn’t say yes right away.

He reached out, wanting to pat her on the head.

“Mia, be good. Go to the hospital with Mommy today, okay?

“When you’re all better, Daddy will take you to the amusement park. Deal?”

Mia ducked away from his hand. Her wide eyes blinked innocently as she repeated,

“It’s okay, Daddy. Just send me the money.”

Ethan’s face darkened completely.

On his way out, he threw one last bitter line over his shoulder.

“Claire, go ahead and keep spoiling her.

“You're both completely unreasonable.”

The front door slammed so hard the walls seemed to shake, and my heart jolted with it.

Mia tugged on my arm and lifted her kids’ smartwatch so I could see the screen.

“Mommy, Daddy sent a lot of zeros.

“Is it enough for my surgery?”

At the sight of her face, I had to fight back the sob rising in my throat. I pulled her tightly into my arms.

“It’s enough. Once your surgery is done, Mommy’s taking you away from here.”

While we were waiting for her test results, a few notifications popped up on my phone.

Paparazzi photos.

Ethan, Vanessa Parker, and her son at an amusement park.

The headline read: Caldwell Heir Spotted on Family Outing with New Flame—Child Already Calling Him Dad!

I zoomed in on the photos and looked at Ethan’s face.

Relaxed. Easy. Happy.

I couldn’t even remember the last time he smiled like that in front of me and Mia.

My hand shook as I backed out of the post. When I refreshed the page, it had already been deleted.

A second later, Ethan called.

“Claire, don’t be upset. The media was just making things up.

“I already paid to have every article taken down.”

I froze for a moment before realizing he was talking about Vanessa’s son calling him Dad.

“I’m not upset,” I said flatly. “He’s just a kid. Kids say things.

“Besides, if I’ve already rented you out to them, then you should focus on keeping them company.”

Before he could answer, I hung up cleanly.

Not long after, Mia’s test report came back. The doctor said her condition was being managed well. If everything stayed stable, they could schedule her bypass surgery next month.

My whole body went weak. I nearly collapsed right there.

Back when Vanessa and her son came back into Ethan’s life after her divorce, he’d decided I needed to be taught a lesson.

He hired the best divorce attorney money could buy and forced me out with nothing.

The very next day, Mia was diagnosed with myocardial ischemia. At any moment, her condition could trigger sudden cardiac death.

Because of Ethan, no company dared hire me.

Not one friend. Not one relative. No one was willing to lend me money, either.

I watched my daughter’s health get worse and worse, and in the end, I bowed my head to Ethan after all.

But now, finally, Mia was out of immediate danger.

After locking in the surgery date, I went ahead and submitted visa applications for both of us through an agency.

Then a message from Ethan popped up:

"When are you coming home? I made your favorite dishes."

I didn’t reply.

An hour later, I pushed open the front door.

Ethan was sitting at the dining table, serving food onto Vanessa and her son’s plates.

I spun around in shock and realized Mia had gotten out of the car at some point without me noticing. She was clutching the hem of my shirt, her face open and confused.Ethan went white.“Mia... what did you just say?“I’m your father. Are you still angry with me? Is that why you’re saying this?“Mia, I was wrong. Can you forgive me?”Mia took a step back.“Mister, my dad died a long time ago.“He even came to me in my dream during surgery and told me he’d protect me.“So how could you possibly be my dad?”“You heard her,” I snapped. “Leave. Stop trying to upset my daughter.”Ethan’s eyes reddened. His lips parted as if he wanted to say more, but in the end, he walked away like a man who had lost his soul—right before I called the police. But he still didn’t give up.I took time off work and drove Mia to and from school every day.I didn’t let her out of my sight for a second. One night, while I was blow-drying her hair, she suddenly said,“Mommy, why does Hugo’s dad keep showing up nea

“Considering she just came out of surgery, it’s best not to correct her for now,” the doctor had said.“Don’t do anything that might upset her.”I had laughed at that—quietly, bitterly.I never imagined that what I’d said to Ethan, that he no longer deserved to have Mia as a daughter, would come true in a way like this.I bent down and stroked Mia’s hair.“Sweetheart, how would you feel about moving somewhere new with Mommy after you leave the hospital?”I took out the visas I had prepared long ago and moved with my daughter to a small town in Northern Europe.Between what Ethan had paid me for all those hours he rented himself out to Vanessa and what I received in the divorce settlement, Mia and I had more than enough to live comfortably for the rest of our lives.I bought a small villa with a yard and a compact car.It wasn’t the same as the life we had back home, with a housekeeper, a nanny, and a cook. But there was a kind of ordinary happiness in making our own meals and tending t

All the color drained from Ethan’s face.“There’s... no more Mia?”He reached for the wall to steady himself, looking like he might collapse right there onto the floor.“How is that possible? The surgery was almost over...”His hands were shaking. What I had handed him slipped from his grasp and fell to the ground.A divorce certificate. And a bankbook. He stared at them blankly.“What is this, Claire? Is that... our last divorce certificate?”He reached for me.“This is my fault. Please, stop scaring me. Just take me to Mia...“I stopped loving Vanessa a long time ago. I only did those things because you never seemed to care about me—only about money. I wanted to provoke you. To get a reaction.”“Provoke me?”I bent down, picked up the bankbook, and hurled it straight at his face.“You used my daughter’s life to provoke me?“Ethan Caldwell, you’re not even human.“This bankbook belongs to Mia.”I forced my trembling fingers to flip it open and pointed at the transaction history inside

Inside the operating room, the equipment had been knocked every which way. A trail of blood stretched out across the floor and into the hallway. The doctors Ethan had dragged back with him all sucked in sharp breaths. He grabbed one of them by the collar and roared,“I told you to leave the lead surgeon behind!“Why the hell does it look like this? Where is my daughter?!”The doctor shook so badly he could barely get the words out.“I-it was Ms. Parker. She said the patient was having a severe allergic reaction and every doctor in the hospital had to go.“She also said she’d take full responsibility, and if anything delayed her son’s treatment, we’d all pay for it.”The veins at Ethan’s temple bulged.“So you left my daughter on the operating table to die?!”His eyes were bloodshot as he shouted,“Find them!”The memory of me in that video—on my knees, bowing to Vanessa, begging her—hit him all at once, and Ethan nearly lost his footing. He had really thought I was putting on a scene o

I looked past the doors.Mia’s chest was already open.On the cardiac monitor, her heartbeat was barely there—just the faintest tremor on the screen. The doctor hurriedly tried to shake me off.“Mr. Caldwell’s son had a sudden allergic reaction. The entire hospital has been reassigned to emergency response. We have to pause the surgery.”“You are not leaving!”My voice came out raw and torn from crying. My hands shook as I fumbled out a bank card.“How much did he pay you? I’ll pay double. Just finish my daughter’s surgery!”Afraid they’d think it wasn’t enough, I yanked out my phone too, ready to transfer the money on the spot. That was when I finally saw the memo on the deposit notification. It was from Ethan.Payment for renting the doctors.“Ma’am, this isn’t about money,” one of them said helplessly.“We’re afraid of losing our jobs.”No matter how I begged, no matter how hard I bowed and pleaded, the doctors still pried my fingers off them one by one and left.My daughter lay alo
