Mia stayed in her room most of the day. She kept checking the hidden phone, reading Ethan’s replies, but she didn’t say anything about the pregnancy scare. Not yet.

Downstairs, things got worse.

Her mom was on the phone in the kitchen. Mia could hear her voice through the floor.

“Yes… hi, it’s Laura Thompson. Ethan’s mom? … Yes, we need to talk. Today if possible. … No, it can’t wait. Your son and my daughter… it’s bad. Really bad. Can you come over with Ethan? … Okay. See you in an hour.”

Mia stayed in her room most of the day. She kept checking the hidden phone, reading Ethan’s replies, but she didn’t say anything about the pregnancy scare. Not yet.Downstairs, things got worse. Her mom was on the phone in the kitchen. Mia could hear her voice through the floor.“Yes… hi, it’s Laura Thompson. Ethan’s mom? … Yes, we need to talk. Today if possible. … No, it can’t wait. Your son and my daughter… it’s bad. Really bad. Can you come over with Ethan? … Okay. See you in an hour.”Mia’s stomach dropped. She sat on the edge of her bed, hands shaking. An hour later, the doorbell rang. Her dad opened the door. Ethan’s mom walked in first, looking nervous. Ethan followed behind her, bruises still dark on his face. He looked at the floor.Jake was in the living room. The second he saw Ethan, he shot up from the couch.“You’ve got some fucking nerve showing up here,” Jake growled. He charged straight at Ethan, fist already pulled back.“Jake!” their dad yelled. He jumped between th

Ethan sat on the edge of his old bed, elbows on his knees. On the bedside table, the photo frame caught the light. Him and Jake at ten years old, both grinning with missing teeth, arms slung around each other’s shoulders after winning some dumb soccer trophy. Jake’s dad had taken the picture. They’d been inseparable back then.He picked it up, thumb rubbing over the glass. “Shit, man,” he muttered under his breath. “How the hell did we get here?”The bruise on his jaw throbbed when he talked. He set the frame back down, face first this time. Couldn’t look at it anymore.A soft knock came at the door.“Ethan? Honey, you in there?”He didn’t answer right away. His mom’s voice sounded tired. She’d been circling him ever since he showed up days ago with a split lip and a black eye, duffel bag slung over his shoulder like some runaway kid.The knob turned anyway. She poked her head in, hair pulled back in a messy bun, apron still on from the kitchen.“You’ve been holed up in here since bre

The front door slammed behind Jake. The sound hung there for a second. Then nothing.Mia’s mom let out a long sigh and rubbed her temples. “Jesus, Jake…”Her dad just sat there, staring at the door like it might open again. He looked wiped out.Mia stayed quiet, hidden phone heavy in her lap under the table. Her mom finally spoke, voice tired. “Mia… honey. That post. It’s ugly. People are already laughing at it.”“I saw,” Mia muttered. Her dad leaned forward. “We’re not screaming right now, okay? But you gotta see how this looks. You and Ethan sneaking around in our house. Lying to us. To Jake. And now the whole college is reading about it like it’s entertainment.”Mia didn’t look up. She just nodded once. Her mom sighed again. “We love you. You know that. But this… it’s getting out of hand. Jake’s hurting. Sarah’s hurting. And now strangers online are making jokes about our family.”Her dad rubbed his face hard. “Hand over the phone, Mia. The one Jake took. And any other one you’ve g

Mia’s heart nearly stopped when the kitchen light flicked on.She was halfway up the tree, one foot on a thick branch, fingers gripping the rough bark just below her window sill. Her mother’s silhouette moved past the kitchen window, heading straight for the back door. The soft click of the lock turning echoed in the quiet night like a gunshot.Oh God, no.Mia froze, barely breathing. If her mother stepped outside to check the yard — maybe for a late-night glass of water or because she heard something — it would all be over. She would see her daughter sneaking back in like a thief. For three terrifying seconds, Mia hung there, muscles burning, praying the shadows would hide her. Then the back door opened. Her mother stepped onto the porch, looking out into the dark backyard.“Mia?” her mother called softly, voice laced with worry. “Is that you out there?”Mia didn’t move. She pressed herself tighter against the tree trunk, heart hammering so loud she was sure her mother could hear it.

Ethan sat on the old wooden bench at the back of the neighborhood park, the one hidden behind overgrown trees and far from the streetlights. It was 10:45 PM. The night air was cool against his bruised skin, but the ache in his jaw and ribs barely registered. His eyes kept flicking toward the direction of Mia’s house, heart hammering with a mix of hope and dread. He had sent the risky text from a new number right after leaving her house earlier that day. No reply had come. He didn’t even know if she had seen it. But he couldn’t leave without trying. Not after everything that had exploded in front of her parents. The memory of her father’s disappointed face, her mother’s tears, and Jake’s fists still burned, but the look Mia had given him as he walked out the door kept him rooted here.He leaned forward, elbows on his knees, staring at the dark path that led toward the back fence of her yard. Every rustle of leaves made his pulse spike. What if she couldn’t

The dining room had gone deathly silent after Jake’s accusation. Everyone stared at him, then at Ethan, then at Mia. The air felt thick enough to choke on.“Jake, what the hell are you talking about?” their father demanded, voice low and dangerous. “Explain yourself. Right now.”Jake’s chest heaved, eyes blazing with betrayal as he pointed straight at Ethan. “He’s been sleeping with Mia. Behind my back. In our house. Sarah walked in on them. I walked in on them. That’s why I beat the shit out of him and told him never to come back here.”Mia felt the floor tilt beneath her feet. The secret was out — fully, brutally, in front of both her parents. Her mother’s hand flew to her mouth, a soft gasp escaping. Her father’s face drained of color, turning from confusion to shock to something darker. Before anyone else could speak, Ethan stepped forward. His voice was steady, even though his split lip had started bleeding again and his b
