Chapter 2

Penulis: Mountain River
The moment the door slammed shut, the walls seemed to close in on me. My claustrophobia roared to life.

A cold sweat broke across my skin. I tried to scream, but all that came out was a faint, broken gasp.

"No... No..."

I swung blindly, trying to shove away a darkness that had no edges.

I knocked over the easel and stumbled into the paint tins, sending jars clattering and rolling across the floor. The studio filled with the sharp, acrid stink of solvents until every breath scraped my throat.

At last, my strength gave out. I folded on the floor, making myself as small as I could, and the edges of the world bled away into a swirling black.

I didn't know how long I lay there before the door opened again.

Light speared the room and my eyes watered. I forced my head up and saw Vivian in the doorway. She must have come back for something. The second she saw me on the floor, her expression turned contemptuous.

"New trick, huh? Playing dead? I'm not buying it."

She snorted and stepped over me. When her gaze fell on the spilled paint, fury snapped through her face.

"Do you have any idea what these pigments cost? I had them flown in from the Neutral Territories! You ruined them on purpose!" she snarled.

I didn't even get a chance to defend myself. Her kick landed full in my abdomen.

A scream tore out of me. Pain ripped through my core, sharp and twisting, as if someone were wringing me out from the inside.

I could feel it then—the pup's fragile heartbeat growing weaker.

Vivian only huffed, as if she had nudged aside a piece of trash. She turned, shut the door, and the lock clicked again.

The pain went from sharp to a dull, throbbing numbness. I lay in a slick of paint and my own blood and finally stopped fighting.

"I'm sorry," I whispered to the tiny life inside me. "I'm so sorry I couldn't protect you."

Just when I was sinking into despair, footsteps returned. The door opened again, and my personal maid, Elsie Quinn, walked in carrying a cleaning caddy.

The moment she saw me, she let out a shriek, dropping to her knees.

"Luna Sutton, why are you here? Oh, my God! What happened?" Elsie reached for me, then froze at the sight of the blood pooling beneath me.

She covered her mouth and sobbed, "You're bleeding so much! Does it hurt? Who did this to you?"

I caught her wrist with what little strength I had left. "Save my pup. Call Alpha..."

Elsie saw the blood beneath me and understood at once. With shaking hands, she pulled out her phone and called Cassian.

Cassian's voice came through the line, cold and impatient. "What is the emergency? Vivian already told me Sutton spilled paint. That red on the floor is pigment. She's putting on a show! Leave her there to think about her actions!"

"But, Alpha Cassian, Luna Sutton is..."

"Did I stutter? One more word and you are fired!"

With that, he ended the call.

Elsie stared at her screen, torn and shaking. Then, a fierce resolve hardened her face. She didn't call Cassian again. Instead, she dialed the healer, Christopher Murray.

"Hello? Luna Sutton is bleeding out in the basement studio! We need you here right now!"

The moment the truth hit, Cassian's arrogance collapsed like a house of cards. He bent so low before my father that blood from his split lip spattered the floor. This was the most humble I had ever seen him."Alpha Charles, I was wrong!" he babbled, pathetic as a dog begging for scraps. "I didn't know Sutton was your daughter. I love her! I only wanted to take her home!""Enough!" Dad snapped, his voice a low growl of pure fury. "You dare say you love her? You let another she-wolf whip her! You ignored her cries and killed my grandson! Letting you and your pack go bankrupt is already mercy!"Realizing my father would never forgive him, Cassian crawled to me, clutching at the hem of my pants with bloodied fingers."Sutton, my Luna, look at me! I know I was wrong! I regret it! I haven't slept well these past three months! I tore the world apart trying to find you! I can't live without you! Please, forgive me! If you ask your dad to restore the contracts, I'll do anything!"There was

My words landed like a blade, straight through Cassian's paper-thin pride.Color flooded his face. Whatever control he had left snapped."Sutton, you liar!" he roared. "You're out of your mind! You're coming home with me, where you can get your head on straight!"He hauled me over his shoulder and turned for the door."Stand down!""Put Sutton down!"Gamma sentries and elders surged at once, a wall of muscle and teeth closing around Cassian. He only sneered, his eyes burning with possessive heat. "Move! She's my mate! I'm taking her home! No one gets in my way!""You really are hopeless," I said, calm even with the world upside down on his shoulder. "Open your eyes! This is the Dark Moon pack, not Blood Moon. My father is the Alpha here. Try laying a finger on me again and see what happens!""Your father is the Alpha of the Dark Moon pack?" Cassian actually laughed, the sound harsh and disbelieving. "Please! You're a Rogue with no family! Stop spinning tales! It's disgusting!"

Three months later, at the Dark Moon pack, I stood at the head of the council table in a sharp black suit, my hair pinned neatly back. I was presenting the latest financial report to the elders. For three months, I had done nothing but work. The she-wolf who once made herself small for love was gone."As for the acquisition in the eastern quarry, my view is..."Suddenly, the doors slammed inward so hard the hinges screamed.Gamma sentries scrambled to block the intruder, but he shook them off and stormed straight toward me.It was Cassian. He was leaner now, jaw shadowed with stubble. His eyes were shot through with red like a cornered wolf. The moment he saw me in the high seat, he rushed over and gripped my wrist so hard it felt like the bones might snap, completely ignoring the elders seated at the table."Sutton! I knew you were here!" His voice was fevered, almost unhinged. "Enough of this! How dare you fake your death just to get my attention? Well, you've got it now! We'r

The door eased open, and my father stepped in with a cup of bitter herbal tea. He took one look at me curled on my side, and the raw pity in his eyes almost undid me."Sutton, sit up and drink this," he said, setting the cup on the nightstand. He sat on the edge of the bed and smoothed a hand over my hair. "I know you're shattered, but your body comes first."I lifted my head. My eyes were red and swollen. "Dad, the pup is gone. I'm useless. I couldn't protect him."My father pulled me into his arms. His voice trembled with sorrow, but his resolve was firm. "It wasn't your fault. This is on Cassian! He killed my grandson! I'll see the Blood Moon pack pay for it!"His promise and the warmth of his embrace were the only things holding me together. I buried my face in his shoulder and cried until the worst of it ebbed away.Three years ago, in this same room, I had defied my father for the first time."Dad, I love him. I'll give up everything for him!" I had said."Foolish! If you

"Luna Sutton's gone, and so is her pup..."The words hit Cassian like a physical blow. He froze, staring at my body under the white sheet, his mind going utterly blank. He couldn't reconcile with it. He refused to believe I was dead, especially after he'd just accused me of faking a pregnancy that morning. "What the hell are you talking about?" Cassian lunged, grabbing Christopher by the collar, his eyes bloodshot with a primal fury. "She's faking it! I'm ordering you to bring her back! I don't care what it costs or what you have to use! Do it!"Christopher, rattled by the shaking, steadied himself and spoke quietly. "Alpha Cassian, please... You need to calm down... Luna Sutton has no vital signs. She was two months along. She bled out. We missed the window...""Two months..." Cassian's whole body started to shake. He let go of Christopher and stumbled backward until the wall caught him.In his head, my hoarse voice roared back from the memory, "Cassian, help me! I'm pregnant!"

Christopher arrived fast. He took one look at me and knew my condition was dire."Lay her flat! Hurry!" he ordered.Elsie, shaking so hard she could barely think, obeyed without question. Together, they eased me onto the cleanest patch of floor they could find.Christopher snapped open his kit, but then he went pale. The supplies he carried for routine house calls were nowhere near enough for a hemorrhage this severe."I'm short on the right meds," he said, his voice tight with alarm. "We need a coagulant from the central infirmary immediately. But they won't release it without 100 dollars upfront."Elsie emptied her pockets. The crumpled bills didn't even add up to five dollars. "Please," she begged, tears catching her words. "Can't you put it on account? Alpha Cassian will approve it when he gets here!"Christopher hesitated. The infirmary never ran tabs. It was always cash and carry. But he looked at the blood spreading under me and the way my eyes kept drifting shut, and his
